The Hop, Wakefield

Due to BITE simply not responding to anything this is the only place I can point out that there is a Hop in Leeds which should have its own entry. Part of the same small Osset chain.

Sorry if this is deemed to be abuse but the Hop Leeds is now two years old, and despite two recommendations the owners simply won't add it, thus doing the beer drinking public a great disservice.

Same applies to the Port Street Beer House in Manchester, but that's another story.

The Old Peacock, Beeston

I can think of no earthly reason why anyone who wasn't desperate for a pint before a match (and be prepared for some of the slowest bar service known to man by people who don't know what a smile is) would go to this place.

You can actually get a real ale (Wold Top) and Staropramen from Billys Bar across the road, owned by the football club. Such niceties aren't part of the Old Peacock's game plan.

The North Bar, Leeds

A place that I always feel slightly unwelcome in when I first arrive, but within ten minutes feel like I've lived there all my life.

It's unique, in Leeds certainly, and indescribable.

The beers, well, you get the idea below.

A place that doesn't judge its customers by appearances and should therefeore not itself be judged merely on its looks.

The Beulah, Leeds

Now, sadly, closed. Not the best pub in the world when it was open, but not the worst. The only remotely walkable pub that you'd want to go to from the Farnley/Post Hill area.

The Nascot Arms, Watford

A few of us headed for the Nascot in advance of the Watford v Leeds game, guided by someone with local knowledge. What more could you want in a match day pub if you like beer and pleasant surroundings (and not to be treated as sub-human, always a bonus!)?

We got there at 11.30am, half an hour before opening, which was disappointing, but withing two seconds of us looking through the window the doors were thrown open for us. They say first impressions last, and as first impressions go that was a good one!

Hand pulled ales were, in no order of merit, Greene King IPA, Abbot, Royal London and St Edmunds. There were two other ales, Joseph Holts' Humdinger and a sixth which I've forgotten. There were no complaints at all about any of the pints, so thumbs up!

Service was pleasant, and the interior small, but comfortable.

It was a decent enough day so we sat out and watched the sport on the screen in the small beer garden. Some of our number had plates of the Thai food which is served from a pretty extensive (but not exPensive!) menu.

A 6 taxi ride to Vicarage Road, a scrappy 1-0 win and we headed straight back. It was much busier than at lunchtime, and I was disappointed that, beered out as I was, they didn't serve coffee. A small criticism overall though.

I had the spare ribs (fell off the bone) and the duck with steamed rice for around 12. Complementary Thai crackers as well! You'd be pushed to get as good value in Leeds let alone down south.

If/when our paths cross again then this bunch of Leeds fans will make the short journey from Watford Junction for sure.
