The Masons Arms, York

Popped in for a meal but were greeted by miserable and very unfriendly bar staff so we left promptly and went elswhere.

20 Oct 2010 10:14

Ye Olde Starre Inn, York

I like this olde worlde pub tucked along the alley but it is right in the middle of tourist mecca and hence suffers from being very busy and a little more expensive. Having said that we stopped for a light monday lunch which was very good value and there is also a fair selection of ever changing ales although I did have to wait a while at the bar before somebody decided they better serve some customers.

20 Oct 2010 10:11

The Wellington, York

Vary small and cozy local pub hidden in the middle of a housing estate. One bar, one pool room and a snug at the back. At weekends its full of locals and students beacuse the OB bitter is 1.43 a pint. most stuff on offer is Sam Smiths which is fine if you dont mind drinking OB all night. I found the staff and the locals very friendly and will visit agian when in the area.

20 Oct 2010 10:07

The Punchbowl, York

Another Nicholsons branded pub this one offering pies instead of sausages. A smaller not so good selection of ale, Wadsworth and John smiths so nothing to inspire me to rush in again soon. Staff a little rusty.

20 Oct 2010 10:03

The Old White Swan, York

A large old pub of the Nicholson gendre with a table service resturant and a bar resturant. on our visit at the weekend there were 6 ales on, I had the Jaipur and a Terrier both well kept.
Typical good value Nicholsons sausage pub although the toad in the hole was just 3 small Yorkshire puds rather than the large filled one.
Staff very friendly and the oly thing that let it down were the very sticky tables in the bar resturant side.

20 Oct 2010 10:00

The Last Drop Inn, York

Its always a pleasure visiting the drop when in York. Having worked my way through all the York brewery beers on offer I have to say that it is still one of my favourite pubs in York town center.

20 Oct 2010 09:55

Lamb and Lion, York

Now re-opened under new management. Friendly bar staff and a small selection of micro brewery Ales. Ok but a little more expensive than some of the other pubs in the area.

20 Oct 2010 09:54

The Star, Royston

Just a quick note to say the pub has re-opened as the Old Elm Tree. Its now a resturant. The staff not very friendly and after one visit decided that they did not want people who were just going to drink at the bar and considering its the nearest pub to me I will be walking past to one of the other puba in the village.

3 Oct 2010 11:58

The Green Man, Great Portland Street

2nd October popped in for a beer and bite on way to tube station.
Pub looks nice its large and very clean.
A good selection of ales but it was by far the most I paid for a pint while on our day in London.
Onto the food, I decided on a normal burger my partner ordered a falafel burger as she is a veggie. after we sat down to wait we were told they had run out of the falafel burgers and also the other veggie option so we cancelled the food and asked for a refund as she could not eat.
We got the refund for only one meal so I had to go to the bar and ask for the refund for the second meal which I eventually got. I have to say the barman was very friendly so I cannot fault that but it did put a small dent in our evening.
We finished our drinks and left quickly to seek food elsewhere.

3 Oct 2010 11:54

The Longbow, Stapleford

Now closed

3 Oct 2010 11:45

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

2nd of October.
This is or was one of our stopping off points when walking to the station. Today it is closed with no mention of an opening date.
Sign directs you to the Marquis further down the road.

3 Oct 2010 11:44

The Enterprise, Holborn

Visited here on the 2nd of December after a very poor visit to the Cittie of Yorke around the corner.
This is a nice pub to be in, its clean and comfortable with nice decor although looks a little less like a pub than some in the area.
It has a little courtyard at the back .
There was a selection of 3 real ales which is about normal but the price is a little over the top as I tend to draw the line at 3 a pint for ale.
May visit again if passing the door but would not go out of my way to get here when there are so many other choices around.

3 Oct 2010 11:42

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

This is a favourite stop off for me whan passing and normally its a great pub. But visiting on the 2nd of October was not the usual great visit.
There seems to be new staff, not that friendly compared to previous staff. My partner wanted a glass of Rose and the had none, In fact they have virtually no wine at all so she settled for a bottle of Sam Smiths cherry beer which was OK but very expensive. I wanted and ale and the usual large choice was nowhere to be seen so it was a pint of brewery bitter for me. Lack of choice forced us to move on rather than have a second round.

3 Oct 2010 11:36

Elm Tree, Cambridge

I normally really enjoy my visits to the Elm Tree but I have to say on my visit on the rainy May bank holiday it was very dissapointing.
Of all the ales they had on I could not find a decent ale most were too strong to drink on a daytime pub walk, I was recommended one, either March hatter or Mad hatter I think and it was very cloudy and tasted mouldy and turned my stomach, I tried different beer from the selection but after the first rough pint I could not finish the second.
Having said that the staff were upto their usual friendy witty standard and I will visit again and have another go when in town next time and maybe give a better score.

4 May 2010 13:02

The Champion of the Thames, Cambridge

A rainy may bank holiday visit. I dont think the pub has changed since my last visit. Small dark and almost empty but the fire was burning so very welcomign. Not many ales on offer so stuck to the IPA which was as expected for a greedy king ale. Friendly staff so will be visiting again soon.

4 May 2010 12:53

The Free Press, Cambridge

Visited on a rainy bank holiday in May. This is a smal and cozy yet freindly pub tucked away along a back lane near to the Grafton center. A good selection of ales at around 3 a pint. Not such a large selection of ales as some nearby but well worth a visit. Will be visiting again when in town

4 May 2010 12:49

The Mill, Cambridge

Visited on a rainy may bank holiday. Staff not freindly by far and the most expensive ale of the 5 I had in Cambridge on the day at 3.30 a pint.

4 May 2010 12:45

The Longbow, Stapleford

No longer a Thia resturant and the food is now standard pub grub.
Still a good selection of ales to be had although on the night we visited it was full of old rock and rollers and they were playing sixties music.
Could do with a tart up as its staring to look a little worn now.

6 Oct 2009 08:27

The Star, Royston

Closed September 2009 it was supposed to become an Indian resturant but now just sitting empty with boarded up windows.
Another local pub bites the dust.

6 Oct 2009 08:17

The John Barleycorn, Duxford

Not visited here for a while and heard it had re-opened so decided it was time for another visit.
First thing was the car park is small and it was full, It was very busy and as its set out for food there are not a many places to sit if you are just drinking.
The bar is very small so getting a drink means queing behind other drinkers standing at the bar.
Another thing we noticed is that it was really noisy making it hard to have a conversation and not good if you want a quiet meal.
Its a GK pub so they had IPA and Abbot along with Ruddles and a beer from St Austell brewery. there was a fifth pump but it was off.
its expensive compared with other pubs in the area and the food while looking good the portions were small compared to what I expect to get for the money charged.
Worth a visit but not too often.

6 Oct 2009 08:15

Doggetts Coat and Badge, Southwark

My preferred pub along the south side of the Thames. Its big inside with a large BBQ and seating area outside to the rear.
Some of the seating areas inside are a little dark but that adds to the atmosphere.
Its a Nicholsons pie pub with the usual good value meals on offer. A very good choice of ale and also some strange strawberry beer that my partner decided she liked. Bar staff friendly especially when trying to decide what ale to have.
Will be visiting again soon.

7 Sep 2009 12:37

Founders Arms, Bankside

Nasty horrible very expensive place that was heaving with tourists.
Does not even look like a pub, more like a large snack bar that has been dumped on the side of the Thames.
Got charged 3:30 for an average ale when a minutes walk along the river it was only 2:50. food was expensive and a very poor selection.
Ales mostly Youngs.
When you get there just keep on walking there are better pubs along the south side of the Thames.

7 Sep 2009 12:28

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark

I like this pub when it is not full to bursting. Being a Nicholsons pub you know what you are getting.
A good selection of real ales And typical Nicholson menu. This one is a fish pub.
he bar is set down low and there is seating at street level around the windows.
Onee comment is there never seems to be enough bar staff so you may have to wait a while to be served.

7 Sep 2009 12:22

The White Horse, Barton

Friday evening visit. Car park packed with people eating in the resturant but bar area empty, possibly because of the loud music being played.
Average GK beers and a friendly barman. OK but not my sort of pub.

7 Sep 2009 12:18

The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester

This is a small but very friendly pub just outside the center of Grantchester. If you are visiting at night you cant miss the blue lighting on the front of the building.
No lager, 2 Ales on. Black pig and Adnams Bitter and a cider.
It was fairly quiet when we visited and I had the Adnams which had that typical sulphur smell. I have to say that compared with other pubs around it seemed very cheap with a pint of Adnams and a small Rose coming out at less than a fiver.
The pub has lots of black and white photo's and a large selection of travel guides, walking guides and pub guides to look through while you sup.

1 Sep 2009 09:47

The Old Spring, Cambridge

A Large pub with a very small car park. Mid week evening visit and it was very very busy.
Its a Greedy King pub so the usual Abbot and IPA were on along with Edmunds and 2 guest beers Cambridge 1209 and Old Trip.
I had the Edmunds first. Totally flat and tasteless. Then tried the IPA which was OK but tasted old. Finally the 1209 which tasted like dish water. Beer prices were high with IPA at 3 a pint and Edmunds at 3.30 which is expensive even for Cambridge.
They have a fairly good food menu although the portions are small.
I probably wont visit again as there are far better pubs within a short walk.

28 Aug 2009 11:43

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Yet another Landlord and things are looking up again after the downhill spiral over the past year. There is now a full line of pumps with a fair selection of ales to be had.
The high tables and chairs are gone and have been replaced with normal height tables that you can actually eat at.
We ate here and the food menu has changed from Nicholsons sausages to a Fish menu, Shame as I fancied sausages in one of those giant Yorkshire puds.
Settled for the Steak and Ale pie, It was OK but nothing to write home about.
As for the ales they were served to my likeing with no real complaints from me.

27 Jul 2009 11:16

The Clachan, Soho

About the best pub around the Carnaby street area having real ales rather than just lager. Tucked behind Liberties its a smallish pub with lots of dark wood and dark red around in typical victorian style. There were about 6 ales on offer, Tried the Monster Mash which was typical of Scottish Ales and awful.
OK pub for a flying visit but would not stop for a session.

27 Jul 2009 11:08

The Iron Duke, Mayfair

Late saturday afternoon visit, Nice very quiet pub tucked away from the busy area of Mayfair. A good selection of Fullers beers on offer and both the discovery and the chiswick were top notch.
I would guess it gets very busy when the footie is on as it has Sky TV so would probably avoid a visit during the footie season.

27 Jul 2009 10:58

The Warwick Castle, Maida Vale

Saturday afternoon visit after a long hot walk from Camden Town along the river. First impression not a bad pub with three ales on.
Stood at bar and waited and waited while the barman who seemed to have a problem remembering the order that people arrived at the bar served everyone else that arrived after we did.
Eventually got served and tried a very nice pint of Sussex best followed by a pint of Pride. Both in good state.

27 Jul 2009 10:54

The Red House, Longstowe

After the last visit which was very enjoyable I have to post another after what was to me an expensive meal that was not upto the standard this pub used to have.
Dirty glasses and cutlery and sticky floors are not my idea of a nice evening out.
The service was friendly and the food arrived fairly quickly but my main course was poor to the point I felt ill after we left. Also looking back at the bill we appeared to haver been overcharged.
Also a note the sign outside says 4 real ales, I counted only 2 and a cider.
Shame to see a good pub go downhill and suffice to say we probably wont visit again.

18 Jun 2009 09:45

The Temeraire, Saffron Walden

Popped in for a light sunday lunch and an ale. This is a large pub with many tables and a large beer garden.
We found a secluded booth to sit in at the rear of the pub that kept the noise down to a level that allowed almost normal conversation.
Lots of ales on, I asked for the Ringwood. Sorry it's just run out, OK I will have the Cromwell then. Sorry it's just run out. OK then I will settle for the Ruddles then.
Food fair, cheap and upto JD standards, service fairly quick and ale drinkable. Sunday lunch menu looked good value but we only wanted a light snack.
OK if you have no better place to go to

18 Jun 2009 09:36

The Fox And Duck, Therfield

From the outside the pub looks like a nice country pub, with benches on the green outside. Once inside it is obviously a resturant with tables dotted around and only a small bar area making it look very bare inside.
There were a couple of real ales that did not really inspire me to want to stay too long and we got overcharged by a large amount on one round. Having said that the chap behind the bar was very friendly.

18 Jun 2009 09:28

The Golden Slipper, York

Average pub with 6 average ales that can be got all over York. OK for a quick lunchtime stop, If you can get a window seat then you can watch people as they rush past in their race to go noplace.
Staff friendly enough but the pub just does not do anything to make me want to go out of my way to get there.

1 Jun 2009 09:16

The Red House, Longstowe

A saturday early evening visit for a meal and a few beers.
A strange little pub but a very welcoming atmosphere, Friendly staff, Good food and ales.
On tap at the time were Church end brewery Grave digger, Cottage brewery bitter and Green King IPA.
I tried both the Church and and the Cottage ales and found them both to be excellent.
On to the food, My choice was the good old liver and bacon which was really good, My partner chose the suffed mushrooms which also looked good. although it took ages for the food to arrive even though it was early and not that busy the wait was worth it.
Will be visiting again.

19 May 2009 10:14

The Pig And Abbot, Abington Piggots

A friday evening visit after a dissapointing pint of green King IPA in the Crown not far away. Pub was fairly busy and it took ages to get served but the ale selection was worth the wait.
On tap were Adnams Bitter, Black Sheep, London Pride and Doom Bar.
The pub is olde world but in recent years has become more popular as a resturant.
If you are planning on visiting for drink only it is best to wait until the food serving is over as it gets a little quieter then.

5 May 2009 11:17

The Hare and Hounds, Harlton

This is a locals pub and hence normally full of locals. Having said that we were made to feel welcome. The ales on offer were Bomdardier, Eagle IPA and Spitfire all in tip top shape.
There is a fairly good food menu and the prices are a little high for pub food but from what we could se the meals were ample portions.
The pub has regular music and themed dinner nights which seem to sell out very quickly.
All in all an OK pub if you are passing but would not go out of my way to visit.

26 Apr 2009 21:34

The Dolphin, Royston

This is one of my local pubs its has a bit of a bad name for trouble probably because it is the cheapest pub in the village with IPA at 2.45 and the younger drinkers go there because it has footy on the big screen.
Having said that if you avoid friday and saturday nights it is a fair family pub.
The food is good value and what I expect to pay for in a pub.
It has the usual Green king IPA and Abbot ale which you get in almost every chain pub in this area.

20 Apr 2009 10:13

The Mitre, Cambridge

Popped in for a late lunch while sighseeing with family in Cambridge.
A very good choice of ales on offer, too many to try on a lunchtime visit so will have to visit again when I have more time
The food was good value offering 2 for one on some main meals.
Not a very large pub so can fill up quickly especially at lunchtime.
One of the better pubs in this part of Cambridge.

20 Apr 2009 10:02

The Tally Ho, Royston

Great little country Free house, very much for the locals.
Ale options were Buntingford Highwayman, Nethergate IPA and Marlow IPA. Ales served from the cask not pumped.
Also on offer was Aspalls cider on draught, Amstel Lager and Bitburger Lager on draught.
The bar area is very small with an open fire and lots of brass things hanging on the walls. There is a larger resturant area, The food choice looked good although in my opinion very expensive for a pub.

20 Apr 2009 09:52

The Doric Arch, Euston

Saturday 4th, a visit while waiting for the train. Dark and dingy and seems to have gone downhill a bit recently but better than some of the others nearby that are full of chrome lager pumps.
A Good selection of ales on but nothing I fancied so plumeted for a Discovery chilled, Fullers what have you done its awful. Ice cold and tasteless.
The Titanic White Star was a better choice but was still lacking any real taste.
They have changed to combination lock to the loo so you have to ask at the bar for the number.

6 Apr 2009 14:28

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Saturday evening visit looking for food and refreshment, Not too busy but very noisy, Upstairs closed again so had to eat downstairs, Guest beer was IPA so gave that a wide berth as its everywhere now.
I had a pint of Pride which was OK and my partner had a glass of Rose,
A quick look at the menu shows that it has changed and the giant Yorkie puds and chioce of sausages have gone, Shame as this was why we visited.
I decided to have the Steak and Landlord pie wich I found very filling andgood value although it came with Leeks Urgggggg.
My partner had the Mushroom with melted mouldy cheese salad thing that also looked very nice.
Definately a better option trhan some of the other chain pubs nearby although the ale choice could be better.

6 Apr 2009 14:22

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

Not so sure about the Pillars since it changed at the beginninng of the year but decided to give it a try on saturday for an early evening pint. not very busy considering it was a saturday.
Mostly Adnams and nice to see Oyster on but decided to have an pint of what I thought was Batemans at the far end of the bar. Tasted like dishwater so my advice is stick to the Adnams here.

6 Apr 2009 14:15

The Harp, Covent Garden

Mid afternoon saturday 4th. The big windows at the front were open making it very pleasant sitting inside watching the world go by.
Went in for a Sussex best but this was off so settled for a rather nice pint of Landlord.

6 Apr 2009 14:05

The Hawley Arms, Camden

Lunctime visit saturday 4th. They only serve ale at the downsatirs bar but you cannot sit downstairs unless you are eating.
Upstairs bar serves fizzy beer only.
Had a pint of tastless Hare Raiser and a slightly better pint of Ale Pull Fool, Not much else on offer but then its a Green King pub so same old same old.

6 Apr 2009 13:59

The Queens Head, Newton

This is what a village pub should be like. Cosy and friendly. The first thing that you notice when you enter is that its lit by candles rather than bright lights, The saloon bar has an open fire that makes the old wooden beams and furnishings made from chunks of tree's feel really homely.
They have ale served from the cask and if you like Adnams beers then you are in for a treat. Broadside, Explorer and Bitter.
All in all a very enjoyable quiet midweek evening visit.

26 Mar 2009 08:28

The White Horse, Foxton

A nice friendly little country pub. The food option is assorted Tapas.
There are normally 3 ales on offer, GK IPA, Adnams and Pride.
No complaints on the ale but limited car parking space.. Bar staff very nice.
Worth a visit.

25 Mar 2009 13:35

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Seems to have changed a lot recently. The tall downstairs tables have now gone and the bar staff changed but the food menu and the ale is just the same.
Upstairs room was open but the upstairs bar was closed.

12 Mar 2009 16:52

The Harp, Covent Garden

Popped in for a saturday afternoon beer and discovered they have a very small room upstairs. We sat by the window upsatirs and watched the world wizz past outside.
I tried a pint of Harvey's Sussex best, but its not the best beer that I have had. Then a pint of Landlord, Normally I don't Like TT ales but I have to say it was very nice.

12 Mar 2009 16:49

The Postern Gate, York

This pub is a good stopping off place either going in or coming out of the town if you are staying in the Fishergate area of York.
Usual JD's offerings of cheap food and beer or wine.
Good assortment of traditional tables, High tables and Low tables with comfy chairs.
Ten ale pumps although some duplicate ales on. Can get busy early evening when people are eating before heading out into town.
Always planty of bar staff on hand so not a long wait for a drink.

18 Jan 2009 10:29

The Last Drop Inn, York

A cold January evening visit. Bar staff very helpful, A good selection of York brewery ales on offer. I would like to have rated it higher and stayed longer but it was so cold in there that everyone had their coats and hats on.
Maybe a pound in the meter for the heating would be a good idea.

18 Jan 2009 10:19

The Black Swan, York

Popped in for a saturday afternoon ale on a very cold day in January.
Nice old pub with lots of old interesting features. Proabably the most expensive pint of average ale that I have had in York but still worth a look to say you have been there, Seen it and done it.

18 Jan 2009 10:16

The Doric Arch, Euston

Late saturday night 22nd. Far to early for train with time to loose.
Great little pub with a fine choice of ales and what a way to finish a day of drinking. The Centurian ghost is a really good yorkshire ale.
The young lady behind the bar was very friendly. If you need the loo there is a combination lock to get into it. You ask the bar staff the number and then try to remember it as you stagger to the loo.
Good place to stop before heading home on the train.

24 Nov 2008 10:13

The Bath House, Soho

Odd little pub that I have walked past many times. This time we went in. Evening of Saturday 22nd. Not very busy which meant we got a table. Ale was OK, price was average, Bar staff OK.
Its a fair place to stop if you are in the area and fancy a quick quiet drink rather than fight to get to the bar in the nearby pubs that are rammed full.

24 Nov 2008 09:56

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Saturday 22nd early evening. Already full and people outside on the street. Cant remember much about it so I guess it was OK.
Normally a fair pub with good ales and a queue for the blokes loo.

24 Nov 2008 09:48

The Harp, Covent Garden

Saturday 22nd. First visit to this very small pub. Almost walked past witout going in but glad we did.
There was a fair selection of ales on offer and a bonus we managed to get a table to enjoy our pints of Tribute.
The loo is tiny and up a narrow staircase.
Will visit again when in the area.

24 Nov 2008 09:44

The Dog and Duck, Soho

This place has really gone downhill. Its used to have a large choice of ales and people spilling out into the street.
Saturday 22nd, room inside and a choice of only 2 ales Landlord being the choice. Beer OK but the loo stank so badly it made me feel sick.
Wont be visiting again unless all the other pubs nearby close.

24 Nov 2008 09:39

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

Saturday 22nd Pub seems to have changed again, Mostly Adnams beer, Broadside, Explorer and Bitter all well kept. The beer choice suited me as I like Adnams better then Greedy King. The stairs down to the loo are dodgy if you have been drinking all day.
Not as busy as usual which meant we were not standing outside in the street.

24 Nov 2008 09:35

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town

A fair food led pub that caters for families so expect young kids if you visit during the day.
We popped in mid afternoon on saturday 22nd before jumping on the tube into town. Good selection of ales on although the price seemed a bit higher than normal for the area.
We sat by the window watching the drivers trying to get through the width restiction outside without hitting the kerb.
Its an OK pub but would probably not visit again unless in the area.

24 Nov 2008 09:30

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

Small pub in a housing area. Not my sort of pub and not a lot of ale choice unless you like Bass which I dont. Bar staff and locals very friendly.
If your short like me then the loos are way too high and you may need to stand on a milk crate to get you over the lip.

24 Nov 2008 09:25

The Oxford, Kentish Town

Saturday 22nd early afternoon. Its a food led pub. There were 2 ales on, Ark Royal and another that I cannot remember. Bar staff OK, Ale OK but a bit out of the way for another visit.

24 Nov 2008 09:22

Quinn's, Camden

Saturday 22nd early afternoon. Its a bit of a shock to your eyes as you walk along the road with its bright yellow paint.
Inside looks old and worn out. There were 2 bar staff both over the age of retirement but very friendly.
There is a good selection of ale on tap and a fridge full of German and Belgium beers.
Seems to be very much a locals pub but made a change from the pubs in Camden town that are aimed at teens.

24 Nov 2008 09:18

The Hawley Arms, Camden

Visited for the first time since it re-opend at lunchtime on saturday the 22nd. Its all done out nice again but there was only 2 ales on, IPA and Abbot. Most of the Lagers had run out as well.
Not quite the pub it used to be.

24 Nov 2008 09:14

The Cambridge Blue, Cambridge

Superb pub hidden away in the backstreets off Mill road. A really good selection of ales on offer something like 10 on the board. The Oak Leaf Bitter was very nice. The food being taken to customers smelt delicious, shame I had already had lunch or I would have eaten as well.
Looking forward to the mini beer fest in December.

10 Nov 2008 11:57

Elm Tree, Cambridge

A saturday afternoon visit while shopping in town. As usual a very good selection of ales on offer. No food available which is a shame. Bar staff very friendly and helpful when trying to decide which of the ales to try.
If you like your Ale or your strange forign bottled beers and do not want a pub with a big screen TV this is the place for you. Who needs a TV when you can play one of the many baodr games they have.

10 Nov 2008 11:54

Pivo Cafe Bar, York

Second time I have visited Pivo when in York.
Good place to have a daytime ale when your partner wants a coffee or tea.
The good bits. The selection of beer and cask ales, The building is superb with its wooden beams and creaky stairs.
The bad bits, The staff or lack of who only want to talk to their friends who sit at the bar and not serve customers, not much in the way of bites if you get there mid afternoon or later.
Will visit again despite the staff because the of the great beer selection.

6 Nov 2008 15:53

The Star, Royston

October and a temp manager. Much better atmosphere and beers also much better than they have been for a long time.
Food only served at lunchtimes which is not so good as we used to eat evening meals here a lot before it all changed back in May.

27 Oct 2008 14:12

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

Saturday afternoon, Only Deuchars and Bombardier on neither of which I like so it was a very very brief visit.

27 Oct 2008 14:06

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Saturday evening, what has happened, Only one pump on and its pride. Upstairs resturant seemd closed as well. Normally our watering and Feeding hole before we get on the tube to go home but not this time.

27 Oct 2008 14:04

The Ship, Soho

Love this pub, very different from the others around the Soho area.
Fullers beers on offer, The ESB was top notch on saturday evening.
The pub is very small, noisey and busy. The downside is the loos smell really bad, probably the worst smelling I have been into but dont let that put you off visiting.

27 Oct 2008 13:17

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

Saturday late afternoon visit, usual very good selection of Ales. Had a very nice pint of Old Mill Halloween surprise after having tasters of some of the other ales.
No seating left inside so had to sit outside in the street.

27 Oct 2008 13:14

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Saturday afternoon visit while in Holborn, Upstairs bar closed for a private function so the downstairs bar was very busy.
Usual selection of Sams ales, Brewery bitter at 1.85 and pretty rough this time.

The Star, Royston

September 2008. Sad to say another great village pub ruined. Food not very good unless you just want a bar snack of Burgers or Jackets.
Ales up and down in quality and some of the hand pumps have been replaced with those tall chrome freezing cold lager taps. Beer price increased again.
There are better pub choices within a few minutes walk.

17 Sep 2008 15:00

Highwayman, Gravely

Quick visit for a bite and a beer after a saturday shopping trip.
Food menu much reduced choice but still very good value.
Only Ale was GK IPA which was fair.
Very noisy, lots of families with young kids running about and screaming.

17 Sep 2008 14:51

The Standard Bearer, Stevenage

Typical Spoons pub. Lots of space and not enough seats. Cheap avarage pub food. Ale price best around, Good selection of Ales on tap, 5 on saturday with 2 being guest.
Had a nice pint of Sneck Lifter for less than 2 quid.
Downside is every bugger in stevenage goes there because its dirt cheap.
Best time to visit is in the afternoon between the lunch rush and the evening rush.

17 Sep 2008 14:47

The Grapes, Limehouse

Very small but great little pub.
The inside is fairly small with a tiny terrace overlooking the Thames.
A good choice of hand pumped ales to choose from.
Staff very friendly.
This pub specialises in fish so if your a fish lover you will have plenty of choice from the menu.
The pub seems to have some odd opening hours so it may be worth checking before you visit.

31 Aug 2008 16:02

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

Great old London Pub.
Good choice of beers, 4 Ales on hand pump.
Had a burger for a lunchtime snack and cannot fault the food or the service.
There is a good choice of seating inside. We had a view out over the Thames from the lower resturant area.
Inside is very nice, Old looking with lots of old possibly origional features.

31 Aug 2008 15:57

The Pig And Abbot, Abington Piggots

Great village pub although the bar staff were slow to serve and could do with an injection of happy tablets.
Good selection of Ales, Tried the Burntwood bitter, followed by a London pride and then an Adnams.
All served just as they should be.
The food menu looks good with plenty of choices to suit all eating habbits although a little pricey for a pub.
Its a small pub and can get very busy when serving food but quickly calms down after food time is over.

25 Jul 2008 12:10

The Royal Oak, Barrington

Wanted a change for a summer friday night drink.
Location is nice and the pub is nice. 4 Real ales on and had a good pint of moors.
The downside is its an expensive resturant pub with averageish food. Bar staff from south of the equator who are just not right for a village pub and the lack of people in there warm on a friday night shows this.
OK for quick watering stop on the waty to somewhere better but would not stop for more than one.
Oh yes and I need to say that a side of chips should be more than 8 3/4 inch thick chunks of potato...........

30 Jun 2008 11:08

The Ribs of Beef, Norwich

Popped in for a pint on an saturday afternoon after a visit to the Cathederal. Bit of a way from the town center near to the river. I can imagine that it heaves on a friday and satuday night although it was fairly quiet when we visited..
It has 2 bars and serves food, Menu looks good.
I counted 9 hand pumps of Ale plus 1 of cider.
Some good ales on offer and seem to be kept well.
Bar staff friendly.
Will be visiting again to try some more ales.

22 Jun 2008 17:09

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

Saturday afternoon pint after a wander around the museum. Surprisingly quiet considering the location. Lots of good ales to choose from and the bar staff helpful when choosing what to drink.
I had a rather nice pint of Doom Bar.

11 Jun 2008 12:49

The Cittie of Yorke, Holborn

Popped in for a quiet saturday afternoon pint, I love the little personal cubby holes along the wall.
Was surprised to only get charged 1.85 for a pint of Ale, what good value and worth the extra few minutes walk to get to.
A good selection of assorted beers amd ales on offer.

11 Jun 2008 12:45

The Worlds End, Camden

What a barn, Barely OK ale and below average bar staff. Place could do with a polish now and then and yes please put some air freshner in the loo.
Only going here now as the Hawley Arms is closed and its next door to the station.

2 Jun 2008 10:32

The Black Horse, Melbourn

June, down to 2 ales now, IPA and Wherry.
Different bar staff again and we got well overcharged for a round.

2 Jun 2008 10:20

The Star, Royston

Under new management (June), reduced food menu and confused beers, Adnams was not Adnams and I have no idea what it was. IPA was off. Pride OK.
Have to wait until the new owners get settled in before visiting again. I just hope it does not turn into wine bar...........

2 Jun 2008 10:16

Elm Tree, Cambridge

Newley refurbished and under mew management.
What a sight to behold, 10 Ale Hand pumps on the bar and 7 of them ales that I have not seen around Cambridge before.
An excellent stopping off point for a quick ale or stop and sample the whole lot.

2 Jun 2008 10:11

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge

Late saturday evening visit on way back to station. As usual a good selection of ales although the bar staff today were not upto their usual friendly standard. Got told off for stepping outside the front door with an ale in my hand. so not a good pub for smokers as they have no garden and you have to stand on the street.
Still worth a visit if your passing through.

12 May 2008 12:24

The St Radegund, Cambridge

A new pub to me and what a fine pub. Located a minute from the Grafton center. A very good selection of ales including 3 from the Milton brewey and some dubious looking cider. I tried the milton sack cloth which was OK but I am not really a fan of Milton ales.
Bar staff very friendly and welcoming.

12 May 2008 12:13

The Champion of the Thames, Cambridge

Very nice find although a little small. Friendly landord who gave very good tips on what pub to head for next for decent ale choice. Visited saturday evening and had a well kept pint of fireside and some free cheese.
A very good choiuce if you are around the king street area of town.

12 May 2008 12:05

The Eagle, Cambridge

So many tourists in one little pub. Small courtyard with tables and no chance of a seat let alone a drink from the bar.

12 May 2008 12:01

The Granta, Cambridge

Best of the pubs around the mill pond only let down by the lack of bar staff on saturday afternoon leaving long waits for much needed refreshment.
Ale good and plenty of outside seating overlooking the mill pond.

12 May 2008 11:59

The Mill, Cambridge

A pub that heaves with tourists as its next to the river. OK choice of beers if you can get near the bar. Plastic pint glasses with a charge of 20p deposit. and beer at tourist prices.
Lots of grass to go sit on but better pubs within spitting distance.

12 May 2008 11:52

The Cross Keys, Cambridge

A small bright yellow pub just outside of the city center. Good selection of ales but not much outside seating. Tried the Ringwood best not normally seen around here and it was very good. Barman very friendly and worth the short walk to get to.

12 May 2008 11:36

The Panton Arms, Cambridge

Great little locals pub hidden just away from the main area of Cambridge a minutes walk from the Botanical gardens and worth heading to. Large outside seating area and well kept ales. Had a very nice pint of Reverand James and sat in the afternoon sun.
Not so sure about the pale Green paint but it does not affect the ale.

12 May 2008 11:33

The Anchor, Cambridge

Not so inspiring pub next to the river in Cambridge.
Too busy for me. Some ales on but nothing notable.

12 May 2008 11:28

The Longbow, Stapleford

What a great pub and a bonus a really nice Thai as well. The Longbow looks like a pub inside rather than an oriental resturant conversion. There are at least four real ales on hand pump. I had a very nice pint of Nethergate Augustinian and they also had Caskade and Bitter n Twisted plus Adnams. Thai Food very good although the menu does not really cater too well for vegetarians unless you like bean curd.

21 Apr 2008 10:32

The Newman Arms, Fitzrovia

Been trying to visit for months but it never seems to be open.

13 Apr 2008 16:48

The Euston Flyer, Euston

Popped in to waste a bit of time on the way to Kings Cross station. Its a pretty large bar but well laid out and pleasant. A very good selection of ales to choose from. A far better place to wait than the bar on the station.

13 Apr 2008 16:47

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

A better visit to the Pillars. 9pm saturday evening, My partner wanted a coffee and we were told the coffee was now finished. After a little persuasion and maybe the thought we would go elsewhere the bartender made a fresh brew. I had a Theakstons which was very nice. They also had Adnams Oyster on which you do not normally seem so we just had to try a pint. Can recommend it if you like your ales dark.

13 Apr 2008 16:44

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Saturday ale and evening meal, Went upstairs to eat where it is quiet. Good choice of beers but cannot recommend the Sly Fox as it tastes of Ginger and I prefer my ales to taste of ale, Other beers good. Food superb, the daily special sausages were served in the biggest yorkshire puds I have seen.

13 Apr 2008 16:39

The Mudlark, London Bridge

Popped in saturday after a visit to the London Bridge experience. It was really busy but then it was raining very hard. It was very noisey, too noisey to hold a conversation. A few good ales on offer. Service a bit iffy and had to ask for a full pint rather than 3/4 plus head. No complaints about the ale but not the place to go if you want a quiet beer.

13 Apr 2008 16:34

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

Popped in again saturday because they have been advertising a real Ale festival. Neither of the Cask ales available so stooped for a fair pint of pride then left for a better selection elsewhere.

13 Apr 2008 16:23

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

Have not visited for a while but decided to stop off for a meal and an ale or 2. Staff friendly but the menu has changed for the worse so will be finding another place to eat in the future.

23 Mar 2008 00:04

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

Visited again on good friday, Had a nice pint of theakstons after struggling with the bar staff not having a good understanding of the English language.

23 Mar 2008 00:01

The Star, Royston

Nice pub. Very friendly bar staff and good pub food.
Has Greene king IPA and Abbot along with Adnams and a guest ale.
It has a large beer garden and outside play area if you have to take your kids along.

18 Feb 2008 20:06

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge

Again a good selection of ales to choose from. The Tiger is always good, not sure about the Umble its an aquired taste. Atmosphere was good although the gents loo is looking a little in need of paint.

3 Feb 2008 17:33

The Kingston Arms, Cambridge

Its always a pleasure to visit this pub when in town. Again a really good choice of ales, Had a very nice pint of wots occuring foollowed by a JHB. Top marks for the beer and the chance to sample all the ales.

3 Feb 2008 17:31

The Greyhound, Sawston

Both pride and Wherry on this week served as they should be. Lunctime snacks upto the usual high standard.

3 Feb 2008 17:28

The Emperor, Cambridge

limited ales, Sport on TV and packed full of losers getting drunk and hassling the ladies. If you want good ale there are far better pubs only a few minutes walk away.

3 Feb 2008 17:25

The Cambridge Blue, Cambridge

Top pub, very friendly bars staff and many choice ales on offer, too many to list.

3 Feb 2008 17:22

The Priory, York

Used this pub and the way back from a meal out in town in January. Had a naff pint of the festive ale. It was dim and cold in there. Looks like a stopping off and filling up point for people heading into town for a night out.
Bar staff friendly and it has a pool table tucked away at the back.

16 Jan 2008 10:53

The Punchbowl, York

Use this pub twice during a January long weekend in York. Ate here once and the food was good value typical JD's but made better because you can get a burger and beer for around 4.
The first visit was very noisy and stayed for one pint of the festive ale, On the second visit it was much quieter and had a pint of Old Speckled hen that was good althoug a little too cold and then a pint of Centurian ghost which was also good.

16 Jan 2008 10:50

The John Barleycorn, Duxford

This is very much a locals pub. Great inside with all that old wood and brass. Food selection fair, Ales OK.

2 Jan 2008 16:21

The Crown, Sheringham

Set at the bottom end of Sheringham high street overlooking the sea.
Its not the best pub and in summer it is normally full of families however the food is good value and there is a selection of ales to be tried.
Try the small secluded outdoor seating area at the back if the pub is busy.

2 Jan 2008 16:17

White Horse, Milton

Good food but can get very busy at lunchtimes in summer due to its location near to the Cambridge science park. Ale good.

2 Jan 2008 16:13

The Royal Oak, Barrington

I used to drink and eat here all the time but its not quite the same since it became a pouplar resturant rather than a quaint village pub.
The food is very good but can be expensive. Normally a good choice Ale to be had on pump.
Its a nice watering place on a summer evening cycle ride.

2 Jan 2008 16:08

The Milton Arms, Cambridge

This used to be a great food pub from that well known big plate chain The Hungry Horse, The kids loved coming here to eat.
But after a run of badly cooked meals and slow service we have stopped coming here in favour of other options within a short distance. I cannot recommend it.

2 Jan 2008 15:59

Green Man, Trumpington

Where has the bar gone? Seems to be totally food led now.

2 Jan 2008 15:50

The Bees in the Wall, Whittlesford

Pub geared towards the locals who want food. Ale is good.
Evenings can be very quiet during the week.

2 Jan 2008 15:47

The King William IV, Heydon

Went to the Willy for a booked birthday celebration. Our group was spread over a number of tables. Food was expensive and not really my thing.
A number of dishes came up either wrong or missing completely.
It was packed to bursting in the resturant area it was too hot inside to eat and there were also large queues at the bar for drinks.
Maybe quieter avoiding saturday nights.

2 Jan 2008 15:24

The Black Horse, Melbourn

This is one of my local pubs.
Not the same as it used to be, Taken over by those folks from south of the equator who took out the bar stools and tried to make it a fancy resturant.
Having said that the Ale is fairly good and they now have bar snacks again.
Not over impressed with the menu or the price.

2 Jan 2008 15:19

The Wheatsheaf, Fitzrovia

OK gave this place a second try the saturday after christmas.
Slightly better selection of Ales and they have fixed the loo but still a little drab inside.
You May do better walking a little further down the road.

2 Jan 2008 15:13

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Popped in for an afternoon pint the saturday after christmas. Usual good standard of ale. Had the Adnams Yuletide which was very nice. Other half had a glass of rose that was not so good.
Still a worthwill stop just off Oxford street.

2 Jan 2008 15:09

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

Went in on the saturday after christmas for an early evening meal and a pint.
I cannot fault the food, Ale or the bar staff although there was an issue with the tills causing some problems when paying.
A small tip for the bar staff, get rid of that awful IPA and replace it with something a little more like ale.........

2 Jan 2008 15:04

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

What has happened to the Pillars. We went in on the saturday after christmas only to find non English speaking bar staff. Whats that all about?.

2 Jan 2008 15:01

The Wheatsheaf, Fitzrovia

Not sure what to make of this pub. From the oustide its all "come in and have a nice traditional ale" Once inside its a bit of a let down. Nothing really exciting on tap and not a really welcoming feel from the bar staff.

3 Dec 2007 11:59

The Lucas Arms, Kings Cross

OK for a quick pint while waiting for your train.
Has Pool table and big screen TV. Not my sort of pub.

3 Dec 2007 11:54

The Hawley Arms, Camden

As an ale drinker this is about the best pub in Camden for ales. No Ale at the upstairs bar so you have to stagger up a few floors spilling ale on the way. Has upstairs outdoor seating next to railway line.

3 Dec 2007 11:42

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

I like this pub, Good Ale selection rather than just the usual fixed brewery choice. Bar staff could be a little friendlier.
Visited on a saturday evening in December. It was comfortable and not so busy that you had to stand.

3 Dec 2007 11:39

The Arena Tavern, Letchworth

Visited here after the Letchworth beer fesival closed its doors. Its an OK pub with run of the mill ales. Its small and dark. A better choice if you are already in town and fancy a pint rather than going to one of the large chain pubs around.

12 Nov 2007 12:44

The Baron of Beef, Cambridge

A fair pub in an area full of pubs. Ale nothing much to write about. The bar staff are into rugby so if there is a match on then it will be rammed with rugby fans getting drunk and making the floor very sticky.

12 Nov 2007 12:37

The Flying Pig, Cambridge

Is this place still open?. I thought it closed ages ago.
Used to visit a lot and while it was in need of a coat of paint the beer and staff were always good.
Must have a visit again soon and see if it has changed much.

12 Nov 2007 12:33

The Kingston Arms, Cambridge

This is a good pub for real ale 6-8 on offer but if you want fizzy lager then dont bother as it has none. Its sort of posh but not. Menu looked good but did not want to spoil the curry I was having later in the evening.
2 internet terminals looking very out of place in a pub and the bar staff have a disliking of mobile phones going off.

12 Nov 2007 12:29

The Slug and Lettuce, Cambridge

This is not a pub, its a trendi fizzy beer and alcho pops bar full of teens trying to look older and old people trying to be young and trendy.
Only use it as a stopping point on the way to somewhere good.

12 Nov 2007 12:24

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge

A gem of a pub, only spoilt by the fact that its full of blokes with woolley jumpers and silly little beards. Saying that the selection of ales is excellent ant the location makes it a must on any loacl pub crawl.

12 Nov 2007 12:21

The Railway Tavern, Great Shelford

Rather odd pub. Lots of real ales on draft, choice of at least 5. Pool table, bar billiards table. Thai resturant. Yes its a Thai resturant with superb food and good real ale.

12 Nov 2007 12:18

The Greyhound, Sawston

Good pub, ale served as it should be, London pride on all the time with guest ales.
Food very good but beware friday luntime as it gets very busy.
Mid week is OAPs special at lunchtime and is also a busy time.

12 Nov 2007 12:11

Highwayman, Gravely

Hungry horse resturant pub with the usual food available. only one draft ale Greene King IPA served super cold with no taste whatsoever.
OK for a quick bite for the family but apart from that absolutely not character.

12 Nov 2007 12:07

The Worlds End, Camden

One of the few pubs in Camden that has not become a wine bar or trendi fizzy beer pub.
Yes its rough and it does get busy being right next to the market but it is a good pub that serves ale.

12 Nov 2007 11:59

The Black Horse, Melbourn

Used to be the place to go every friday and saturday. Now its a gastro food led pub with crap ale run by those charmless people from south of the equator.
Why do they come here and take away the bars stools and serve the ale ice cold.
Cant even get a bag of normal salt and vinegar crisps.

12 Nov 2007 11:46

The Lamb Tavern, Leadenhall Market

Heard a lot about this pub so decided to visit one saturday and guess what......It was closed. WTF Leadenhall is a nice place to visit.

12 Nov 2007 11:42

The Ship, Tower Hill

Tried to visit this pub but its closed on saturday. Looks nice on the outside but no idea what the inside or the beer is like.

12 Nov 2007 11:39

Ye Olde Watling, Mansion House

Tried to visit but not open saturday.

12 Nov 2007 11:36

The Viaduct Tavern, St Pauls

Tried to visit but its not open saturday.

12 Nov 2007 11:35

The Punch And Judy, Covent Garden

Is this a pub?. Where is the ale?. Useful balcony for watching the Covent Garden courtyard entertainment if you can get up there.

12 Nov 2007 11:30

The Marquis of Granby, Fitzrovia

Nice pub for late saturday afternoon bite to eat. Usual JN selection of ales served OK. Had no problem with the bars staff. If you like sausages and mash then they have a good selection including veggie ones.
Gets very full saturday nights.

12 Nov 2007 11:26

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Good pub, good selection of ales and whisky.
Floors sticky. and loo's awful but still gets rammed full on a weekend.

12 Nov 2007 11:18

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

Always used to be a good pub but the selection of ales of late has ben very poor to the point of boring.
Still nice to go to on a saturday afternoon when its not too busy. Saturday nights its packed out.
Loo's are downstairs in the cellar with a dodgy staircasethats not good if you have had a few.

12 Nov 2007 11:15

The Dog and Duck, Soho

Tiny pub that heaves on a saturday night. Dont expect to get a seat you will be out on the pavement drinking. Very good selection of ales to choose from and yes the loo's need sorting.

12 Nov 2007 11:13

The Duke of York, Fitzrovia

Tucked away little gem between Goodge street and rathbone place. Dont go on its outside looks.
Very much a locals pub but the ale is good and the bar staff very friendly.

12 Nov 2007 11:10

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

This is the best pub in the area, always very busy.
Ale very good and the food is best value for miles around.

12 Nov 2007 11:06

The Bricklayers Arms, Fitzrovia

Whats this, No hand pumps. Dark and dingy little place. Fizzy beer only. This is not a pub.

12 Nov 2007 11:04

The Black Horse, Fitzrovia

Nice pub, Friendly bar staff, good ale choice.
Not sure about the high tables in the bar area.
Food good and not overpriced.
Dont forget to vote on the next visiting ale while you are there.

12 Nov 2007 11:01

The Ship, Soho

Great small pub, not much seating but then I prefer to stand. Very friendly bar staff and the ale although a little too cold was very good.
Can recommend this for a stopping point on a pub crawl or before heading off to a club.

12 Nov 2007 10:58

The Crown And Two Chairmen, Soho

Nooooooo What the hell happened to this once great pub. Its painted awful blue outside and has only resturant seating now.
It claims to be a resturant/pub.
It still has all the ale taps but where is the pub part.
