The Harp, Covent Garden

Nominated CAMRA West London Pub of the Year 2010.
Surely Binnie and her girls have got to win this; particularly after being abused on BITE by the Top 40, self promoting Cask & Kitchen management.
No contest; the Crooked Cask & Kitchen, against the honest, hardworking Harp.

QUOTE (SICK_OF_THE_LIES @ Mar 19 2010, 12:42 AM)
THE RECENT PROBLEM BETWEEN THE MITRE/HARP/CASK WAS THOUGHT TO HAVE ENDED WITH THE REMOVAL OF THE OFFENDING POSTS FROM THE THREE PAGES HOWEVER THEY DO NOT SEEM TO WANT TO STOP THE MATTER.

ONE OFFENDING POST BY PRINCE MONOLULU HAS BEEN LEFT ON THE CASK PAGE WHILE HIS POSTS ON HARP AND MITRE BEEN REMOVED.

NEW POSTS BY THE 'ONEANDONLY1' + 'HARRYHOSPUR' + 'LIONELRICHTEA' HAVE ALL CONTINUED THE PERSONAL ABUSED AIMED AT THIS PUB.

IT REALLY IS WRONG THAT DRINKERS OF ONE SET OF PUBS CAN TRASH ANOTHER PUB FOR NO GOOD REASON AND WITHOUT JUSTIFICATION.

LETS GET THESE POSTS REMOVED AND END THE SLANDER AND GAMES.
I think you should honestly cool it.
Yet again, you have signed on under another name, and still pretend that you are innocent and hard done by. You've been puffing your pub's position on the top 40 for months now. Why? It's a good enough pub on it's own merits. Be happy and sit back and wait for honest rating by drinkers to the Cask & Kitchen.
And why continue to fool yourself that you weren't mr_ange who praised your pub last week under your own listing, but was offensive to the Harp and Ye Olde Mitre last week. Now your attacking the Ship at Wandsworth, and The Lord Clyde. And now attacking the Mitre once more. You have seriously lost it in Pimlico.

I think gaypostman and stevieshears are one and the same; possibly Cask & Kitchen management or staff having a hissie fit at popular pubs in the top 40 competition? They've tried The Harp, and Ye Olde Mitre, and The Lord Clyde. Which pub are they going for next? This is certainly a pop at the Ship.

Wheatsheaf, Crowborough

Jolly nice to see the Wheatsheaf, Crowborough has rocketed to the top from no where (okay, East Sussex).
Amazing!!!!
Still makes a welcome change to the stale, old false, self awarding and positioning of the Cask & Kitchen at Pimlico.
I suppose the landlord and staff there will have to burn the midnight oil on the old steam computer praising their plastic Pimlico palace to beat the Wheatsheaf at the top 40 game.
Anyone for a drink at the Harp?

The St Brides Tavern, Blackfriars

Me doth think that ye Suffolkfarmboy is a yokel employed at the Punch?
He must be cheap and backward, far cheaper and sillier an an Easten European to employ at that drinkers dreg hole.
Away back to your fields of Suffolk fool. You could'nt possibly judge a great and well run bar as the St.Bride's tavern over the Punch.

The Punch Tavern, Fleet Street

Suffolkfarmboy! Get a life? Your obviously in the employ of the Punch; you must have left the Flask in Highgate recently?
Try to grow some hair on your chin before telling seasoned men and drinkers that the Punch is a great pub? It isn't. It was once a great one, remarkable and dearly loved.
It is a ruin now, and no longer fit for purpose. People make slums and made management ruin pubs.
The beer is foul, badly served and over priced.
The food and presentation tat.
What hold has the owner over you to get you to sprought such rubbish? Did he offer you a bag of sweets, an XBox game or tickets to the cinema?
Away and grow up; your to young to judge beer.

The Wheatsheaf, Vauxhall

Expensive for what it is,full of passing punters from the hotel across the road.
Fulse leather armchair in front of pub a mess and needed straigtening up and floor needed a sweep when I was in. Not really sold on this place, best jump a bus or cab and find a pub with friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

The White Hart, Kennington

A great pub for a very great steak; well cooked and served and priced.
(And a safer bet to the nearby curry houses, passing goat off as lamb). Or Italian Pizza restaurant, were you can watch the guy making the pizza, blow his nose, and carry on without washing his hands! And your worried about swine flu?
Ale isn't up to much in the White Hart, but Cider and Lager are good.
Big old,pleasant,comfortable pub.

15 Aug 2009 09:35

The Prince of Wales, Kennington

Always a pure pub of pleasurable drinking.

15 Aug 2009 09:24

The White Bear, Kennington

Fascinating, massive, typical irish style "Paddy" pub for the labouring gangs. Could well be minting it, if taken over and done up. A massive pub, in a Georgian terrace that took a fair few bob before the war saw the bombing and loss of the Kennington theatre across the road. Max Miller used to be a regular, when others were paying;he lived down the road.
Pleasant staff, but a 70s dirty old pub throw back.

The Hanover Arms, Kennington

Popped in last night straight from the Fentiman. Always a very clean, well run pub with plenty of space in and out. Good for watching sports coverage to. Worth alighting from the Northern line at the Oval for a drink when ever. Safe pub as Jack Straw lives just behind the place in the wee square; worth knowing if you need an armed Policeman to shoot any suspect passing terrorists who might be disturbing your enjoyment.

The Fentiman Arms, Kennington

It would appear that someone is trying to take this place in hand and run it to a proper standard. I popped in last night and was straight away acknowledged and poured a pint of Wandles;very good.
Good looking, hispanic bearded bar man,was pulling through and testing beer;another goodsign. Food looked okay, but small portions.
Very busy, within and out. Will return, keep it up please.

The Mulberry Bush, Lambeth

Always very well managed, popular situated Youngs house across the road from LWT studios. Spacious, clean and bright. Very good selection of beers of the noble Hop and Lager. Landlord one of the best. Recommended.

The Rose and Crown, Southwark

One of the best kept pub secrets in centrel/South London. Superb Shepherd Neame beer house;clean, friendly, swift service. Situated next to the churchyard, where benches are plentiful and beer glasses are swiftly collected, when finished with. Nicely screened area with Kentish Hop poles ands wires, supporting plants. Nice touch. Another highly recommendedpub.

2 Jul 2009 09:20

The Ring, Southwark

Increadably busy and popular pub, what with the new Southwark tube across the way, both the old & new Vic theatres along the Cut. Sunny ituated corner street pub, with plenty of comfortable benches to sit in front. The Tia food looked good andappeared popular. A very good pub to recommend.

2 Jul 2009 09:13

The Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

An enjoyable pint of good heat and thirst quenching Cider here last night;sitting outside in the late evening sunny weather with good company and banter.
Lovely pub.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

A TALE OF TWO CITY PUBS.

THE CHESHIRE CHEESE, off Fleet Street. Truely Olde Worlde London;rebuilt after Great Fire London.
Well served, good old English Ales. Sam Smith's, value for money beer.
Well served, good old English food.
Very pleasant and welcoming staff.
Plenty of space to sit, stand and enjoy within and without.
Served in real glassess too.

THE JERUSALEM TAVERN, CLERKENWELL. False historic, tourist trap;created 1996.
Over rated, over puffed piddle passing for beer.
Unwelcoming,cold,charmless staff.
Dark and clausterphobic former clockmakers shop.
Plastic glass beer parlour for over priced, well over rated small beer shop.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

Popped in on Friday for a swift heart starter and only intended to stop by for an hour; ended up till the very late hour nattering and drinking with Scotty and "wee Robin" from up the road. Had the pleasure of watching a wild Starling gently hop forward to the open front bar door entrance, whilst Scotty was chatting away. He quietly and gently gathered her up, and took her back to her nest above the rafters outside. Very pleasing to see; as Robin looks like he would have bitten it's head off as a pre-luncheon treat, before tackling a round of the famous and fabulous toasties available.

One of the best kept secrets in London. Only for the true Ale drinker and lover of all good things.

30 Jun 2009 21:10

French House, Soho

Great watering hole for post-audition heart starter. Staff always on the ball, especially the Wiz from Oz who accomodates moi with a proper glass instead of a farty glass; my big mits make a pint one look like a half any day. Great place to stand outside, enjoy the pleasures of a Cigar or two listening to the I pod. Recommended.

The Ship, Ripley

Charming English pub; glad my old chums recommended it.

The Harp, Covent Garden

OH FOOLISH FELLOW THAT I AM. I PASSED ON BY THIS PUB FOR YEARS, THINKING IT WAS JUST A CUPBOARD. IT WAS CALLED THE WELSH HARP THEN. THE NAME ALWAYS PUT ME OFF. HOWEVER HAVING DROPPED THE WELSH(THAT WHY GOD CREATED THE IRISH SEA OF COURSE: SPLASH) I DECIDED TO VENTURE WITHIN. WHAT A PLACE! IT'S BLOODY MARVELLOUS. WONDERFUL BEERS. WONDERFUL SAUSAGES. GREAT STAFF; HELLO GIRLS. WHERE'S HILARY? IF YOUR EVER STUCK AT CHARING CROSS FOR A TRAIN HEAD ON TO THE HARP; IT' FOR DRINKING ANGELS!

11 Oct 2006 15:17

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

IT'S A PURE PLEASURE POPPING INTO THE GOLDERN BUDGIE WHEN VISITING THE MARYLEBONE AREA. IT'S A TERRRIFIC TARDIS OF A PUB. CLEAN, FRIENDLY AND VERY WELL RUN. HAD A DRINK THERE YESTERDAY: ARUNDALS WAS BEING SERVED; A BREW UNTIL NOW THAT I HAD NEVER EVER COME ACROSS. LOVELY TASTE; GOOD PINT. I WILL RETURN!

11 Oct 2006 14:50

The Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

I STARTED DRINKING HERE DURING THE WAR, WHEN THE MARKET WAS IN FULL SWING OUTSIDE; SADLY NOW GONE THE WAY OF ALL GOOD THINGS. IN THE 1960S & 1970S THIS PLACE WAS ONLY EVER BUSY IN THE EVENING AT THAT. I USED TO BE FASCINATED DRINKING HERE IN THE ONE TIME WOODEN PANNELLED FRONT BAR LOOKING AT THE PUB SCENE. THERE WOULD BE ONE FELLA, A COFFIN DODGER ON ONE SIDE. ANOTHER ON THE OTHER AND ONE AT THE DOOR. ALL DRINKING IN DEAD SILENCE. NO COMMENTS, NO HELLO, IT WAS A WAITING ROOM FOR DEATH. THE ONLY LIFE WAS A VISIT BY TOMMY GODFREY, A LOCAL FACE AND CHARACTER ACTOR, (THE BUS CONDUCTOR IN "PASSPORT TO PIMLICO" & THE JANITOR IN "ONLY WHEN I LAUGH", HE WAS THE ONLY BIT OF LIFE IN THE PLACE. SINCE THE IRISH "FIRM" HAVE TAKEN OVER, IT'S BLOODY MARVELLOUS! THEY'VE KNOCKED THE TWO BARS TOGETHER AND HAVE A MASSIVE SCREEN FOR FOOTBALL AND RACING ON. THE PUB'S VERY CLEAN. THE STAFF, MARY, THE YOUNG SPEEDY IRISH GIRL AND THE FELLAS ARE VERY, VERY FRIENDLY AND FUN. IT'S ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO VISIT AND THE BEERS ARE PROPERLY PULLED.
A TIP TOP PLACE TO VISIT. HOW COULD ANYONE SAY ANYTHING ELSE? JUST LOOK AT THE MIX OF YOUNG, OLD, AND GOOD LOOKING PEOPLE. I EVEN HAD A DRINK WITH JOHNNY VEGAS A FEW MONTHS BACK AND NOBODY MADE A FUSS. MAKE A DASH FOR THE CUT!
