The Market House, Bridport

Went for Sunday carvery with the kids this weekend and it was first class. lovely staff, warm and friendly atmosphere and the food was both huge and spot on, well done.

The Hobbs Boat Inn, Bleadon

Stayed here for work a couple of times now and it's been fine both times.. very much a dining/Premier Inn arrangement, but food has been very good, staff are very attentive and it's spotless. Only complaint would be the fully decorated (and lit) 6-foot Christmas Tree on display last night.. September 22nd...come off it.

The Enkel Arms, Holloway

This is a proper pub, full of real people, noisy, bit drab, lots of telly's with the racing on, irish, market crowd, cold beer.. I love it.

The Plough, Norwood Green

Went yesterday, and it was great. Cold, frosty November day, walked through Osterley Park to get here. Roaring log fire, superb London Pride and an absolutely first class cheeseburger. Very local but still very friendly, will be back.

The Penderel's Oak, Holborn

Spent the evening in here this week and thought it was fine. Good range of ales and bottled beers, prompt service despite it being quite busy.. been in once before but didn't realise the downstairs bar was there - moved down there and spent the rest of the night in a cosy corner feeling very chilled out, I like it! BUT - closing that downstairs bar at 1030 sends my rating from a 8 to a 6. why, why why?!

The Rose and Crown, Ealing

Only a snapshot I know but came here for the first time for a long time on Saturday night, only 2 girls serving, one had to disappear to serve food, leaving 1 covering the 2 bars. Bunch of old blokes drinking out of tankards sat at the bar, blowing clouds of smoke over staff and others waiting, who had to order drinks through them, why don't they sit at one end? Waited 10 minutes for service and left. went over to the New Inn, was busier in there but had had 4 or 5 staff on, got served immediately. Basics.

T J Duffys, Northfields

Would normally go to the Spinning Wheel for footy, but saw today's game on board outside and a new plasma on the wall of the new extension.. went in with 3 friends but found the tables in there all set for lunch/dinner complete with wine glasses.. some people already there eating/waiting for food.. didn't want to be hooting and hollering while they ate so watched it on the little tv above the door. All Tommy's Ireland stuff removed leaving faded marks on the undecorated walls, for some reason the bar's been strewn with fairy lights, Ubiquitous polish barmaid. Burger OK, chips reheated I think. All very mediocre. Lets hope the new people have plans to get this place back the way it was.

The Old House at Home, West Wittering

Horrible pub, miserable staff, food poor and took ages to arrive, will not be returning.

Chequers, Leominster

Found ourselves in Leominster for a wedding - had checked BITE first for pre-service ales and would have avoided the Chequers based on the 2 reviews here. On finding the church, we discovered the Chequers was right across the road - looked good from the outside, had a peek in, still good, so gave it a go; top beer, good Westons Cider and good honest pub grub at reasonable prices, friendly staff and a landlady who actually cares about customers what they think of the pub. Great stuff, would recommend.

Greyhound, Bridport

We ended up in the Greyhound after a fruitless search for a restaurant in Bridport outside of the holiday season - grill night was great value and obviously popular, food was spot on.Usual large range of the JDW ales and ciders. Place is a bit souless, lots of small seating areas including an almost separate room, but no complaints.

The Cramond Inn, Cramond

Doesn't open til 1200 on a Sunday, queues outside and then a mad rush for tables and ordering. Sam Smiths is good ale but could not believe the lack of any decent whisky or other spiritse for afterwards, very strange. Could be so much better.

Captain Mannerings, Shoeburyness

Bit of a state, full of wide boys and chavs. Some interesting Dad's Army stuff on the walls, but the fact they've had to spell it Mannering instead of the correct Mainwaring says it all.

The Woolpack, Slad

A fantasy pub, nestling on the slopes of Slad Valley, rough cider, perry and fine ales, and views that are almost unreal. Lovely circular walk from the pub around the valley is a great way to build up a thirst.

Shannons, Hounslow

The message on the windows makes me want to gag, and that's from the car as I sit in traffic outside everyday..
"Where people go to meet people who meet people who meet people at Shannons" or some such drooling gibberish... (also a rip off of All Bar One I think..)
Used to go here when it was the Chariot in the early 90s and it was great.. went for a pint the other week and was happy to leave uninjured and with the possessions I came in with.. a subculture of society dwells within, avoid.

The Kings Arms, Soho

I put the ATM in this pub when Willy was the landlord.. he was a top man, bought me a pint for my birthday and was very sad to go back weeks later to find he'd died suddenly. Not my scene but seemed a decent place and the ale was excellent.

18 Feb 2005 21:41

The Pheasant, Harlington

Been for (family) dinners at the restaurant a few times now and always feel they go for quantity rather than quality.. fine if you go want to stuff yourself with fatty meat, potatoes and deep-fried things from frozen, but if not, avoid. Weird interior in the restaurant, can be quite claustrophobic if you end up in the eaves!

Royal Hart, Ashford

Great if you're 16, up for pool and a fight. horrible decor, plain nasty.
