The Crown, Didcot

Closed and now demolished.

The Lion, Culham

Deemed "no longer economically viable" and converted into a private house in 2009.

The Fishes, North Hinksey Village

the address is North Hinksey Village (not Hinskey)

The Crown, South Moreton

Went there a couple of weeks ago on a Monday evening. The food menu is unexpectedly long. Can they really provide good quality for so many dishes? We had the mixed grill and the lamb shank. Both were good, although my mixed grill was missing its fried egg.

Sadly, not an easy place to work as there is no WiFi.

The Crispin, Harwell

And the conversion into a private house is complete.

The Goose, Britwell Salome

Contrary to previous expectations it has not been transformed into a private house. The pub has been rescued by the nearby farm. In the process it has been renamed The Red Lion and reopened as a restaurant and pub.

Waterwitch, Didcot

Now closed and demolished.

The Great Western Arms, Aynho

Four of us went there for lunch last Saturday. We were surprised at how empty the place was. Although we were there several hours there couldn't have been more than a handful of other sets of people eating.

The food was okay (3 fish and chips and 1 burger). I've had better pub burgers, but the food and drink were fine and the staff attentive.

The Bell, Winslow

The carvery gives good sized portions and the meat is good quality, but otherwise predictable content. The Bell and its carvery is the only place worth eating in Winslow on a Sunday or Monday evening (don't bother with Rosie's Bar for food).

If you are staying at the Bell the breakfast can be very slow. Last week I had to wait 15 minutes before anyone appeared and took my order. But when it did arrive the food was better than you're average hotel breakfast (better than Premier Inns offerings).

The George Inn, Winslow

Seemed to be open this week. But I didn't go in as I was looking for a place to eat. It appeared to have been completely refurbished and looked as if it would be clean and comfortable.

The Cross Keys, Pangbourne

Been going to the Cross Keys once a week since the beginning of the year. The food can be a bit variable (between good and very good) but the burgers are always excellent. Wine list a bit short for the better dishes. Nice to see a place with Scrumpy Jack on tap. The building is small and can it can easily be standing room on quiz nights

The Goose, Britwell Salome

Although, as a restaurant, the Goose won several Michelin stars it is now closed. It is now a private house. The nearby farm shop confirms that fixtures and fittings from the kitchen were sold several weeks ago.

Sad, but perhaps the building was just too small to be profitable. Not enough space for enough customers.

White Lion, Coventry

Went there a few days ago. The food was very popular. Had the scallops; venison and rhubarb crumble. Very good. And a reasonable price. I didn't try the beer as I had a bottle of wine.

The White Lion's web site with menu and drinks list can be found online.

Only problem was the confused ordering mechanism. If you're in t he rest`aurant area then someone takes your order at the table. If you're elsewhere in the pub or outside you need to order at the bar. Unfortunately there are no signs explaining this and the staff don't tell you.

The Swan, Salford

A trendy gatro-pub - polished wood floor and balsamic vinegar. An interesting and varied menu. I enjoyed lamb kebab with spicy couscous - very tender and very rare. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

25 Jun 2006 23:18

The Old Crown, Little Horwood

Sunday food limited to roast lunch.

19 Oct 2005 10:43

The Great Western Bar and Grill, Didcot

Now closed. Awaiting redevelopment.

11 Oct 2005 12:40

The Green Man, Mursley

Good food. Busy Sunday lunchtimes.

11 Oct 2005 12:33

The Bell, Winslow

Good food, good beer. The speciality sausage and mash was very filling. A bit crowded last Sunday as they were hosting a Christening party.

11 Oct 2005 12:25

The Carpenters Arms, Stewkley

Only a small building, therefore can be a bit cramped.
Sunday lunch menu limited to set roasts: pork, beef, lamb, chicken. Wider menu at other times.

26 Sep 2005 13:42

The George and Dragon, Upton

Curiously empty on a bank holiday Saturday evening.

Good food, some home made, but nothing spectacular - lasagne, chilli, curry, burger, steaks and so on.

Sign outside proclaim: Bikers Welcome.

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

Great place. Great pies. Well worth a visit. Often full at the weekend - may need to book if you want to eat.

25 Jul 2005 16:17

The Bugle, Reading

Nice. Quiet. Pleasant. A good place to drink and chat.

25 Jul 2005 16:14

The Angel On The Bridge, Henley-On-Thames

Less busy on weekday evenings. Had excellent pancakes and crepes on Shrove Tuesday. Also had decent roast pheasant during the week. Good value.
