Old Rooms Inn, Weymouth

Called in with the family on a recent stay in Weymouth, actualy our second go at this pub and although the service was a bit slow and the barstaff a bit disinterested the food was quite good I thought. The ale wasn't bad but a tad on the pricey side and although they pretend that it isn't this is realy a restaurant in a pub setting. There are worse places in Weymouth though believe me.

The Star Inn, Bath

Called in here on a recent crawl of Bath and kicked myself that I even bothered with the other pubs. The Bass was like wine, it was almost a religious experience just being there. I could have stayed all day but the barman was keen to lock up after the lunchtime session. To his credit though he did alow us one more pint and was patient whilst we supped it and savoured every drop. Surely the mecca of pubs.

30 Apr 2009 11:59

Sam Wellers, Bath

Called in during a recent crawl in Bath. Totaly bland pub and the beer was all together average. Wont be going back.

30 Apr 2009 11:54

Skippers, Sherborne

Im surprised this pub does as well as it does given the location but its looking decidedly tatty now and the beer is questionable.

26 Apr 2009 19:18

The Plume of Feathers, Sherborne

Checked in again and since my last visit I have to say the place has gone down hill. The barmaid tapped us up for a charity draw as soon as we got in there, not nice. Unless you are under 30 and love fights, I would avoid this dump.

26 Apr 2009 19:15

The White Hart, Sherborne

Will give this pub 3rd place (Behind the Digby Tap and the The Crown) on my recent 10 venue tour of Sherborne. It was quiet (Monday lunchtime) but for all that, pleasant. I had Tanglefoot, I think, and it was well presented.

26 Apr 2009 19:10

The Crown Hotel, Sherborne

As a change from my usual sunday lunchtime visits I decided to come in on a Monday night. The beer was like wine and the food was some of the best pub food I have tasted anywhere. Service was in the traditional style and very welcome. I urge you to give it a go, you wont be disappointed.

26 Apr 2009 19:06

The Half Moon Inn, Sherborne

Just one word sums this place up....... AVERAGE. Go to the Digby Tap instead.

26 Apr 2009 18:54

The Digby Tap, Sherborne

Always top of the list on my tour of Sherborne pubs, in fact it waranted 2 visits on the same crawl of ten venues. Always good food on offer (at lunch time) and a varied choice of ales, well presented. All in all there is no need to go anywhere else as nothing else comes up to the mark in Sherborne though it saddens me to say it.

26 Apr 2009 18:52

The Cross Keys, Sherborne

Could not resist going in.......... and regretted it instantly. What a toilet. The whole pub is a complete disgrace. The location should mean that this is Sherborne's premier pub but instead is little more than a health hazard. Avoid, avoid, avoid at all costs avoid.

26 Apr 2009 18:47

The Commercial Rooms, Bristol

Called in here recently direct from Bristol Airport after a long period of self imposed exile. Not much had changed I have to say. Still bursting at the seams with an interesting collection of drinkers from couples to gangs of roughs. The ale we had was sublime but the service was terrible. To a man (and woman) they all looked bored and disinterested and gave the impression that they were doing you a favour just by consenting to serve you. But the ale more than made up for it...... if only I can remember what it was called.

26 Apr 2009 18:43

The Britannia Inn, Sherborne

Called in here during a day long ten pub tour of Sherborne. Tried the Ringwood and it wasn't bad. The place was empty though, just my drinking mate, myself and a very bored barmaid. Me thinks it wont be long before it closes again, this time for good.

26 Apr 2009 18:30

The Swan With Two Necks, Bristol

The original landlord has let the place and gone to India to live and although the place seems much the same the Bass last time was far too fresh. Prices are creeping up but not as sky high as mainline pubs in Bristol. I still like it but avoid Friday nights when the resident DJ cranky up his wheels of steel and plays decidedly dodgy music.

20 Feb 2009 18:39

The Crown Hotel, Sherborne

Popped in here with family for a sunday lunch between Christmas and new year. And, I have to say although the menu was severly limited and dominated by fish dishes the welcome was warm and the beer though not outstanding was very acceptable. What was't acceptable was the schoolgirl waitress who although very pretty and friendly was as dim as a TocH lamp. The place was rammed out, and I thought the speed with which the food came was very commendable considering the vast numbers in there for lunch.
Overall, I think they do a good job in here which is just as well as without it there is no serious alternative in Sherborne.
Give it a go.

20 Feb 2009 18:33

The Swan Inn, Sherborne

Oh dear, why did I bother. Stuck my head in last time I was in Sherborne and the place is an open toilet. It should be closed down.

20 Feb 2009 18:22

The White Post, Rimpton

Fantastic news that the doors are open again and all seems well from the comments here.
I too got wrong footed by the winter opening hours and we had to return to Sherborne and our usual haunt the Crown.
Good to read the landlord is making a big effort and trying to please everyone. Not an easy task as often you end up pleasing no one when on that tack. However, im going to make a point of heading in there next time I am in the UK and the Sherborne area.

20 Feb 2009 18:17

The Swan Inn, Sherborne

Gave this place a second chance recently as I felt my first comments may have been a little on the strong side.
It was dire, the beer was even crap this time and the place smelt like one big ash tray and was filthy dirty. One to avoid.

21 Apr 2007 14:31

The Top House, The Lizard

One of the strangest boozers I have ever set foot in regards atmospehere. Very much an 'Us' ie locals and them 'Tourists' venue. As you would expect its geared up to squeeze every penny out of the tourists. Not that its a bad pub mind you. Quite nicely done so that although there is plenty of room for the diners there is also a bit of the pub that has a local feel.
Food is expensive and the drinks arent cheap but a good standard of both even if the service is a bit slow (And it wasnt high season) and the serving staff consisted of bored local teenagers who were only there for wages. Not bad overall.

21 Apr 2007 14:24

The Plume of Feathers, Sherborne

Having not set foot in here for years I decided to brave it with a mate of mine. I had heard the rumours about youngsters and fights but I found none of it.

The pub hasnt changed much over time and the beer was pretty good. There were quite a few young lads in but they were all friendly and polite.

The only minus point was the stink from the curry house next door that kept wafting in via the beer garden.

19 Apr 2007 09:03

Kings Arms, Marazion

Looking for a Cornish Pasty Shop I decided to nip in for a swift one as the place looked inviting. The manager was out the back getting the owners lunch so I had a chat with him. Great bloke, really friendly but I wasnt realy listening as I was in raptures with my pint of St Austel ESP. I kid you not, it tasted like cream. Easily the best pint I have ever had in Cornwall. If you are visiting the nearby St Michaels Mount, slake your thirst here. You wont regret it.

19 Apr 2007 08:54

The Boot, Weymouth

Spending a few days in Weymouth I made it my business to seek this pub out. The experience was one of mixed emotions. The pub its self is an absolute gem and I agree with other Bite members that its in the top 3 in Weymouth. The beer was top notch but then you would expect that from a Brewery flagship pub.
On the downside though the place was staffed by two disinterested girlies who were only interested in chatting to each other and allied to the fact that the pub seems to be a regular port of call for piss heads it rather took the shine off the place.

19 Apr 2007 08:48

The Red Lion, Swanage

Having enjoyed indifferent pints of Ringwood at various pubs in Swanage recently I was both pleased and anoyed to find the best beer and the best pub at the end of my tour. If I had started there then I would not have bothered with the others. The Ringwood was sublime and the cheapest in town. Great pub, great atmos. Dont bother going anywhere else in Swanage, you will find it all here.

31 Jan 2007 09:32

The Cornubia, Bristol

Hats off to the Hidden Brewery, firstly for saving this Bristol gem and secondly for making such a bloody good fist of it. I checked it out last week and it was knob on! Beers were first class and the service was very friendly. The place was buzzing too with a good mix of folks from all walks of life and ages. TOP TOP TOP.

31 Jan 2007 09:26

The Nova Scotia, Bristol

One of Bristols most characterfull pubs, located at the west end of the docks next to the small swing bridge. The ales and ciders on offer are in tip top condition and although I didnt eat all the grub I saw come out of the kitchen looked good quality. Bar staff were bright and friendly. Traditional pub interior not yet ruined. Long may this Bristol Diamond of a watering hole stay this way. Note for Bass drinkers: 7/10

8 Nov 2006 20:59

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol

I know people to rave about this pub and although the beers on offer are sound and the pizzas pretty damn good; to me its nothing more than a glorified local, certainly not worth the trek out of Bristol. If you are in the area or passing through why not go in and prove me wrong.

3 Oct 2006 22:30

The Swan Inn, Sherborne

Hadn't been in here for years and was pleasantly surprised to start with. Nice and airy, good ale, cheerfull barmaid and quite a bit of character to the place. However, as the evening wore on the talking picture in the corner got louder the music got crapper and the place started to fill up with rough looking kids who looked as if they were all spoiling for a fight. I think this would be a cracking lunchtime venue but aim to give it a big swerve in the evenings from now on.

10 Sep 2006 10:49

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

Recently dropped by of a weekday lunchtime and was un-nerved by the two schoolgirls behind the bar who seemed more interested in 'Girlie chat' than pulling pints and serving up pasties. Having said that the pubs atmos is still a legend, just get some interested staff in.

1 Sep 2006 00:05

The Ring O Bells, Nailsea

Update... Called in recently prior to watching Nailsea 1st team hammer Shirehampton at Cricket. Although the pub is looking the tired could not fault the food or ale.

31 Aug 2006 23:40

Knights Templar, Bristol

Passing through Temple Meads early one morning and starving hungry I decided to check out the breakfast here. It was hot, well cooked and came with a coffee for under a fiver! Not bad egh? I noticed some brave souls on the next table drinking cider before 10am!

31 Aug 2006 23:18

The Miners Rest, Long Ashton

Having not been here for years I had the chance to drop by last night and was sad to see the Bass has now gone. They serve ale the correct way here, direct from the barrel. However, they have replaced the Bass with one of the best pints of London Pride I have ever tasted! and I'v tasted a few in my time... it was sublime. The pub has'nt changed and thats a good thing, still unspoiled with a very nice 'local' feel. Great bar service and amusing locals. Highly recommended if you fancy a short trip out of Bristol.

29 Aug 2006 22:37

Tommyknocker Brewery and Pub, Idaho Springs

Update... Still good. Excellent range of beers and good food. On the dowside they have taken out the pool tables to make way for an expansion of the brewery.

18 Jun 2006 14:54

Wetherspoons T4L, Heathrow Airport

Update.. Having just suffered the horrible fodder BA call food from Dallas and en route to Zurich I was praying that Weatherspoons T4 would have something to offer a hungry traveller.... they did. I enjoyed a superb full English Farmhouse Breakfast. Although certainly not cheap it was plentifull and well cooked. Standard of service was still very high. Recommended.

18 Jun 2006 14:47

The Silver Dollar Saloon, Leadville

This legendary watering hole is located at over 10,000ft above sea level. Situated in an old mining town the bar is steeped in history. originally it was called the Board of Trade. It was a house of gambling and drinking; it is said that Oscar Wilde, after lecturing at the Tabor Opera House, crossed the street and "put down shots with the best of them." Its huge back bar, front bar, windbreak, swinging doors and diamond dust mirrors came from St. Louis by covered wagon.

I didnt eat here andonly had a couple of bottled beers but I swear you could get drunk just on the atmosphere alone. If you are in Vail for skiing, hire a car and check this place out, you wont be sorry.

21 May 2006 23:42

The Sultana Bar, Williams

I would recommend this bar to anyone. Williams is a delight anyway being on the famous route 66 but to find this place was fantastic. We only went in for a swift one at lunch time and stayed till 2am the next morning. A real American bar, steeped in history and friendly locals. A lot of Brits have passed through here. Check out all the money behing the bar with messages on and see if you can spot my 10 Swiss franc note.

21 May 2006 22:55

The Walnut Brewery, Boulder

Pretty town this with lots watering holes. This brew pub is one of the biggest in town, a huge barn of a place and renown for its scoff as well as its beer. Both were very acceptable but what was not was the sour end to the evening when the surly university boy/waiter challenged the size of his tip. Luckily for him he was beyond reach. Check it out if you are in Boulder but watch out for the winey student waiters.

21 May 2006 22:46

The Bull and Bush Brewery, Denver

Stepping into this place is like stepping into a pub in the UK. There is a big clue here, there are thousands of British Ex-Pats in Denver and most of them drink here. The place was bursting at the seems with every UK accent you could imagine. The beer was well brewed and the food was excellent too. Well worth sniffing out.

21 May 2006 22:42

The Orchard Inn, Bristol

Dont know why it took me so long to get round to this one as I have spent many a pleasant hour here in the past. Tucked in a back street Nr the SS Great Britain is this tiny Free House run by Bob 'Scooter Boy' Merchant and his Wife Ali. There are a lot of savoury characters in here and the quiz night used to be very well attended. The Thatchers Cider here is good and very popular and several Ales on offer too. Food is good and good value. Well worth sniffing out especial for a lunchtime session.

16 May 2006 23:38

The Tikki Bar, Dubai

Just a short stroll through the lobby from Harry's Bar is the Tikki Bar. Cosy and intimate place with subdued lighting and a good range of bottled beers including the very tasty Amstel. Friendly bar staff and a neverending supply of Cashew nuts. Great bar for networking as it seems the place is a popular stopover hotel.

16 May 2006 23:15

Harry's Place, Dubai

American style theme bar. Good range of beers and cocktails and always music on (Not realy a bonus if you are trying to get some kip 2 floors up). Popular place with non residents and residents alike, especialy at weekends.

16 May 2006 23:10

The Dhow and Anchor, Dubai

This is a well known watering hole for British EXPATS and tourists in Dubai. Its got a real pub feel to it despite being situated within a hotel (As all bars are here). The Guinness was as good as the pint I had at the Dublin Brewery bar and the grub was superb (Fish and Chips are highly recomended) and the bar service was swift and attentive. If you are in a mind you can step out onto the terrace and and boil yourself whilst watching the super rich arriving by helicopter at the Burj Al Arab next door.

16 May 2006 23:01

The Pilot Boat Inn, Lyme Regis

Shot in here one lunchtime last summer with the olds and the kids. Nice bit of grub and the beer was good (Palmers are a bit underated I recon). However, being where it is I suppose they have to capitalise on the 'Day tripper' trade so yes, it does have more of a restaurant feel than a boozer. Would'nt like to spend the evening here but for lunchtime its pretty good.

12 May 2006 13:00

The White Post, Rimpton

Anyone know whats happened here? Flashed past in the car a while back and saw the roof was off.

10 May 2006 14:05

The Britannia Inn, Sherborne

Update.... called in here recently in the hope the place had changed for the better.... it had'nt. Landlord was miserable and the girl behind the bar did'nt know the difference between bitter and Guiness. Stay away and try the Digby Tap accross the road.

9 Apr 2006 21:41

The Digby Tap, Sherborne

... Update. I was in here on a recent Saturday night and it was nearly impossible to get served and almost unbearably loud. The place was rammed full of youngsters in the pool bar and you had to nearly batter your way through to get to the Gents. We gave up in the end which was a pity as the beer was knob on. What I am saying is if you want a quiet pint on a Saturday night give this place a miss.

1 Apr 2006 19:29

Cambridge Arms, Redland

This used to be a cosy local untill Fullers blagged it. Its now gone a bit trendy with the place crawling with 'Posh' Bristol Uni students. Grub is'nt too bad and the beer is consistently good, but I cant think of any good reason to come up here unless you happen to be in the locality.

16 Mar 2006 10:28

The Glass House, Nailsea

One to avoid unless you are under 20 and a pugelist.

1 Mar 2006 17:02

The Blue Flame Inn, Nailsea

Big Pete is right. This place is unique and it was no more than an out of control cycle ride from my house in Nailsea. Its a real step back in time. They have a great cricket following here and a huge beer garden out back. Electicity? forget it, its candles and firelight at night. Superb range of tasty ales and always a traditional cider, thats real cider not that fizzy keg muck... dont try cycling after 8 pints of it though, I still have the scars!

1 Mar 2006 17:00

The Kings Head, Bristol

Luckily there is a handfull of pubs close to the centre of Bristol that have not been raped and ruined by the chains and pub companies. This is one of them. A real drinkers boozer oozing with character and one of the best traditional pub interiors in Bristol. The ales are well presented and the landlord keeps his lines clean. One slight grey mark is the price of the beer. The Cornubia is just around the back so a couple of good pubs to check out within a stagger of each other.

1 Mar 2006 16:44

The Crown Hotel, Sherborne

This is the first pub you come to in Sherborne as you ease off the accelerator after escaping from Yeovil. Thirsty or Hungry? Dont pass this by. The Ales are varied and well kept and the grub is fresh, well prepared and reasonably priced. The pub itself is cosy and well maintained. What realy counts here is the friendliness of the landlord, his wife and their staff and the tip top service. Nothing was too much trouble and when we were there the landlord was entertaining some kids with magic tricks. My Mrs wanted to change our nipper and the landlady opened up the function room where it would be 'more comfortable'. How many boozers would do that? Certainly no others in Sherborne thats for sure.

21 Feb 2006 13:14

The Half Moon Inn, Sherborne

Half pub half restaurant and not very good at either. Decor is drab and I have experienced better atmosphere in a graveyard. Its a pity because this place is pitched in a prime site and a lot could be made of it. I dont blame the management I blame the short sighted bean counters at HQ. Quite frankly there are better pubs nearby (Digby Tap) so give this one a wide berth unless 'Tacky' is your thing.

20 Feb 2006 15:17

The Star Inn, Bath

Bath is great for pub crawls and this place always features in ours. As already noted the interior is a national treasure and the welcome and the standard of the ale befits such a jewel of a pub. Worth checking in on sunday lunchtime but get there at opening time for any chance of a seat. If you havent been to the Star you havent really seen Bath's finest.

13 Feb 2006 21:59

Tommy's Garage, Galtur

If you are in this quiet Ski resort - Galtr - Just up the road from the larger and busier Ischgl, you can do worse than this little gem of a watering hole. Located up a side street and underground the bar is based on an americana theme. Its not big but there is plenty of seating both at and away from the bar. All in all very nicely done and with bogs you could eat your dinner in. Standard range of continental fizzy beer. Pizzas on demand and the best music I have heard anywhere. Check it out.

13 Feb 2006 21:54

The William Dampier, Yeovil

A bit hit and miss. Fine one visit and Cak the next. Sunday lunch can be top or pig swill. No consistency which I thought spoons was supposed to be about. As usual unless pissed youths are your thing avoid on a friday or sat night.

11 Jan 2006 11:09

Wetherspoons T4L, Heathrow Airport

Always busy as a one armed taxi driver with crabs but I was here in January and was amazed by the quality of the beer, the standard of the food and the speed and eficiency of the service.. Top notch! There is a clue here.... the staff seem to be all eastern europeans who dont seem to be afraid of work!

11 Jan 2006 10:59

The Berkeley, Clifton

Grim barn of a place. Difficult to get served and when you do the beer is likely to be a disapointment. Surly staff, filthy tables and full of students. Spoons worst pub in Bristol by far. Avoid like the plague.

11 Jan 2006 10:51

The Cross Keys, Sherborne

Alright for a morning coffee or lunchtime drink with a bite to eat but unless rowdy youths hell bent on alcoholic oblivion is your thing steer clear of night times, especialy at the weekends and even then get out well before closing.

11 Jan 2006 10:34

The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers

I know people who travel from London just to spend a lunchtime here without visiting any other pub in the area. Once visited never forgotten and you will be back time and time again.

18 Dec 2005 00:27

The Volunteer Inn, Ventnor

Tidy little pub this, clean and friendly with some very tasty ales indeed. Happens to be in the best town on the island too. Parking is at a premium but if you are drinking you aint driving are you?

18 Dec 2005 00:24

The Swan With Two Necks, Bristol

If like me you loath and despise those ghastly city centre pubs than this pub will be like a breath of fresh air. Tucked away in the side streets at the bottom of the M32 The Swan with Two Necks epitomises the spirit of the great British pub.
The pub is a drinking mans dream of a watering hole. Nice traditional decor with wood floors, comfortable seating, cosy atmosphere, friendly welcome and without doubt the best Bass in Bristol served straight from the barrel just as it should be. A visit to Bristol without sampling the delights of the Swan With Two Necks would be a very shallow experience.

10 Dec 2005 07:24

The Boringdon Arms, Turnchapel

A gem of a pub. Not only do they have a superb range of local and guest ales the food menu offers something for everyone and all home cooked with very reasonable prices. Full of local character and entertainment at the weekends. They hold the occasional beer festival here. Good accommodation too and a superb breakfast in the morning. The landlord and his wife are a lovely and welcoming couple. You just cant go wrong. A good trick if you are in Plymouth is to take the Mountbatten ferry from the barbican and then walk the mile to the pub. You wont be sorry you made the effort.

26 Nov 2005 19:34

Tommyknocker Brewery and Pub, Idaho Springs

I am finding it hard to find words to describe this fantastic Brew/Pub. All the beers are brewed right there in the bar and there are some real surprises, last time I pitched up they had chili beer on offer. There are a couple of pool tables in the bar and a good restaurant which is part of the bub right next door serving good local menus at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

26 Nov 2005 19:04

Uwe's Bierbar, Feldkirch

Tucked away in the backstreets of this delightfull Austrian town is Uwe's. Small and cosy with outside tables in summer. Good range of local and national brews, superb juke box and a warm and friendly welcome.

26 Nov 2005 18:46

Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster

Probably the best thing that ever happened to Bedminster was Weatherspoons decision to turn a shop into the RF. Those that know Bedminster will appreciate what a big gamble this was for JDW. Its the classiest pub in the area and the beer is always good. Plenty of seating, clean and friendly. Bit of a working mans pub and can get loud on a friday from lunchtime. Food is the usual JDW fodder but good, simple and honest.

22 Nov 2005 15:26

The Ring O Bells, Nailsea

Ditto Big Pete's words but add that they have a nice beer garden with toys for kids and not far up the road is the superb Blue Flame.

22 Nov 2005 15:21

The Princes Motto, Barrow Gurney

If you have just spent time overseas drinking the fizzy pop that passes for beer and you fly into Bristol Airport this pub should be your first port of call. A very cosy local boozer with atmosphere and some well kept English Ales. Quite small inside but a nice little beer garden and a car park round the side. Altogether a very suitable place to salve your dried out tongue.

22 Nov 2005 15:19

The Old Fish Market, Bristol

I will say this for Fullers pubs they seem to care about their ale and I have never had a bad pint here. Somehow the atmoss is better at lunch time and I would never go there in the evening as its just not the same pub. Food is portion controled standard fare but good enough to fill a gap and not hurt your pocket. Overall a good effort but that long walk to the can can take a nerve of steel and strong bladder control. Fast efficient and friendly staff.

22 Nov 2005 15:09

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol

This is a famous pub in Bristol with a history going back hundreds of years. It is situated in one of the few ancient areas of the docks which did not fall victim to bombing in WW2. I can remember when this was a 'Real' real ale house. Stone flag floors, Bass served straight from the barrel! Now it resembles someones front room... re-developed and ruined. May be you like pubs like this but... If it was still as it was I would give it 10/10 as it is it barely hits the scale.

22 Nov 2005 15:02

Bonnie Prince Pub, Zurich

Nice little pub this. Cosy and intimate, great for eary evening or lunch time. Gets smoked out by nine though so if dont like fags avoid it.

22 Nov 2005 11:22

Oliver Twist, Zurich

I hit this place on a Friday night and it was jumping. A good atmosphere and a good range of beer and stout. If you only hit one pub in Zurich it has to be this one.

22 Nov 2005 11:20

Fossilbar, Grabs

A superb pub located in Northeast Switzerland on the border with Austria and Liechtenstein. The main features of the pub are:- A good range of beers and wall to wall rock music... oh and did I mention the lifesize skeleton of the T-REX.

17 Nov 2005 22:32

Knights Templar, Bristol

One of Weatherspoons fleet. Very modern and purpose built smack bang in the middle of a raft of office blocks. Full of suits and skirts at lunchtime (Especialy Fridays). Dont know the cellar arrangements here but somehow I dont think the beer is as good as at the other Bristol Weatherspoon joints. Food is the usual Weatherspoon fodder. No great shakes but cheap.

17 Nov 2005 22:21

The Cornubia, Bristol

Tucked round the back of the central firestation this boozer used to be the 'Brewery Tap' for the now defunct Georges/Courage Brewery. Some of the ales can be a bit obscure and one night I tried em all and did'nt find one to my palate. Great atmos though and well worth sniffing out.

17 Nov 2005 22:16

The Bridge Inn, Bristol

If you like drinking with someone elses elbow in your face then this is the pub for you... its tiny! The Bath Ales are kept very well though and the atmosphere is good. Well worth seeking out but the landlords choice of music may not be to everyones tatse.

17 Nov 2005 22:12

The Commercial Rooms, Bristol

Big barn of a place, was a businessmans club but very run down untill Weatherspoons got hold of it. It has its drawbacks, being central it gets racked out with kids thur fri sat evenings getting tanked up before going on to clubs and there are a good smattering of unsavoury characters. All down to Weatherspoons more than reasonable prices. Food is cheap and cheerful but it can take a lifetime to get served at busy times. One more point, the bar staff can be ultra keen to enforce the limits on drinking up and chucking out.

17 Nov 2005 22:07

The Mermaid Hotel, Yeovil

I was regular here in the late 70s and had more than one stint behind the bar too. It was packed thurs fri and sat nites pre club opening hours. Its a very historic hotel with loads of character and a good cellar. Was once renown for its Bass and does a very good line in Sunday lunches. Has probably got more character than a lot of the pubs in central Yeovil.

17 Nov 2005 21:53

The Rose and Crown, Trent

Once a quaint country village Inn run by the legendary Buff Biggin. Now a glorified brasserie with prices to match. Ales ar'nt too bad though.

17 Nov 2005 14:14

The White Post, Rimpton

Interesting pub this.... with one bar in Dorset and the other in Somerset. Not much choice on ale and a bit too food orientated which is a bit on the pricey side for glorified pub grub. Landlord is a cracking bloke and if you are wondering about the accent.... he is Swedish!

17 Nov 2005 14:12

The Digby Tap, Sherborne

Interesting Pub. Owned since the year dot by the local squires 'The Digby Family' who own Sherborne castles. They lease it out with tight controls regarding what the tennant can and cant do. Good atmosphere and some great guest ales. Can be full of hooray henries down from london at weekends and loud rugby types during the winter months.

The Britannia Inn, Sherborne

Once Eldridge Pope, then Private Ownership now Punch Taverns who have ruined and killed the place. Beer is passable but no atmosphere and staff who dont give a fig if you are there or not. Avoid unless you are desperate for a swift one.
