The Goose At The OVT, Selly Oak

As noted the clientele is a glorious hotchpotch of locals and students who mix like oil and water. However the reason it is so popular is because it is dirtily cheap, both for beer and food. Ale prices start at 1.20 and lagers like Stella and 1664 all cost less than 2-a-pint. Burger & chips and a pint (of cheapest beer/lager) will set you back a whopping 3.50... and main meals come in 3 sizes!
On the plus side it is the least pretentious pub ever; there is no dress code, strictly casual and/ or paint/oil/grime stained work overalls. Indeed I have been in for lunch, and observed locals sleeping peacefully in their seats, and then returned later that night to find that, at closing, the same people sitting in the same places... often still asleep.
Staff are friendly.
Recommended if you are a student and/ or on minimum wage.

The Cricketers, Woodford

Has a public & lounge bar, cheap real ale, not cheap lager and a pleasant pint of Guinness. Also, decent food served daily, 12-2pm except Sundays, charity quiz nights and even a conker competition.

It is a locals local, but they're mostly harmless old farts. I have noticed that despite they're advanced years they still have a healthy appetite for an evening of enebriation & avoiding the wife.

Has awards from Camra displayed prominently and is, in all, a very cosy old-fashioned boozer.

Probably the pick of Woodford's hostelries.

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

I quote a good friend's comment to the barmaid on my last visit.

"You'll need some more shootings in here to sort this place out!"

I think that covers it.

Turners Old Star, Wapping

I agree with Dan, proper local. Not much to look at but definitley a world away from the city.

Once went for a quick drink and was "locked-in" without realising, it can't get much better.

The Captain Kidd, Wapping

Best pub in the world, ever.
Sam smiths chain means its cheap and friendly. On the river with beer garden means summer nights are excellent. Have had two birthday "all-dayers" in here and the staff showed the patience of saints.

The Dickens Inn, Tower Hill

Very touristy.
The pizza place above is the only reason to go. Cheapish pizzas that go from large to bigger than dustbin-lid size. Largest one available has its own table to hold it.

The Minories, Tower Hill

A dungeon with beer taps.

All Bar One, City Of London

Only been once, my future boss passed out in the toilets...and i pissed on him. Excellent night, although i take the credit for that.

Abacus, Bank

If you like vapid, shallow women who undress at the drop of a wallet...and the males who chase them...
Average city bar trying to out-punch its weight.

The Red Lion, Moorgate

Warning: Coppers have leaving do's in this pub.

The Sir Paul Pindar, Bishopsgate

It has table football and toilets.
Nothing else of note sadly.

Woodins Shades, Liverpool Street

Friendly bar staff that don't preen in front of customers! Certainly unique in the city for that.
Downmarket and dishevelled is fair, I think.
Pool tables are more like mini golf courses with long sticks replacing the cues.
Low on excitement, big on normality.

Sosho, Moorgate

Cocktails are something special. Barstaff are not!
Have had some truly special nights in here. The long island iced tea is very fast acting. Only bar I've ever seen a woman puke down her front and 5 guys surrounding her STILL trying to pull her. Top marks.
Have done this place on a school night many times and wouldn't recommend it, you'll end up sleeping in the bogs at work for hours.

Digress, Moorgate

10/10 for comedy value. The clientele is something only found in anthropological text books.
Herad this place described as "a nightclub for those with low taste and get up early".
Dress with "elizabeth duke bling" and home highlighted hair.
Is cheap in happy hour.
Upmarket alternative is Sosho up the road.

The Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street

It is comparitively cheap.
Full of tramps and gyppos.
No chance of a quick pint.
Did used to get lunch here when i worked in the broadgate exchange tho. I think that speaks volumes about the quality of food in the exchange.

Dirty Dick's, Bishopsgate

Everyone who drinks here wants either a quick divorce or an orange peel nose (potentially both).
Definitely a drinkers pub! These people understand what an aspiring alcoholic needs from them, a quick pint or 7 before staggering back to the trains.
This is not a place to pull, or even think about pulling.
