The Cuckfield, Wanstead

Painfully slow service, expensive drinks and SURLY bar staff who think they're far too good to be working there (which ironically, most of the evening, they aren't).

Avoid this dump unless you fancy spending most of your night queuing for a beer.

The Pontefract Castle, Marylebone

Good pub. Nice decor, good range of ales with a reward scheme (buy 4, get 5th free). To top it off, one side leads into St Christopher's Place; great for watching a better class of totty walk by.

Rockys, Buckhurst Hill

This is currently on its 5th or 6th reinvention since the days of the Blue Mondays bar, and is presently a Turkish restaurant.

Pointless me giving a recommendation as it's no longer a bar, although it's just a matter of time until it comes full circle and reopens as some plastic, V.I.P, Bling, R'n'B, free entry for ladies, brrraapppp, Cristal, sunbed, Jack Tweed frequented (pre-sentencing) sort of a place that Essex needs more of.

I'm taking the piss here, obviously...

The Walrus Bar and Hostel, Waterloo

Not bad, now has a 'beer garden' bolted on a little bit further along which is open in more clement weather.

Keep 'em peeled for the landlord - very strange character...

13 Apr 2010 16:53

The Yorkshire Grey, Fitzrovia

nice pub, 4 pints and change from a tenner.

what's not to like?

27 Jul 2009 16:45

O'Neills, Leytonstone

Fight club. avoid this shithole.

27 Feb 2009 17:07

The Orange Tree, Havering Atte Bower

it seems I'm not the only person to doubt the veracity of these claims; thanks for the support biker, chris, zaphod etc.

the reason I posted my original comment pedro is so you can see for yourself how ridiculous the 4 previous comments were. to paraphrase zaphod:

4 very similar posts all 'bigging up' the new management. All made by new members that joined, posted exactly 1 review, then disappeared...

you've been rumbled, get over it.

like I said, risible.

The Orange Tree, Havering Atte Bower

eh? seems like the same person has been writing the 4 reviews below this one. I quote:

'I honestly did not want to leave as the whole experience was reminiscent of the good old days when you just 'ended up in' a pub and were treated like a good friend. The wife and I will be back and we will be taking friends'

Risible.

28 Nov 2008 18:02

The North Star, Leytonstone

best pub in leytonstone. not saying much, I know.

hello, is that caswell euan at the bar?

21 Nov 2008 17:37

The Sun and 13 Cantons, Soho

bit of a dive, watch out for the bouncers.

loads of choice around soho, take a walk and find somewhere better.

The Fire Station, Waterloo

Full of blokes in suits/city boys who will happily pay 10 for 2 drinks. zero space to manoeuvre inside and precious little outside unless you want to sit around the back under the extractor fans blowing rancid fat from mcdonalds (really).

oh, and the bar staff leave sycophantic messages claiming the prices are typical of the area. they're not. there are plenty of cheaper bars just round the corner on lower marsh.

The camel's a better alternative.

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

xenopohobic? a dislike of foreigners? you're getting your big words mixed up. where have I or anyone else been guilty of that? if you re-read my reviews I'm not totally dismissive of the travellers, it IS a nice pub, it DOES serve a good range of beers, but as already stated, it DOES have its share of middle class twits. I don't have to like these any more than I do a pub full of chavs. I do expect a certain level of service though, and yes, I can vote with my feet which I quite often do.

I am entitled to my opinion and this is a place for me to air it. not that damning really, is it? more annoying is the blinkered waffle coming from the regulars/bar staff.

finally, may I quote from the very first comment for this pub back in 2004:

'small but friendly punters, frosty bar staff'.

Just about sums it up.

25 Mar 2008 12:14

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

get over yourself teatotaler, this is a legitimate forum for people's views. the pub's pretty good, that's undeniable, but as for (some) of the locals and the odd member of staff...

still, you can't have everything, right?

19 Feb 2008 17:24

The Cardinal, Victoria

could do with turning a few lights on, very dingy and possesses the most poorly designed toilets I've experienced. that said, the beer's cheap (1.99 a pint), fast service and clientele of varying ages makes for a good night out.

like it.

Auberge, Waterloo

went here recently, have to agree, the staff are typically french, that is to say, rude. reminds me of an excellent episode of the Simpsons where despot Hank Scorpio is threatening to eliminate a country if his demands aren't met:

Hank: By the way, Homer, what's your least favourite country:
Italy or France?
Homer: France.
Hank: [chuckles] Nobody ever says Italy. [sets the coordinates of a
giant laser gun]

you can learn a lot from the Simpsons...

7 Jan 2008 14:48

The Red Lion, Soho

many fond memories of drinking in here with john dryden (not the dead poet). front bar has an open fire, and beer is cheap. back bar much bigger and there's an upstairs dining area, too.

a decent little pub.

20 Dec 2007 17:18

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

listen pubworker2007, I don't pretend to be a detective, the reason I thought it could be the landlord's daughter, was a) the time it was posted, b) the writer is evidently drunk and c) the spelling/grammar is atrocious.

finally, I don't believe you're a bloke for one minute, a man just wouldn't write like that. I'll be in on boxing day, wake up a few of the coffin dodgers at the bar!

happy xmas!

19 Dec 2007 17:38

The Ruby Lounge, Waterloo

terrible dj plays deafening music most nights, pair this with a stupid yank barman trying to be funny and you're in for a long night. nice sofas, though.

13 Dec 2007 12:19

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

pubworker2007 and anonymous both leave entries in the early hours of the morning, a sign of working late shifts, perhaps in a pub? perhaps in the pub in question?

some facts: it's a nice looking pub (both inside and out) and they do have a good range of beers, no question, but read between the lines on a lot of these reviews and there's something up. my earlier comments about being made to feel unwelcome by the boorish locals still stands, if you're not a regular (and happen to be under the age of 50) you'll be looked at with distrust. so in conclusion, a nice pub, shame about the regulars.

do as 'pubworker2007 ' (the landlady's daughter?) and bugger off down the rose and crown instead and talk about the 'boring issues of your life' to the landlord there, he'll take you hard-earned.

nice to be friendly, isn't it?

11 Dec 2007 13:05

The Litten Tree, Brentwood

loud r 'n' b music eh? careful, this sounds like the sort of place that spells 'quiz night' 'quiz nite'. they do?

aaaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh!

29 Oct 2007 17:28

The Bull, Theydon Bois

nice pub, nice beer garden, close to the station. usually have the sport on. ceiling's a bit low in places, mind your head.

hello, is that crowmeister general shouting them in?

16 Oct 2007 13:59

The Fire Station, Waterloo

I know it's a converted fire station, still a crap name.

if they're gonna be literal about things, why not call it 'overpiced'?

12 Oct 2007 17:10

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

referring to the 'anonymous' entry on the 29th @ 13.44, the reason I don't have a good word to say about the pubs I've visited, is that the majority of them are just as I've described; awful. some get good reviews, but these days a good pub is the exception rather than the rule.

ok, some of my comments about your pub were a bit glib, but when I visited, there were boorish, ruddy faced locals at the bar who wouldn't budge to let anyone get a drink. tossers. there's a definite 'local pub for local people' ambience, too.

finally, if you doubt the veracity of my reviews, spend an evening in zulus/the cuckfield/shannon centre, and tell me I'm making my comments up.

sometimes the truth hurts.

3 Oct 2007 14:22

EV Bar, Southwark

Nice big bar, gets pretty busy. food's not bad either.

20 Sep 2007 16:37

O'Neills, Leytonstone

the original and best "Fight Club'. still a dump after all these years.

I'm welling up...

14 Sep 2007 16:23

The Red Lion, Leytonstone

as the spitting image song said 'I've never met a nice south african'.

and you know, in all these years, I haven't. one other thing, it's yes, not yiss!

14 Sep 2007 16:19

The Black Lion, Plaistow

decent pub, great for pre-match drinks ahead of a hammers' match.

two things to note:

1. in the main bar they have an excellent picture of bobby moore (taken in the pub) behind the counter. what a man.

2. veronica (the landlady) has a terrific pair of jugs.

that's got to be worth an 8/10!

14 Sep 2007 16:04

Bar:me, Romford

why anyone in their right mind would want to go out in romford is beyond me. if you've never visited the place, save yourself time and money by going straight to your local A+E and waiting there for the night.

life's short enough.

14 Sep 2007 15:54

The Fire Station, Waterloo

that entry of 25 june 07 is hilarious. would you happen to be the manager of the fire station? '...some great award winning new and old world stuff...' oh per-lease, who writes stuff like that? someone who's trying to justify charging over 6 for a glass of wine, that's who.

if your idea of fun is shouting above the drone of traffic, breathing in exhaust fumes and paying handsomely for the privellige, this is the place for you. rubbish name as well.

6 Sep 2007 14:30

Jets Wine Bar, South Woodford

no longer called jets, it's had a refurb and it's now called click bar (clique would have been more appropriate). looks nice from the outside, but rest assured, it's still full of orange-coloured people listening to rubbish music at a deafening level. the only thing this bar has going for it is the wing sing chinese take away opposite.

bland, really bland. come on people, when did we settle for second best?

5 Sep 2007 14:25

The Horse and Well, Woodford Wells

nice couple running this place, one of the best pubs around. watch out for dennis murphy though, he's a right pest!

27 Jul 2007 16:45

Gios, Chingford

you need pubs like this to keep all the chavs out of the decent places. long may it reign!

27 Jul 2007 16:41

The King William IV, Chigwell

you know when chavs get older? well, this is where they go. nice bar and surroundings, but full of chigwell 'elite'.

interesting fact, did you know there are more sunbeds in chigwell than there are people?

24 Jul 2007 14:02

The Shannon Centre / O'Conners Bar, Seven Kings

locally known as 'fight club'. always rough, but now they play rubbish r'n'b and hip hop instead of chart fodder. great. so you can have a knuckle and listen to usher at the same time. does life get any better?

(I'm being ironic here...)

19 Jul 2007 13:19

The Waverley, Catcliffe

nice bit of unbiased reviewing there from the landlord, sorry, 'wavemaster'. risible.

18 Jul 2007 16:58

Minx, Loughton

what's happened to loughton recently? bars full of big brother wannabes and blokes with rubbish mohican style haircuts, sheep, all of them. if that's not reason enough to avoid, they also play the WORST music around; crappy 2 step r'n'b dross. aaarrrgghh...

Come friendly bombs and fall on loughton! It isn't fit for humans now..

16 Jul 2007 17:44

The Punch And Judy, Covent Garden

don't bother reading what is clearly the ramblings of the manager (below) the punch and judy is a dump. london has much to offer tourists and locals alike, spend your time wisely by avoiding this toilet.

16 Jul 2007 15:03

The Rose and Crown, Woodford Green

great pub, nice beer garden, nicely hidden out the way. come on steve, shout 'em in!

13 Jul 2007 17:16

The Cricketers, Woodford

nice enough little boozer, but where are all the women? at home making tea I expect.

ask the barman if they stock any 'shots' and see the look he gives you!

13 Jul 2007 17:13

The Railway Bell, South Woodford

nice pub, no airs and graces, cheap drinks and they've always got the big games on. handily placed for the tube and the great wing sing across the road.

if that's not encouragement enough, teddy sherringham wouldn't be seen dead in here. get in!

13 Jul 2007 17:04

The Hogshead, South Woodford

once saw teddy sherringham chatting up a dolly bird in here, but that could be any pub, any night of the week. if you're unfortunate, you'll see that m1nge in quite a few of the local hostelries, impressing 15 year old blondes with his 'personality'.

give it up man, your hairstyle's older than they are!

13 Jul 2007 16:57

The George, South Woodford

ok boozer (for the area) but one of the worst designed pubs I've been to; everyone congregates by the bar making it impossible to pass or get served. there's seating out the front too, if you don't mind carbon monoxide poisoning.

hilariously, they've sold the car park off to developers who are building flats on the site, with a lovely view out of your back window onto the side of the cinema/alleyway. it beggars belief...

13 Jul 2007 16:39

The Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

Nice pub, you can regularly spot a c-lister or 2 in here, hey, actors drink too you know! have a few in here and then check out the noodle bar next door, top notch food.

12 Jul 2007 16:43

The Worlds End, Camden

pretty rough and ready. a mate was propositioned here by a bloke looking for 'trade'. maybe he was getting confused with the black cap over the road. maybe it was the black cap over the road? anyway, it is what it is, a big pub full of lowlifes, but then isn't that just a description of camden in general?

12 Jul 2007 14:10

Jerusalem Bar, Fitzrovia

a bar much typical of its area, staffed with out of work actors who deem themselves beyond the job in hand.

listen you deluded, talentless beckham-lites, you're out of work actors for a reason; the bill can only employ so many of you at any one time. you're not gonna be talent spotted in this place, the casting director f*c ked off 20 minutes ago as he had to wait so long to get served!

buy a couple of cans from tesco and plot down with the winos outside the post office, you'll be glad you did.

12 Jul 2007 14:02

The Robin Hood, Dagenham

rough as a badger's arse.

11 Jul 2007 13:58

The Coopers Arms, Chadwell Heath

nice enough boozer, pity about the location. full of blokes who bog you out if you look a bit different. make use of the train staion a minute's walk away and go somewhere decent.

11 Jul 2007 13:52

The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green

kind of place where the piano stops playing as you walk in.

most of these reviews seem fair, you'll get the odd glare from some real ale drinking coffin dodger, but nothing to worry about. you should be more concerned with why you chose to come to this pub in the first place, it ain't for the women; the only girls in here are those serving the drinks, and it ain't for the atmosphere which is akin to a masonic lodge.

leave the inbred locals to themselves, walk 3 minutes down the road to the horse and well, much friendlier.

if the landlady/landlord should happen to read this, your bar smells of wee and your missus has a face like a rat-catcher's glove!

5 Jul 2007 13:59

The Three Colts, Buckhurst Hill

nice pub, nice bar staff, decent clientele.

4 Jul 2007 14:03

The Warren Wood, Buckhurst Hill

full of essex blokes of a certain age who still think they're a bit 'tasty', and if these reviews are anything to go buy, not the brightest, either.

as stated, it's on the way to epping, do yourself a favour and keep driving.

4 Jul 2007 14:02

The Golden Heart, Shoreditch

I was in this pub only last weekend. gets quite busy and can take a while to get served; why don't these places employ more staff? great jukebox, young crowd ('til we walked in) and a friendly atmosphere.

One thing to be aware of: we were stood outside as there's little room inside, and I've never been so hassled by bums/drunks/spongers in all my life. amusing at first but soon grows tiresome. even saw stupid old pete doherty outside later, and yes, he was being hassled by the bums!

4 Jul 2007 13:53

The Shoulder of Mutton, Aldham

I help out at a kid's camp down the road from this place, the landlord has a reputation as not being 'outsider' friendly. His loss, we spend our hard-earned at the superior queen's a few doors up!

29 Jun 2007 17:13

The George, Wanstead

full of drunk 15 year olds or drunk pensioners. except when I'm in there with the lads, and then there are a few drunk 30+ year olds.

Ok pub, be better without the kids, mind.

29 Jun 2007 16:46

Rockys, Buckhurst Hill

a proper dump. my mate's son goes there with his pals, and he's 16. Nuff said!

29 Jun 2007 15:10

The Horse Bar, Waterloo

Avoid the back of this pub unless you want to smell like a greasy spoon. Bland food and expensive drinks.

Ask for a itemised receipt, they over charge!

28 Jun 2007 17:49

The Monkhams Inn, Buckhurst Hill

Apparently this pub will be making way for a new appartment block soon, full of chavs anyway.

Bring on the wrecking ball!

28 Jun 2007 17:40

The Cuckfield, Wanstead

painfully slow service, expensive drinks and SURLY bar staff who think they're far too good to be working there (which ironically, most of the evening, they aren't).

Avoid this dump unless you fancy spending most of your night queuing for a beer.
