The Cornubia, Bristol

Whilst there is a nice beer selection and the two we tried were in good nick, what the hell is going on with with all the Union Jacks, St George flags etc etc. There are flags surrounding the garden, the bar, in fact everywhere you look, and even union jack cushions for Christ's sake! Don't sit down if you are not English? This isn't patriotism, more like an unpleasant taste of nationalism, perhaps the like of which you might expect to see in a back street boozer in St George, .....it felt like walking into a BNP convention on a Saturday afternoon. My partner, who is not British, felt most unwelcome and uncomfortable. And the awful overly loud (for 2pm on a Saturday) piped into the garden music, complete with words such as "fucking" this and "fucking" that, did not add to the experience, notwithstanding the fact that we were sat in the garden with our 5 year old daughter. Will not be back to this horrible nasty inclusive little Englander hangout.....used to be a lovely pub too.

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

I agree with previous post and well done LukeD for spotting the grudgebearer. I have always had excellent beer and service here, and thought the post by Nova7 a bit odd, but didn;t realise he left another negative one for Arbor's other pub, the Old Stillage. Nova7 obviously has an axe to grind and, message to other punters, don't let this put you off a visit to this pub. You could also walk up the road to visit the Bag O Nails too, but don't be too drunk when you get there (hey, LukeD, only kidding!)

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

What happened to the 'customer always being right' ?!

The Robin Hood's Retreat, Bishopston

The beer selection today was very poor - 3 out of 8 on, with the choice being Bombardier, Bob, and one from Thwaites's. The one served was just about OK. Pity, as this used to be a pub that took its ale seriously. Worse, were the smokers outside in the 'non-smoking' area. I pointed this out to the bar person who said, no, it was OK to smoke there. What about the signs said I? (there are two very visible signs stating no smoking on the windows) Er, they must be put on the wrong way around. Not a clever answer. Oh dear - at this rate I will be limiting my pub life to about three pubs.....just ongoing crap service, and serving crap produce (see my review of the 'Pump House') Goodbye Robin Hood's sodding Retreat

The Commercial Rooms, Bristol

Lovely beers from Plain ales today, and the place is back in the GBG. Aesthetically not the best which you have to expect from a 'spoons, but beer top notch today and that's what I was here for.....

The Pump House, Hotwells

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! ALE DRINKERS AVOID. We stopped by for a quick pint or two. Hmm, I thought fairly interesting choice of ale: Butcombe, Otter, Tribute and Gloucester Gold. tried a pint of the latter which unfortunately was cloudy and slightly sour. Upon returning the pint, the sympathetic bar lady needed to draw attention to her 'superior', who came over. The attitude from this gentlemen and also from someone I believe was called 'Steve' (the manager?) was that it is supposed to be cloudy but if 'he wants to change it then we canl'. I tried to point out that, aside from a few 'wheat beers' real ale is in fact NOT supposed to be served cloudy and a thus fawlty towersesque conversation ensued where this particular Basil would not back down on his argument that Tribute and other ales are supposed to be cloudy. Please do not argue with your customers, when the product your are serving is substandard - would you do the same thing if it was food? Again, an example of a pub, just by being in an 'attractive' location, making bugger all effort in terms of quality of produce or customer service. Oh, and the subsequent pint of Butcombe was flat, but of course, I did not return this one, as it is probably supposed to be served flat, and at possibly at room temperature well. Will not be returning to this one!

The Bowl Inn, Lower Almondsbury

Nice country pub in a quiet location next to the church in Almondsbury. Our visit was, however, totally let down by the very poor quality of the beer. Two pints, Butcombe and Everard's Tiger, served 100% flat. In my experience, flat beer seems to be the most common problem when it comes to quality, a problem which is exasperated by the fact that I have been told by (un) knowledgable bar staff on more than one occasion that it is 'supposed to be' flat. No it isn't, and you are ripping your customers off by serving a sub-standard product.

27 Aug 2012 15:29

The Crown Inn, Churchill

The PG steam was perfect, with lots more to choose from. Beautiful pub, large garden, with owners that care about the ale. Faultless

29 Jul 2012 20:59

The Plough, Pilning

Nice country pub with a big garden. But, as has been stated. beer choice uninspired, only Wadworth's 6X and Henry's IPA, the latter served flat.

21 Jul 2012 17:21

The Hare On The Hill, Bristol

Love the HOTH, but what a boring selection of beer - what happened to the guest ales? Only Gem, Barnsey and Spa on. And the Barnsey was in average nick. Disappointing. And I think Barnstormer was a much better name, for what it's worth.

7 May 2012 16:07

The Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol

Love the pub but unfortunately I don;t always find the ale quality top notch. The Arbor Ales (one of their single hop variety) was served flat and lifeless and the Dawkins Mild had a hint of vinegar about it - definitely past its best. If you are going to charge these prices, please serve a decent product.

7 May 2012 16:04

Start the Bus, Bristol

Not your usual place to find a stock of real ales: studenty, "chilled" and pretentious. Returned a pint of Black Gold as it was off ("this is probably the first pint we have poured of this all day" said that barmaid ominously. It was 6pm). A raised eyebrow when returned, but exchanged to Butcombe which was cloudy and as tired as I was. Go for a latte or a lager. Not somewhere to try ale.

30 Mar 2012 15:27

The Beehive, Bristol

Pleasant pub and family friendly - large garden out back. Only two ales on the dreaded Doom Bar and Wickwar's BOB, which we settled for and was in great nick. Worth a look.

3 Mar 2012 19:27

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

Another visit saw four ales tried and all four were in perfect condition, our favourite being the Yeovil ales Lynx Wildcat - sublime! Why can't more pubs - and I also mean the ones listed in the GBG - just try to get this right. There was a lovely 'country pub' atmosphere in here early on NYE. Cannot be faulted on any level.

2 Jan 2012 21:52

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

Really like the new decor and much needed spruce up. The ale quality wasn't quite up there on our visit though. The potholer was a bit tired and my alligator ale from Ascot was woefully flat. Will give it another go as love the pub, and hope for better next time.

2 Jan 2012 21:46

The Wellington, Horfield

Much improved pub over the years and quite handy for those that seek out child friendly places. It was really disappointing though to be served a sub standard pint recently, ask for it to be changed and be told that it is 'supposed to be served like that'. Quite a hooha was made of it until the landlord was called and said that it looked a bit iffy and told the barman to change it if that was what I wanted. Brought to mind the 'dirty fork' Monty Python sketch. For the record, the pint of Barnstormer that replaced it was faultless.

2 Jan 2012 21:40

The Llandoger, Bristol

A dismal experience. Flat beer, zero atmosphere. Can we have a whip round and buy this pub back from Brewer's Fayre? This pub should be part of Bristol's heritage and this company have p*ssed all over it. Tragic.

5 Dec 2011 19:58

The Fleece And Firkin, Bristol

You come herfe for the bands and not the beer but relieved to see that they had an ale straight from the cask "Bristol Steam" when here last night, which was decent enough. Apart from that they have a keg version of London Pride.

13 Nov 2011 20:05

The Cornubia, Bristol

Re-visited at the insistence of Mrs D, and have to say, all the beers (4 tried) were in excellent nick! Interesting choice, and particularly enjoyed the house Autumn Ale (couldn't see who the brewery was but lovely stuff)

29 Oct 2011 12:53

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

Fist visit for ages and what a pub! Tastefully refurbished, fantastic choice of ale: tried the VPA (Vale Brewery) and Dark Star Original - both were sublime. Really good atmosphere and knowledgeable bar staff. Faultless 10/10

29 Oct 2011 12:49

The Guildhall, Folkestone

Appalling service recently. When served a warm pint of Ruddles last week, I decided to take it back only to be told by the serving person 'it is supposed to be served at room temperature'. She then took a sip and said it tastes alright to me! Her opinion was challenged, and the other person behind the bar grudgingly - eventually - told her to change it. And this in a dive that was recommended in this year's GBG. Don't go to Folkestone often but if I do, will not be going here again. It is with this kind of bad attitude and hopeless customer service that we see people staying away from pubs and drinking at home, and who can blame them. You, lady, are a disgrace and full update on its way to Camra where I hope your entry is rescinded

3 Oct 2011 21:23

The Albion, Clifton

Kevmac, as other pubs in Clifton manage to sell beers for less than 3.70, typically 3.40, I do think it is worth 'moaning' about. Also, as this is called 'Beer in the Evening' , I believe that it is logical that people posting would concentrate on the ale rather than on the food that places serve - they can always go to 'Eat out' and suchlike websites to do that. Cheers 'love'.

30 Sep 2011 13:59

The River, Bristol

Yes, now called No1 Harbourside. Much much better than its previous incarnation with 4 ales on including Bristol Beer Factory, Butcombe, and one from Isle of Purbeck. Beer quality OK (Sunrise) but not so (Fossil Fuel) It would be nice if the staff didn't look like you just pissed in their chips when you ask for a taste before buying. Especially if quality can't be trusted.

29 Sep 2011 21:09

The Albion, Clifton

Fist visit since around 2004, and the place has certainly gone upmarket, now called, rather grandly The Albion Public House and Dining Rooms' Um, quite. Bar staff seemed to welcome the fact that I only wanted a pint. The Cornish Coaster was fine, but for a whopping 3.70 it had better be! 3 other ales on: Otter Bitter, Spa, and the awful Doom Bar. Conversation abounds with talk of second homes and high cost of house prices (ie, like it's a good thing)

29 Sep 2011 21:02

The Seven Stars, Bristol

Great selection of interesting beers, all served in excellent condition from a knowledgeable bar person. What more is there to say? 10/10

17 Sep 2011 17:23

The Cornubia, Bristol

Attended the GBG 2012 launch on the 16th Sep of which the Cornubia is back in this year. Alas! once again, the beer was served flat. C'mon guys, check the quality before taking people's hard earned cash! Went round the corner to the Seven Stars which was much, much better. Will be giving the C'bia a miss in future as I cannot afford to throw my money away on sub standard product. Not good enough, I'm afraid

17 Sep 2011 17:21

The Slug and Lettuce, Bristol

What is a pub? I wouldn't classify this place as such. A soulless bland large room with tables and chairs that sells alcoholic drinks such as half price cocktails. No real ale, no atmosphere, no f**ing chance that I will be returning

27 Aug 2011 08:50

The White Lion, Westbury on Trym

Alas, since my last post have visited on a few more occasions and the ale quality is going downhill in terms of quality and choice. Also, as seems to be the case with more than one pub in Westbury, the Abercrombie & Fitch chavs with buzz cuts and tattoos from the rough neighbouring estates of Southmead and Henbury have taken it over. A real roughhouse atmosphere in here on a Friday night. Anyhow, back to the ales, the pub seems to promote its interest in real ale and has guests from interesting, not often seen in Bristol, breweries. Problem is, they are often served in poor condition. The two tried last evening were flat and one was on the turn and vinegary. A problem with turnover is guess, and most of the above were on the Stella and suchlike. A real shame.

20 Aug 2011 09:14

The White Horse, Westbury on Trym

What the hell has happened to this pub? First visit in a couple of years, and looks like the place is overrun by thugs. Away from the intimidating mob in the main bar (and I include the two staff in that), you have a few snugs, nooks and crannies. All these areas totally empty on a Friday night. Of all the barrels behind the bar, only Butcombe and Bass were being served - the former was totally flat and undrinkable. What used to be a lovely characterful ale house ruined by owners who look like they don't give a toss - tragic.

20 Aug 2011 09:05

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol

Attended the POT's first beer festival last night, and although great that they have put this thing on, sad to say that some of the ales were not served in great nick (how this is possible during a beer festival when the ales are bought in specifically, perhaps someone could let me know!). The Tawny Owl was totally flat as was the Proper Job . The former was taken back where is was commented by the staff that perhaps 'it wasn't poured correctly by the bar women' Oh dear. And they carried on serving this one - the chaps to our left were commenting on the poor quality. Also, at least two of the beers were served cloudy - Lighthouse, and the Arbor Ales. The BB Factory Acer was fantastic, So cheers to the POT for the festival, but please try to up the quality next time

20 Aug 2011 08:58

Westbury Park Tavern, Bristol

The sign outside boasts 'freehouse' so what do you get? An interesting selection of real ales? Nope, the usual suspects, the increasingly insipid-bland Doom Bar, Butcombe and Bombardier. Risked a whopping 3.60, yes, 3.60 on a just about passable pint of Butcombe. Different channels of Sky Sports emanating from two, or was it 3, TV screens. Served by a sulky teenager. And please do tell, what is the point of the 'Cask Marque' ? Not the first time I've had a dodgy pint in one of 'marqued' pubs., a wholly untrustworthy and sustainable way of monitoring pubs ale quality so it seems. Certainly won;t be back to this mediocre hovel. Nipped over the road to Waitrose and bought an interesting selection of bottled beers, including the superb 'Jaipur' from Thornbridge. Some pubs are just killing themselves really

3 Jul 2011 11:41

The Bank, Bristol

Been in a few times recently and all the ales sampled were in excellent nick on each occasion, and there is usually an interesting selection on offer out of the three pumps. Recommended.

18 May 2011 14:18

The Cornubia, Bristol

Interesting selection of beers and great service but I have to say that, of the four tried, all of them were served flat or at best, slightly flat and not in tip top condition. A disappointment, I'm sorry to say.

18 May 2011 14:16

The White Lion, Westbury on Trym

Looks like new owners are in here. There were five or six ales on and the three we tried in great nick. They have the usual suspects, ie Doom Bar, Butcombe etc, but also interesting guest beers from Acorn Brewery, Barnsley, Adnams and the new brew from Butcombe Old Vic. Inside is a bit bland but they do have a well kept, attractive garden. Recommended.

9 Apr 2011 10:31

Cafe Bar One Nine, Keynsham

Don't come here for real ale - only Courage Best Keg. If you don't mind that then it is a fairly inoffensive sort of place, and service was fine. Won't be back due to lack decent beer though

3 Apr 2011 21:05

The Robin Hood, Bristol

Totally endorse clevedonquaffer's comments below about the ale - the Hophead and Yeovil ale particularly good BUT (and there's always a but) crikey, it was as dead as a doornail here last Sat night. Please turn off the TV and put some music on or do something - perhaps everyone was at the Green Man beer festival up the road.

30 Mar 2011 21:27

Colston Yard, Bristol

Agree with Beatles in that the decor was better when it was the Brewery Tap, but I have to say that the beers today were fantastic: tried the Butcombe Old Vic (the new porter), BBFactory's Acer and a simple pint of Butcombe Beer - which when served how it should be is a lovely pint. Also tried the food which was really impressive. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the ales. Really, really impressed and will return soon

2 Feb 2011 21:13

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol

Comfortable pub spilt into two areas, a quiet lounge and livelier bar. Ale-wise you get Courage Best, Bass, Otter Bitter and Doom Bar plus one guest.. Was recently served a less than great pint of Otter and was mentioning to my partner that it wasn't THAT great when the barman (LL?), when overhearing, asked if I wanted it changed, saying that it was due to being near the end of the barrel. The next one served up was tip top condition. The same chap seems to have a photographic memory when remembering who is next in line to be served AND remembers what you had been drinking when you return...and this in a pretty packed pub on a Sat night. I hand you... my nomination for best barman in Bristol 2010.

7 Nov 2010 16:16

The Victoria Inn, Westbury On Trym

The Victoria is a long standing entry in the GBG, so made a point of seeking it out on a recent crawl around Westbury. My overwhelming sense when leaving was that it could be a lot better. As a Wadworth pub, you get the range of their mediocre beers, and the one we tried - Strong in the Arm - was served flat and, in my opinion, far too cold. I believe that they usually have at least one guest but the one on when we visited was 'Butcombe'., not particularly adventurous! Inoffensive, nice enough interior, BUT beer could have been better and, with this in mind, I'm not sure if we will be back.

7 Nov 2010 09:32

The William Henry, Weymouth

A much brighter W'spoons than usual. Fairly good range of ales although the ones sampled tasted just about within their sell by date.
Worth a mention here however, is the local supermarket LONDIS, just across the road. They have the best selection of real ales I have ever seen from far and wide. (I spoke to the manager who said it was his personal project). Terrific stuff, and worth a look.

18 Oct 2010 14:39

The Red Lion, Weymouth

A visit mid afternoon found the pub nearly totally bereft of customers. Barman - landlord? - not exactly pleased to see us which is a surprise thinking that he probably needs the custom. Five ales on including a grudgingly served superb pint of Jurassic from nearby Dorset Brewing Company. Also tried the Red Lion ale which was also good and Skinner's Betty Stogs. Tastefully done out with lots of wood and maritime paraphernalia. Mrs Dandillus (senior version) said it the place could have done with a good dust, but she also says that when she visits us so nothing to worry too much about there. All in all, a very nice pub with excellent ales. A quick course in good customer service and could be even better.

16 Oct 2010 17:39

The Duke of Cornwall, Weymouth

On first impressions the pub seems a bit down at heel and this didn't leave us throughout the half an hour we stayed. The pub advertises in colourful pen in its window their entry in the GBG, but when upon entry to the gaff you see just a few locals crowding the bar drinking 'stella' and probably bemoaning foreigners and suchlike you have to worry. Barmaid ran a bit of liquid through the pipes as 'you never know what's in there' and then served a sub-standard Dorset Ale, which had to be taken back. Tried the Jail Ale which was passable -just. Place is also over-run by bloody dogs which you have to step over on your way to the bar. Totally underwhelming.

16 Oct 2010 17:27

The Vittoria, Clifton

Two guests on from Wychwood: not a brewery I rate that highly but the seasonal brew Bountiful was sublime. Landlord seemed friendly enough - previously managed the White Lion, and was enthusiastic about the ale. Quietly impressed and will be back for further visits.

5 Oct 2010 13:28

Inn On The Green, Horfield

Incredibly this pub listed in Good Beer Guide 2011 despite serving consistently sub standard ale. Not good CAMRA, not good....

4 Oct 2010 10:38

Inn On The Green, Horfield

First visit for ages and was pleased to see a wide range of interesting beers. Alas! then we starting drinking them . Of the 12 ales on offer, we tried 10 different half's and I would say only the Codrington Best Bitter was served how it should be. The problem with most of them was that they were served very very flat. Weymouth Best Bitter is a delicious brew which was served insipid and lifeless by this establishment, surely a crime against the brewers. I saw a lot of other ale quaffers looking quizzically at the below standard beer that they were being served - a lot of it cloudy. A pathetic performance and the owners and/or staff need retraining on how to store and serve real ale.

28 Aug 2010 11:23

The Barley Mow, Bristol

If the beer quality is anything to go by, then you'd have to say that sadly the BM has gone downhill. Served very ordinary beer, and although the barman agreed to change it , albeit with raised eyebrows and a surely some mistake look about his person, the second one requested was just as bad with the initial beer complained about carrying on being served regardless of the fact that it was way past it's sell by date. Also the latter - replacement beer - which was a long way from how it should be , was from their own Bristol Beer Factory range . Hmm, if you cannot serve your own beer in decent nick, then WHAT IS THE POINT? . Oh dear oh dear, not deserving a GBG entry on this form. Very , very disappointing.

29 Jul 2010 21:32

Smugglers Inn, Osmington Mills

Considering this is BEER in the Evening, it would be nice if the reviewers could comment on that rather than the food!!

20 Jul 2010 15:16

The Star Inn, Crowlas

We made a special effort (well, got off the bus), to visit here and it was well worth it. Penzance ales served and all the ones tried were perfect - as you would expect as they are brewed on the premises. Lovely to visit a pub in Cornwall with something other than St Austell and Skinners on the menu,. Friendly welcome from the LL, and the interior has real character and some interesting locals. I would urge any discerning ale to visit. It's a big 10 from me and Mrs D.

16 Jul 2010 15:10

The Ship Inn, Mousehole

For some reason this pub didn't quite cut it for me. The LL seemed pretty miserable with his lot and ungracious when serving you, and the other staff weren't a lot better. Given the pub's surroundings and history I found it a bit charmless and, as someone else mentioned, they know that the punters are coming, it's the only pub in the village so why make the effort. Another problem lies in the fact that any time spent in Cornwall you will soon get sick to your back teeth of the same old beers in every pub. Tribute, Proper Job et al. St Austell Ales monopolise the pubs here and you never see a guest ale in any of their outlets. It's not like I don;t like their beers: I do, and have even visited the brewery, but it all gets a bit samey after a while. Average and certainly not worth 8.4 or whatever the rating here is.

16 Jul 2010 15:03

The Seven Stars, Bristol

RE: comment by Beatles38 - I was thinking that phonejacker1 was an_ecumenical_matter regenerated. Whatever happened to him?

31 May 2010 21:28

The Moon and Sixpence, Tintern

A bit hit and miss. The ale needed to be taken back on one occasion and second night was served flat. They serve three ales: all from the Wye Valley brewery. Not too keen on the giggling in-breds congregating around the bar either. On the plus side, it is a nice spot to sit outside and admire the view.

21 May 2010 17:32

The Brockweir Country Inn, Brockweir

Quiet backwater location. Has a small garden out back which could do with a bit of TLC. However, landlord was friendly enough and on our visit 3 ales were on Wye Valley HPA, Butcombe and Kingstone Gold (a local micro brewery). Cosy interior and locals were OK. Worth a look if in the area.

21 May 2010 17:29

The Lazy Dog, Bristol

Lots of money has been spent here: the old rundown Ashley Arms has been gutted and reopened as the above moniker. Very unusual layout with on one side there leather (or leather looking) seated booths with tall US-style) aluminium bar stools facing the wall and the other side plain tables and chairs. Fairly conservative ale choice - 2 from Bristol Beer Factory, one Bath Ales and one Moles (I think the three ales might be permanent fixtures with the Moles being a rotating guest but the staff didn't seem to be too sure about this). Large decked garden out back and the toilets were spotless. Ale quality was OK and I would say definitely worth a look but might not be everyone's cup of tea and with the fairly dull ale choice (which you can find elsewhere), not sure whether it's worth making a special effort to return.

5 May 2010 21:16

David Prothero, Neath

Bizarre layout, mish mash of tables and chairs. Bar man friendly enough and offered a taster of the ales. No Welsh beers on which was a disappointment and the pint I had was just OK (Holden's). Not too bad then, but really worth making the effort to get yourself down to the Borough Arms, a 10 minute walk away.

29 Apr 2010 09:04

The Borough Arms, Neath

Reading through the other reviews, there is not too much to add. The pub is a little tricky to find in its back street location, but is well worth the effort. Very much a local's pub, very mellow atmosphere and not at all unfriendly to out of towners. 4 ales on on my visit and the two I tried were in perfect nick (Davenports and Clarks). Wooden panelled bar and loved the 70's patterned carpet. A loved and looked after traditional old pub. Marvellous.

29 Apr 2010 09:01

St Georges Hall, Redfield

Just when I thought the place was achieving consistency.... . popped in on a Friday beer festival night and saw 4 ales on (if you don't include the Abbot, Ruddles production line GKing stuff). The first tried - Spring Chicken - was served cloudy and was exchanged although this didn't deter the staff from carrying on serving it. The Goose Island Honkers Ale was flat and lifeless although there was evidence in the taste that it was a really good beer when in decent nick. Settled for Hydes Over a Barrel which didn't cut it either and definitely not as fresh as it could/should have been. Makes you wonder about Wspoon's corporate beer festivals really and the lack of local ales, how about supporting the local craft brewers and showcasing their wares? Really poor effort and a good example of how not to serve real ale.

24 Apr 2010 22:37

Old Stillage, Redfield

Yob contingent seems to be at around 50% of what it used to be (and this was a |Friday night), and there was evidence of a different type of punter starting to give the place a go. The Arbor ales were all excellent and there was a sublime guest ale from Plain Ales.

24 Apr 2010 22:16

The Three Sugar Loaves, Bristol

I think Blackthorn is about right in the previous review. The 3SL has had alot of different owners over the last few years but no-one seems bothered to put the effort in. It is a pub of historical interest and surely must have huge potential, but every time I have dropped in over the last couple of years, there is no atmosphere, hardly any punters and it has been a very forgettable experience. For the record, Otter, Ringwood 49er and Bombardier were the ales on. They were all in good nick and the service was good. It is not a bad pub, but just could be so much better.........

18 Apr 2010 18:40

The Bunch of Grapes, Bristol

This place has lost a lot of its, no, ALL of its character since being refurbished. Ripped out most of the old fixtures and fittings, and replaced by bland pubs r us furniture. The lights were uncomfortably and unnecessarily bright, which everybody in our group commented on. They still have live music but the 'singer'/ 'guitarist' in last night was just awful, wailing loudly and badly out of tune to about five punters. For the record, last night's ale choice was an uninspiring and average Doom Bar, flat Bombardier and OKish Spitfire. Oh, and when doing the place up, they seemed to have forgot the toilets, which haven't been touched since about 1987 and stank to high heaven. A pub ruined.

4 Apr 2010 11:38

The Great Western Hotel, Exeter

Ales from O'Hanlons and RCH dominate - the latter's IPA and Yellow Hammer in perfect nick. Somewhat tired interior, locals congregating around the bar and a bit Twin Peaks but not unfriendly. Good place for a pint after missing your train, will definitely visit again, but the irritating golden oldies - Gold FM? - on then radio could be done away with.

31 Mar 2010 22:11

The Seven Stars, Bristol

The pub may not be pretty to look at but this is a top notch real ale quaffer's delight. The beers are from far and wide, some from fairly obscure micro breweries. There are usually a range of ale types, for example, tonight was an IPA, Yorkshire bitter, Stout, Mild. They were all, ALL served in tip top condition. Surely a contender for CAMRA pub of the year. Oh, hang on........ well done all around. 10/10

26 Mar 2010 22:29

The Bank, Bristol

Mr Bank, looking back at the review I left - it's a bit overly grumpy and harsh in retrospect which I thought I needed to acknowledge. I do like the idiosyncrasies of the pub - and always been decent music on when I've been in and good atmosphere. I'm pretty sure there were only two ales on but hey ho, I'll look forward to next visit . Cheers.

24 Mar 2010 17:55

The Bank, Bristol

Just to judge this place purely from an ale perspective, the word that springs to mind is inconsistent. There were only two out of four ales on tonight, the Moors Revival was in excellent nick but the other (name escapes me,) was flat and really, given the competition for - and the good pubs that missed out on in 2010 - GBG entries, makes this establishment's inclusion in the book questionable to say the least. The gents toilet thing is just an annoyance, oh ha ha non regulars don't know where the toilet is. Yes, and the words 'grow up' spring to mind.

18 Mar 2010 23:02

Knights Templar, Bristol

Much better than usual today - served within 2 minutes and the place was packed to the rafters! Decent pint of the - hard to find on draft - Dark Hare to boot. Definitely an improvement on previous visits.

12 Mar 2010 22:18

Graze Bar and Chophouse, Bristol

A different kind of venture from Bath Ales, and one which generally disappointed on every level. Full of diners on Saturday night which is good for their profit margins but I have to say we did not get a particularly warm welcome from staff when we said we had only came in for a pint or two. Actually I would say that there is probably little point in coming here for a pint - they only had - yawn - Spa and Gem on anyway and Gem was not in tip top order (they did have the B Ales full range in bottles in the fridge - perfect temp for real ale....). By the way, what is it with Bath Ales pubs and a usual complete lack of guest ales? Surely one or two wouldn't break the bank? Can't comment on food as didn't try it. I do not recommend from an ale perspective - far more interesting and welcoming places in the local vicinity.

8 Mar 2010 20:30

The Prince Of Wales, Westbury on Trym

It's a lovely old pub full of antique paraphernalia, old typewriters, clocking in machines etc. A shame then that such a snobby atmosphere permeates and the bar staff are neither friendly nor welcoming. For the record, they have Butcombe. Courage Best, Bath Spa, London Pride and Butcombe IPA. The beer was in OK nick. Not terribly exciting and not worth going out of your way for.

22 Jan 2010 16:50

The Raven, Bath

Really impressed with the quality of the ale and the service. The Butts Traditional was sublime and atmosphere good. What more can you say?

31 Dec 2009 18:57

The Old Green Tree, Bath

Argh, one of my all time best pubs has just been taken down a few pegs. The Abbey Ales 12th Night was cloudy - although changed on request. The bar women had a really bad attitude, discourteous and not really aware of good customer service. The place just smelt of complacency and no-one was making the effort any more. Has moved down from 'essential' to 'OK if you're passing' when on a visit to Bath

31 Dec 2009 18:54

The Coeur de Lion, Bath

Much improved since Abbey Ales take over - the ales were in fine fettle and particularly impressed with the Otley 01. Much less full of local snobbery and much more friendly than it used to be.

31 Dec 2009 18:49

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

Yes - as documented in our local rag, Pints West - the LL from the Plume of Feathers has taken over here. Really nice chap, and a friendly welcome was had. The beers had Arbor Ales dominating with three from that brewery - Brigstowe, Beech Blonde and Oyster Stout plus TT Landlord and one from Cotswold Spring. Not sure which were guests and which were permanent fixtures. As others have commented, it was also really quiet, with only a handful of punters in which is a pity as this place has huge potential and in a good location. I wish them well and will be back to offer my support by drinking as much of their perfectly kept beer as possible. You should do the same.

29 Dec 2009 15:06

The River, Bristol

Hopeless - the one ale was Bath Ales Festivity, great you might think until you get a waft of vinegar emanating up from the glass. The bar chap did offer to change it but a bit pointless when it's the only ale they serve. The food was dire and we were refunded. Not recommended on any level unless you fancy a pint of lager to wash down your badly warmed up microwave dinner - PING! it does tell a story you know.

29 Dec 2009 14:52

The Watershed Cafe Bar, Bristol

Three pumps but no ales on yesterday which was disappointing and a poor effort really. Didn't stick around so cannot comment on anything else- looked fairly busy.

29 Dec 2009 14:47

St Georges Hall, Redfield

After previous disappointing visit , on today's showing there was a vast improvement in service and the two beers - RCH Steamin' Santa and GWB Golden Ale - were served in tip top. perfect condition. OK, so will never be as aesthetically pleasing as other ale houses in terms of decor and ambience, hey it is a w'spoons after all......we shouldn't expect too much, but there is some evidence of an effort being made, what with all the Xmas decorations, tree etc.
Some of the clientele should be approached with a considerable amount of caution, some of which seem to be more than just 'pissed' and could be into other types of recreational stimulants, BUT, as a local chap, it is still the best pub in the area for a good reliable pint.

22 Dec 2009 18:45

The Lansdown, Bristol

I would echo other people's comments about the good beer choice - Arbor Ales Oyster Stout, Potholer, Tribute, Barnstormer, and one from Severn Vale called Session. Not sure which, or if any of these are guests or permanent. It was a pity though that the quality wasn't really up there. Both the Potholer and the Session were served flat - the potholer was in particularly poor condition and the Stout didn't quite cut it either - and perhaps this is why it isn't in the GBG. Disappointing really and not cheap either - I think all ales were 3.30 plus per pint. . May give it another go to see if improved at some point. Well, maybe...

20 Dec 2009 10:30

The Seven Stars, Bristol

Yes - there has certainly been no sign of a down turn in quality since LL change. Seven ales on - a really good range of different types. The Rudolph from Stonehenge and O Hanlons Port Stout were served in tip top condition and enjoyed the eclectic range of music being played. The service was excellent - the welcome was warm and really, this is a pub really worth the effort of going out of your way to visit. A ten out of ten from me.

17 Dec 2009 20:14

Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford

On the plus side - good choice of ales from breweries such as Evan Evans, Dark Star, Bedfordshire, Brakspear, although I thought the chocolate stout (Dark Star) served too warm. They really need to sort out the smell emanating from the Gents every time the door opened very unpleasant wafts came our way, and the building itself lacks any kind of ambience apart from that of a kind of local community centre with hand pumps. The piped Bryan Adams and other such drivel didn't help either.
Like I said, the beer was alright.

29 Nov 2009 19:38

The Kings Arms, Oxford

Huge, multi roomed pub but very busy so a good atmosphere despite of the size. Youngs beers plus Tribute and the guest was Bath Ales Gem which ain't great when you come up from Bristol for the day. Still , it was served in perfect condition. The service was faultless, friendly and helpful.

29 Nov 2009 19:31

The White Horse, Oxford

Yes, very good indeed. The sort of pub that 'wraps itself around you' as my old Dad would say. We were lucky to get a seat on a busy Sat afternoon. The bar staff were really friendly and welcoming. The Prospect from the new? Shotover Brewery was faultless and I wish I had time to stay for a few more. Reminded me of the Green Tree in Bath, small and full of character.

29 Nov 2009 19:27

The Mad Bishop and Bear, Paddington

Fullers pubs so you get the full range plus Tribute. The latter was in good nick although the pub itself lacks character - and what is it with this place and bloody fruit machines - loads of em scattered around the place. Good if you're waiting for a train back to Brissle as I indeed was, otherwise go somewhere with a bit more atmosphere I would say.

11 Nov 2009 19:32

The Crown, Soho

Really dark and gloomy out back, front bar better. 4 ales on and the Wolvers from Newmans was in fine fettle (others were Landlord, London Pride and one other guest). Staff seemed friendly enough and service. Punters were a strange mix of tourists, East End 'barra boys', and Sloany plummy types. Interesting place for people watching.

11 Nov 2009 19:28

The Old Crown, Kelston

Charming Butcombe pub, attractive old building with a cosy interior and a pleasant atmosphere inside with a mix of clientele (ie diners and drinkers). 4 ales on tap - Butcombe Gold and bitter, London Pride and... another which escapes me. The - becoming ubiquitous but rarely served how it should be - Butcombe bitter was in top class 10/10 condition and was a reminder of what a good beer it is when served in good nick. Mrs D wants to comment on the fact that the bar staff were friendly and polite. Food was also very good. One to return to.

29 Oct 2009 18:57

The Bishops Tavern, Bristol

A soulless cavernous place - decor from Pubs R Us - with usual suspects ales on offer - G King, Abbot, Speckled Hen. The G King IPA served flat and far too cold. A place in need of a toilet cleaning rota as the gents had unflushed kazi's with evidence of unmissed targets covering the floor. And the place was nearly empty. A pub for people who don't like pubs. A Wetherspoons without the atmosphere. Appalling.

12 Oct 2009 18:36

The Robin Hood's Retreat, Bishopston

Slight return to form with ales from Jennings and (I think) Exe Valley alongside usual suspects such as Doom Bar. Service much better and ale in top notch condition.

12 Oct 2009 18:26

The Barley Mow, Bristol

A good pub just got better - now serving a guest ale and both this and the service was excellent.

11 Sep 2009 17:36

The King William, Bristol

Yes, as previously noted you might, and I mean just might, expect the King William Ale House as is its full title proudly displayed outside, to have some of them on sell. Ever feel like you're being cheated? I consulted the bar girl and was informed that only keg beers available. She said they used to sell them (real ales) but not any more. A pity as it is an attractive looking pub inside. Need a decent LL with a passion for the amber, and maybe things could change for the place.

7 Sep 2009 20:18

Knights Templar, Bristol

This place getting quite comical - ratio of bar staff to punters getting ever wider. The staff that are are supposed to be serving seem content to keep themselves busy by faffing around at the end of the bar polishing glasses and doing anything except serve the increasingly frustrated throng out front. Was eventually served with something approaching disdain by the stroppy bar girl who must have been off sick when Spoons did the customer service training- and why do spoons staff always ask you if that's all you want when you ask for a pint?
For the record - the beer was great. Davenports from Birmingham and could not be faulted. However, this doesn't atone for the appalling service Mr Knights Templar manager, but at least it reminded me of why I was there in the first place

2 Sep 2009 18:36

The Commercial Rooms, Bristol

Been in a couple of times recently I've found the ale to be in excellent nick. They've had some interesting ones on too, the Vale Ale from Pewsey was simply sublime yesterday as was the Titanic Iceberg. Nothing special about the pub itself - a cavernous hall lacking in atmosphere, but very impressed with the beer.

30 Aug 2009 16:37

The Old Duke, Bristol

A frustrating place. Yes, it is famous - rightly so - for it's jazz and live music, but every time I'm there the ale always seems mediocre in quality just about not takebackable - I reckon the pipes haven't been cleaned since about 1974 probably. The bar staff have attitude - not of the right kind - and the service is erratic making you that they have done you a great favour in serving you... thank you very much and here's my money. Finally, as the place is usually packed perhaps they could invest in some cleaning products for the WC's which reek so badly the affect can be felt throughout the right side of the pub.

30 Aug 2009 16:31

The Jolly Sailor, Saltford

Took a detour off the cycle path again yesterday and nothing's changed. The pub will always be busy due to its attractive location which unfortunately seems to mean the owners don't need to be bothered with such trivialities such as providing decent service and decent beer. Yes, there were four ales on, but the two tried were tired and just about not take backable in quality. Just lazy. Will give it another six months and hope for an improvement.

15 Aug 2009 08:34

St Georges Hall, Redfield

The ale is as good and as interesting as it has ever been in here with yesterday having offerings from Phoenix and Arundel breweries. Served with a grunt by the miserable ruddy barman which is unusual as usually service is pretty good in here and better than in a lot of other Spoons. Never mind, it was an excellent pint and worth looking in on if you're in the area.

12 Aug 2009 16:06

The Bull's Head Hotel, Brecon

Not too much to gripe about here - a good opportunity to try Evans and Evans ales, which seemed in excellent nick. Bar woman very friendly and are keen on pets with a budgie perched at the bar, and two dogs running around the gaff. Ah yes, the toilets stank, that would be my only complaint. And I do mean stank.

12 Aug 2009 15:54

The Boars Head, Brecon

Kept to the front bar - 5 ales from Breconshire and ones had in excellent condition as you might expect from a brewery tap for the, er, brewery. Loud locals who were effing and blinding at the bar which detracted a bit. LL and staff very friendly and seemed passionate about the ale - shame they didn't consider asking the yobs to keep the ruddy language down.

12 Aug 2009 15:48

The Railway Inn, Yatton

Looked like half the set of Twin Peaks were in last Sat night. Only Butcombe bitter on, despite signs outside for Otter. Passable - just. The silence only punctuated by out of place offerings on the juke box such as Haircut 100. Very bright lighting and odd, eccentric bar woman.

12 Aug 2009 15:41

The Old Fish Market, Bristol

Contrary to some other opinions, I thought the Thai food was excellent and really good value, but as this is beer in the evening, I shall move on to that! Fullers pub so you get London Pride, Discovery and ESB. They seem to have Butcombe bitter on as a permanent alternative to the Fuller range and the 'guest' was Seafarers from Gales, but as Gales was bought out by Fullers it is highly debatable whether you could count it as such. The latter was served in excellent condition and a good place to watch the Ashes on the big screen this summer. I agree with Quinno in that it's not exactly a summer pub however and is fairly dark and gloomy inside - good for sun dodgers I guess

12 Jul 2009 17:06

The Guide Dog, Bevois Valley

I agree that this is indeed a superb pub, all about the beer and the beer alone, from the old GBG's dating back to the 90's to the ale descriptions chalked up on the board and leaflets and other beer related bits and pieces dotted around the place. Eight ales on with the TEA (from Hogs Back) simply sublime at 2.20 per pint. Beers from micro breweries were on such as Flowerpots in Cheriton and Bowmans, alongside ones from Fullers, Gale and Hop Back. Highly impressive and looking forward to the next visit.

10 Jul 2009 22:30

The Cricketers, Southampton

Had the ambience of a student pub but one that happens to sell real ales - not that anyone else seemed to be drinking 'em! Three on on our visit - Solar Power from Isle of Purbeck brewery and Spire Ale from Stonehenge plus one from Wadworth, the former two were both served in perfect nick. Not far from the superb Guide Dog up the road and worth a look. Er, as an aside, didn't seem to be anything cricket related going on in this pub, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your viewpoint of the beautiful game.

10 Jul 2009 22:19

The Boars Head, Aust

Popped in on a very quiet week day afternoon. Strange service from the bar women who poured half of my pint and then walked off to do something else. Barman had to come over to ask what had happened and then finished pouring the pint which was then about two inches from the top of the glass and was fairly ungracious when I asked for a top up. Three ales on - Pedigree, Ringwood Best and one from Wychwood. Although good value at 2.50 per pint, the Ringwood was a little tired - I suspect that it had been sitting in the pipes for too long - please clear them out before serving your customers! Pub has a very attractive interior, all low ceilings and beams and there is a large garden with a sheltered area. Hope for better quality ale and better service next time

9 Jul 2009 20:46

The Cornubia, Bristol

bs8 drinker - surely everyone has the right to their opinion regardless of their position - it's called democracy. Whether you agree with it or not is another matter - but the guy has the right to say it. Personally, I find appalling spelling lazy and shoddy and choosing to type in BLOCK CAPITALS aggressive but that's just my opinion and personal foible. No offence.

8 Jul 2009 13:21

Beeses Riverside Bar, Bristol

Interesting little place - used to be known for its cream teas, but now also serving real ale straight from the cask. Only one on when we were there - GWB's Bees Knees but in good condition and others lined up were the superb Butts Barbus Barbus, and Butcombe. Really nice garden by the river (as the name suggests!), and if walking here they will bring you over from the other side of the river via their own ferry - a charming way to arrive for a few ales.. Worth seeking out. They also have a beer festival sometime in August.

6 Jul 2009 15:03

Knights Templar, Bristol

Been back a couple of times since last review - the first I just gave up after seeing how packed the place was and with only three stressed out bar staff serving and with lots of frustrated punters queued at the bar. Went back this Sunday out of convenience more than anything else and the same story - beer choice was as uninspiring at W'spoons staffing policy - the Arbor Ales Brigstow was borderline take back in quality and Gem was as Gem is, nice enough but nothing to get excited about and not great quality either. Mmmmm.

6 Jul 2009 14:57

The Crown and Trumpet Inn, Broadway

Crikey oh riley! I thought I'd died and gone to beer heaven. Five real ales - 2 from the Stroud brewery which I have never come across before and both were gorgeous. They also had one brewed for them from Stanway brewery which also scored a 10/10. The staff were simply first class - informative and couldn't do enough for you. This is a pub that takes it's real ale seriously that also happens to sell excellent food - the haddock and chips was fresh and delicious. The landlord seems a top bloke who knows his beer. If only more pubs were like this. A faultless 10 out of 10.

2 Jul 2009 14:58

The Barley Mow, Bristol

For my money, one of the best boozers in Bristol, what pubs should and used to be about - quality beer in basic, comfortable surroundings. Really attractive ambience about the place, always a friendly welcome, and I have to say I totally disagree with AEM about his perhaps deliberately controversial statement about Bristol Beer Factory beers. On recent visits four BBF beers available, now including Bristol Stout which was very drinkable indeed. The only way to improve the place would be to install a couple more hand pumps and put on a couple of guest ales.

25 Jun 2009 22:27

The Cornubia, Bristol

It's a pity that you cannot find the wide variety of different ales that you used to in the Cornubia - most of the Hidden beers I've tried have been pretty unremarkable. I think there is still one guest ale at most times (please correct me if wrong), but I have to say that this was served far too warm today, and especially disappointing coming from a pub well known for its CAMRA associations.

25 Jun 2009 22:16

The Wheatsheaf, Thornbury

Really impressed - 4 ales on tap, with Tribute very quaffable. Also tried the huge sarnies which were really good value. Very popular - the place was packed on Sat lunchtime. Also a large garden out the back with lots of rabbits and what I think were guinea pigs. Friendly barman.

18 Jun 2009 21:46

Grain Barge, Bristol

I really like coming here for the BBF ales and of course the views over the harbour but I am a bit bemused by good reports of customer service as I think that that is the one thing that lets this place down. The staff often seem bloody miserable and put out by having to serve you - don't think I could say we've ever had a 'friendly' welcome in about 5 or 6 visits.

18 Jun 2009 21:36

The Orchard Inn, Bristol

I agree that this place isn't really worth coming out of your way for unless it's cider your after. 2 ales on, with the Otter in tip top condition. Seemed friendly enough to us non-locals. Just OK really.

18 Jun 2009 21:26

The Seven Stars, Winsley

I'm afraid that this feels less of a pub and more of a restaurant. There are about three or four tables for drinkers, and the rest are set for diners, most with reserved notices. The two beers on were an uninspiring Doom Bar and Spa but I can say that both were in excellent condition. Nowhere else to eat in the area so tried food which was just OK and not as exciting as the blurb above would have you believe. A major disappointment. (on the plus side, if it's a nice day there are ample tables and chairs outside to DRINK - when we were there there was a group of other people also saying why don't they just call this place a restaurant and be done with it)

15 Jun 2009 09:19

George Inn, Bathampton

Stopped by on a walk to Bradford On Avon and as it was a very hot day got a couple of pints of iced lemonade for refreshment.... the cost of this pleasure? That's 6.20 please? said the friendly barman. WHAT? 6 bloody 20? Mrs Dandillus nearly choked on her pickled egg.

15 Jun 2009 09:09

The Red Cow Inn, Pontsticill

Attractive looking pub, serves 3 real ales the Wye Valley bitter being very quaffable. Got a bit stared at by the locals when arriving but it seems you have to expect that if you are off the beaten track in Wales. Landlord seemed initially indifferent to our presence and went on serving his mates, but on the second night seemed a lot more friendly and service was better. The place was packed probably due to it being the only half decent boozer in the surrounding vicinity. (don't bother with the dire Butchers Arms up the road). Not bad but not great either.

25 May 2009 15:17

The Bank, Bristol

Four ales including ones from RCH, Great Western and Celt when we were there. Friendly enough, quite young and studenty clientele. Authentic looking wooden interior and a bit of Bowie on in the background which cheered up this grumpy old geezer. Recommended and will be back for a second visit.

4 May 2009 14:36

The Spooner's Bar, Porthmadog

The positives - six ales, mostly from local microbrewies, and all we tried were in excellent condition. The landlord was friendly unlike some of the staff who gave what seemed to be the traditional North Welsh welcome of indifference and slight hostility (maybe it is my Englishness that's the problem). Got a bit stared at by the locals but the beer here was simply excellent and worth coming here for. If steam trains and other rail paraphernalia interest you than this place would be very exciting with lots old bits and pieces dotted around the place.

1 May 2009 09:27

Station Inn, Porthmadog

Second of G Beer Guide 2009 entries for Porthmadog. Located inside the main rail station, this place had two ales on, one from local Purple Moose Brewery and served in perfect condition. Very stilted atmosphere inside, but is was early afternoon and very quiet. Pleasant service from bar woman. Decor consists of old trophies, pool table in corner and the toilets were acceptable.

1 May 2009 09:18

The Robin Hood's Retreat, Bishopston

What happened to all the interesting ales? Last Sat night saw Ruddles County, Butcombe Best and Hobgoblin and some Wickwar rubbish. The barmaid could barely drag herself to serve us. A huge contrast to previous visit, and not worth getting off the bus for.

20 Apr 2009 20:59

The Crown Inn, Keynsham

One room pub, very quiet on our visit. Only one ale - from Moles, but in perfect nick. Place felt very 1970's, from the swirling carpet for the LL's facial hair. Probably not one to go out of the way for, but if you're waiting for the bus back to Bristol then it is not ungoinginable.

13 Apr 2009 10:04

The Lock Keeper, Keynsham

A pub that's trying to be a bit, er, 'upmarket' but have to say that we got a very friendly welcome from staff. All Youngs beers apart from Deuchars which was in good condition. Lovely setting with huge garden out back, so even if busy can get away from the crowds.

13 Apr 2009 09:52

Old Stillage, Redfield

If the previous post is correct, then it's a pity but not unexpected I hope that Arbor Ales find suitable premises as an outlet for their fine ales, and when they do I will be visiting again. It is a sad fact that pubs in the Redfield / St George areas leave a lot (and that's A LOT) to be desired, and I thought that on our last visit, Arbor were going to struggle to turn this one around. Give the scum their pub back and leave em to their own devices (and lager), and I look forward to a decent pint with you folks another time.

13 Apr 2009 09:44

Old Stillage, Redfield

I'm afraid AEM has got this about right. We have been back a few times now, and although the new owners seem genuinely decent people, it looks like unless they make some serious changes, the place will remain uncomfortable to visit if you are seen as an 'outsider'. I mean, why continue to show football on the big screen when it attracts such psycho's as were there a few weeks ago. (the nutter who was shouting and screaming at the TV for a start and being hostile to the LL, going on about how it is a local pub for local people). I've never run a pub so don't know how you go about getting rid of the locals you don't want coming anymore. When I asked for ale at the bar, it felt like the Bill Hicks sketch when he's asked 'what are you reading FOR?' - generally unpleasant locals, and the mrs is scared to go to the bar on her own. Enough said.

1 Apr 2009 15:54

The Kellaway Arms, Horfield

Has been reopened yet again since the last post on here. Very friendly welcome form the staff - the pub now split into two distinct area: one for drinkers, the other for diners. The best thing about it is the great choice of beers: Cotleigh 25, Wye Valley HPA, Cheddar Potholer, Hook Norton Best, Spitfire, and one from Wickwar. The ones we tried were in tip top condition and not too pricey - also had a small 'try before you buy' glass beside the pumps which was a nice touch. Food also reasonably priced and the Sunday lunch was excellent. Pub tastefully refurbished - open fires and comfy seating. All in all, really impressed and will be back.

23 Mar 2009 08:40

Old Stillage, Redfield

So far so good - two perfect pints of Oyster Stout and Beech Blonde were had and excellent service by friendly barman. Landlord also hopes to have guest ales on in future. Quite early in the evening so not sure how it is for local undesirables later on. Hope this pub is a success as it is just what the area needs. Will be interesting to see how it goes for them but I wish them well and will certainly be dropping in.

10 Mar 2009 19:23

The Ostrich, Bristol

What a dull place. Pedigree and (very average) Brains SA on tap, people sat around not talking to each other and landlady more interested in stuffing her Sunday roast than serving her customers. Miserable.

8 Mar 2009 21:58

Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster

Hallelujah! Not a laptop or a bawling "Charlie" or "Jemima" in sight. Felt like a proper boozer where people come to DRINK and CONVERSE. Something of a relief after previous pubs on the Dandillus' Southville excursion. Full of old chaps drinking ale, and had gorgeous pints of Arbor Ales Oyster Stout and Golden Hare (although GH was a little bit lageresque to my likng). Service was excellent with bar maid asking if we wanted to try before buying (always a nice touch)

8 Mar 2009 21:54

The Spotted Cow, Bedminster

Another refurbished Bedminster / Southville boozer catering to the 'locals' who moved here after realising they couldn't afford to live in Clifton and therefore helped to inflate the house prices in the area by ooh about 6000% since 1993. Not dissimilar in character to the Hen and Chicken down the road. 3 ales including Butcombe Gold and Gem, and Gem in excellent nick. Less kids than were in other pubs, the place quite tastefully done out with a wood burner adding a pleasant touch. Also the garden looked nice but it was chucking it down so couldn't investigate further.

8 Mar 2009 21:45

The Hen and Chicken, Bedminster

Something of a relief after escaping the Tobacco Factory's creche. ( still one or two many screaming kids though - to quote the barman "it's always like this around here"). 4 ales on, the Otter was in fine fettle, also Hook Norton and 6X. A bit lacking in character - another place on the band wagon of "local produce" food etc. At least they are making an effort to serve some decent ales which makes it worth a return visit.

8 Mar 2009 21:09

Tobacco Factory, Southville

This was just horrendous - screaming kids running ragged whilst Mums sat sipping glasses of red wine and ignoring said offspring. I saw two blokes get up and move to a less kindergarten like area of the place after parents ignored the fact that their bloody sprogs were annoying them and threatening to knock over their beer. Absolutely full of middle class toss pots who think that the best way to entertain their children on a Sunday afternoon is to take em to the pub and let them sit and watch them read the Observer. Will not be back. For the record, I used to come here a few years ago when it first opened and was the first outlet for Bristol Beer Factory beers. It used to be OK. It isn't now.

8 Mar 2009 20:14

Knights Templar, Bristol

Bright W'Spoon, dare I say it, even a bit different in atmosphere to all the other Spoons that abound. Not particularly better, just different. Serving (I think) eight ales. Disappointingly, the Wickwar Severn Bore was dull and tasteless but not overly cold as per a lot of criticism their ales have received previously (what is it with Wickwar beers- am I just being served them in less than decent nick or are they always this bland?) Not as rough as most Spoons, with more office workers and gentle grey haired CAMRA types than the rabid 4 pints of (99p) beer before breakfast punters that you get in the Redfield / Bedminster versions.

7 Mar 2009 13:02

Off The Rails, Weston Super Mare

Mmm - one of the more bizarre places. Very local, with one side of the place a cafe, and selling newspapers and rolls, and the other a bar. Eyed with suspicion by who I think was the LL and the local pond life. BUT, it was an excellent pint of RCH IPA and also serving 2 Quercas beers which I haven't come across before. Claustrophobic and felt relieved to leave.

The Plough Inn, Taunton

The front bar was bright and airy. Only two ales on at lunchtime - Cotleigh Harrier and Exmoor Gold, and the Cotleigh in good nick, served straight from the cask. Unusually shaped pub with entrance at the end of the alleyway. Barman friendly enough and I would definitely return again when passing through.

7 Mar 2009 12:41

The Old Green Tree, Bath

One of my all time favourites. Been coming here on and off for 5-6 years and have never had a bad pint. They seemed to have increased how many ales they serve - I think 5 now on tap. Guaranteed a gorgeous pint of Pitchfork in lovely surroundings. Landlord has always been very friendly. Yes, it can get busy, but if you get a seat in the lounge this can be a very difficult place to leave.

2 Mar 2009 20:58

The Royal Oak, Bath

Made a special effort to visit this place and the verdict? On the plus side, there is a good choice of ales. Many of these were pretty strong though, out of ten on offer 6 were 5.5% +, with three over 6.5% - pretty unusual. Not many people in the place, apart from what looked like what someone on this site would refer to as 'beer tickers'. Soundtrack to the Wicker Man in the background and the barman looked fairly well oiled. Bloody strange place all in all, and the toilets were pretty damned awful. May come back, but I wouldn't go out of my way again.

2 Mar 2009 20:52

The Hop Pole, Bath

It's a Bath Ales pub so what do you get? Gem, Spa, Barnstormer, Golden Hare...........blah blah etc. Nice pub, boring ale choice but served in good condition.

2 Mar 2009 20:43

The Raven, Bath

Looked like 5 ales on, not 9-10 as mentioned by mrdruse. Only tried the Yeovil Glory which was in excellent condition. Somewhat haughty bar staff and full of people who probably like rugby. We would go back though purely on good ale quality.

2 Mar 2009 20:41

The Robin Hood's Retreat, Bishopston

Excellent selection of ales - including from the newish Great Western Brewery, RCH, Skinners and the more common Otter. The ones we tried were in excellent condition. Barman friendly. Definitely one to return to.

28 Feb 2009 09:50

The Stag & Hounds, Bristol

Pretty much as the previous poster has said - Otter and Gem on tap and the Otter was in tip top condition. Leather seats and wood, huge screen showing the rugby. Agree about the dreadful music, but at least not offensively loud. Also selling pie minister pies for the diet conscious.

28 Feb 2009 09:44

The White Lion, Bristol

I have now had a couple of return journeys to the White Lion (mainly out of convenience of it's location but also in the hope of decent beer). The last visit this Sunday saw really well below average ales - only just not returnable. It seems strange that this Wickwar outlet lets the LL serve it's beer in such rubbish condition - what's going on there? The locals that seemed as though they had been in the pub all day were understandably drunk, the barman seemed intrigued that someone was actually interested in the quality of the beer they were serving, and we will not be returning to this place any time soon.

22 Feb 2009 19:05

The Jolly Sailor, Saltford

Been in a couple of times recently and the positives of the location and pleasant interior are offset by the averageness of the ale. Only Butcombe Best and one other which could only could be described as passable when quaffed. Shame.

21 Feb 2009 15:30

The Bunch of Grapes, Bradford on Avon

Mmm, nice enough pub, lots of nooks and crannies and an open fire. Could be better if they expanded their ale range, only boring Youngs and a guest (Tribute) which was in fairly good nick. I urge any visitors to BOA to walk up the hill to The Castle which I quite like.

21 Feb 2009 15:26

Dandy Lion, Bradford on Avon

All Wadworths beers - yawn - but the ones we tried were at least in good condition. Really lacking in any kind of atmosphere, felt like sitting in a museum. Barwoman friendly though and helped us with directions to the next pub!

21 Feb 2009 15:22

The Castle, Bradford on Avon

THIS PUB IS NOT CLOSED! This is a wonderful pub, serving five or six real ales from local breweries - including Three Castles, Keystone and their own Flatcappers (I think also brewed by Three Castles). The ones we tried were all in perfect nick. The owners and staff friendly and service was good. Toilets best I've seen in a pub, with even a boot splash guard....The decor is tasteful, big open fire and we found it difficult to leave. Faultless. 10/10

7 Feb 2009 12:27

The Fire Engine, Redfield

Returned recently and had a pint if Gem in excellent condition and the place seemed to have calmed down a bit riff raff wise. Rejoice!

6 Feb 2009 10:06

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol

Not been in The Volly for a while so thought give it a go. Impressive range of ales including Cotswold Spring Brewery, Moors and Cotleigh. Very busy with office staff going in after work, terrible piped RnB coming through the speakers, not too loud, but just doesn't fit with the place. Still, well worth a visit and beer served in good condition.

31 Jan 2009 20:27

The Seven Stars, Bristol

A return visit this weekend saw a vast array of interesting beers from different breweries. The ones we tried were in perfect nick and a mention must go to MacOtter which was simply delicious. This was our third visit in recent weeks - it is a fantastic pub run by lovely people who care about their customers and YOU have a responsibility to visit soon! Cheers!

18 Jan 2009 19:09

The Bridge Inn, Bristol

Eccentric little place this - don't know if they have stopped the guest beers but only Bath Ales on when we were there however, the ones we tried were in excellent condition) Nice chap serving at the bar who Mrs Dandillus got chatting to. Possibly the only pub where you would see an old Groundhogs LP used as decoration.

18 Jan 2009 19:04

The Hare On The Hill, Bristol

Under new ownership and seems to be doing well. 3 Bath Ales on, and what I assumed to be the guest beer - Greene King IPA (I kid you not!). Toilets have been done up and spotless, seats refurbished and even a new, sign on the door. Landlord and landlady very friendly, and we will be returning. (hopefully there will be a more adventurous GBeer next time!)

18 Jan 2009 12:39

The Merchants Arms, Hotwells

I have to agree with alot of other posts on here in that the Festivity is. 1. A lovely pint of ale, and 2. served in top notch condition (at least it was on this visit). - a pity that my companion's guest beer was flat and insipid. Smallish pub, a bit claustrophobic and blokey - where do the fairer sex drink in Hotwells? - but will pop in again when in the area

12 Jan 2009 16:02

The Adam and Eve, Bristol

I have really enjoyed coming to this pub for a decent pint of Pitchfork , but what is it with the recent tendancy to reserve tables? There were people stood at the bar drinking while tables around us were empty apart form the reserved signs. Message to LL - do you want to alienate passing customers and other punters who just want to DRINK? If this happens on next visit will probably start giving this one a miss...

12 Jan 2009 13:12

The Nova Scotia, Bristol

Caught the last ferry here on a FREEZING Jan eve - Definitley felt more 'locals only' than usual although not unfriendly. Pint of Everards Tiger was OK, but onlly just. Probably about 98% males with most of em interested in the cloudy rough stuff.

12 Jan 2009 13:05

The Watershed Cafe Bar, Bristol

Someone should tell Arbor Ales that although the Watershed seems to have a policy of serving their beers, unfortunately they are not serving them in good condition or at least not on our visit. First pint was cloudy and flat. (Brigstow). Barman reluctantly agreed it probably shouldn't be served like that (cheers!), changed it for Oyster Stout which was pretty flat and lifeless and I'm sure not how the good brewers intended. They carried on serving the dodgy beer as well, for goodness sake.

31 Dec 2008 13:57

The Old Lock and Weir, Hanham Mills

Visited on Boxing Day and although there was a strangely rough atmosphere about the place, had a most delicious pint of Otter Ale while sitting out by the river on a crisp winter's day. Four ales on tap in total including Gem (arrgh, the new Courage Best), Wadworths 6X and I think Hobgoblin.

29 Dec 2008 15:33

The Portcullis Inn, Bristol

In regard to the responses from my previous post, well I do understand the differences between a dry sense of humour and having a bit of banter with your customers, to the service and demeanour of said landlord on my last visit (and mmm, isn't it "interesting" that 'shooter mcgavin' and 'barbudette' have only just registered on this site and have only left positive comments for this pub - surely not what I'm suspecting?) My companions also found it embarrassing, and no sir you were not joking nor was there a smile on your face. I thoroughly appreciate Mr Dawkins' pubs and enjoy visiting to try the ales. However, he does not, unfortunately, seem to have a sound choice when seeking people to run 'em who seem to be sarcastic, know it alls. and make you feel as though they are doing you a favour by serving you.(and I refer people to other comments for The Victoria and the Miners Arms on this site), A pity.

29 Dec 2008 15:24

The Port Of Call, Clifton

Really friendly barman - excellent customer service, and really improved from previous visits. There are usually more than the four ales that were on last night but the pint quaffed of Cornish Coaster could not be improved upon, really nice pickled eggs as well. Will return again soon.

24 Dec 2008 19:41

Grain Barge, Bristol

Grain Barge - location great, full range of Bristol Beer Factory beers available blah blah blah. Recommended to colleagues but when got there most of the tables were reserved for office Xmas parties, and were told to vacate our table and move somewhere else. This is NO WAY to treat your paying customers - and I'm sure the people I persuaded to come along were not impressed as we made our way down to the 'hold'. Barman said they only do this at Xmas and did I want to speak to the manager. What a let down.

20 Dec 2008 17:22

The Eldon House, Bristol

Similar to other comments here, the Eldon seems strangely sterile now compared to previous incarnations. Not a disaster, and decent pint of Gem was had, but just nothing spectacular either. Unmemorable.

20 Dec 2008 17:05

The Robin Hood, Bristol

Not bad - five ales, Wadworths and guests, excellent pint of Abbey Ales Twelfth Night although the Blindhouse from Box Steam was lifeless. Friendly atmosphere and staff and generous bowl of chips for a quid fifty. Definitely worth a look.

20 Dec 2008 17:00

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

After being down in the doldrums for a few years, the Bag O Nails seems to be back where it was circa 2004/5, ie, reliable place to try a few unusual beers. The Gents don't smell as bad as they used to. Alas, not the sort of place I can convince my 2 for 1 cocktail colleagues to pay a visit to this Friday after the Xmas meal. On the last two visits the ale has been in top notch condition, and they have a small glass of beer by the pump so they don't have to answer questions like 'do you have any light beers?' clever or lazy, you decide.

16 Dec 2008 10:49

The Portcullis Inn, Bristol

Ok, there are a lot of good things about this pub, the interesting range of well kept real ales being already well documented. Beer festival also on this weekend with wide range of interesting beverages from near and far. HOWEVER, I am afraid to say not made welcome by landlord upon arrival who seemed highly put out at having to serve us. The chap later went on to shout out to his punters 'do they want a job' and moaning about having to work '80 hours a week', while people looked on embarrassedly. I thought punters go into pubs to have a pint, prop up the bar and complain about their lot, not the other way round. Very, very poor idea of not only how to treat your customers, but how to generally behave in public. A shame.
9 for the beer, 0 for the service

14 Dec 2008 15:12

The White Lion, Bristol

City centre location and ideal for punters seeking out Wickwar beers - I've always been a bit underwhelmed by them myself. Very busy for a Sat lunchtime, and lots of promotion for Wickwar's new ale 'Banker's Draft', for which I was served a very flat version - bit strange that. Mrs Dandillus' pint of Coopers was much fresher as she was keen on telling me (and cheap at 2). I would say an above average place and, of course, better than your Slug and lettuce type places which abound in City Centres, I wouldn't get on a bus to go there though.

14 Dec 2008 14:40

The Seven Stars, Bristol

Popped in Sat lunchtime for brief respite from Xmas shopping and met with eight real ales; some usual suspects (Bath Ales etc) but also beers from further afield. Bit quiet in terms of other punters but nice relaxing pub to enjoy what was a tip top quality ale. Recommended.

14 Dec 2008 14:26

The George and Dragon, Redfield

Oops, the review below is meant for St Georges Hall pub in Redfield, not the George and Dragon - never been in this place

1 Dec 2008 19:09

St Georges Hall, Redfield

In the desert of decent, and indeed unthreatening, watering holes in the St George/Redfield areas, here is somewhere that serves a wide range (I think eight) ales, with some from unusual sources and usually in pretty good condition. Sure, it is a typical Wetherspoons and nothing special in that but good to have somewhere reliable to drink in the area. Cheap W'Spoon prices too.

30 Nov 2008 20:54

The Barley Mow, Bristol

Tastefully redecorated and refurbished, good atmosphere and the ale was excellent. All in all, a good job but how about Bristol Beer Factory outlets having a policy on a guest beer or two?

30 Nov 2008 17:06

The George and Dragon, Redfield

30 Nov 2008 17:02

The Fire Engine, Redfield

Recently moved to the area and in desperately hoping to find a decent local, gave this place a go. Intimidating mixture of loud sweary youngsters and other unsavouries. Bar staff unfriendly, beer (Bombardier) was average, pub plasticky and fake. A faintly depressing place, all in all. After this and the Pied Horse, considering a move back to Cotham

30 Nov 2008 16:47

The Pied Horse, Bristol

Popped in on a Saturday afternoon and my ears were met with banging European techno beat; there was a couple of chavs snogging at the bar and barmaid who looked at us wondering what we were doing there. Average pint of Archers drunk quickly as we edged towards the door. This pub was in the 2007 Good Beer Guide but not in 2008. I understand why.

30 Nov 2008 16:36

The Hope and Anchor, Bristol

Just got back from pub crawl in London and beer in this place is more expensive than in Westminster. A pocket clenching 3.30 for a pint of Landlord? At least the beers are kept in good condition for the price. Seemed to be full of people there for the food and emptied out considerably after 9ish, pleasant atmosphere though. In short, goodish pub with tasty ales and the cash point is just at the top of the road

30 Nov 2008 16:31

The Speaker, Westminster

Didn't really live up to the entry in the Good Beer Guide - somewhat lacking in atmosphere - however, two interesting guest beers from Microbreweries and both in good condition. Barmaid not friendly and Mrs said the women's toilet filthy. Not worth going out of your way for but if in the area .....

30 Nov 2008 16:22

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Sought out to try St Peter's ales and wasn't disappointed. Lovely pint of Organic ale, served by friendly barman - good luck when trying to get a seat, but worth coming for the beer alone.
