The Salamander, Bath

The Bath Ales are what attracted me to this pub, and the fact that they are listed in the Good Beer Guide (2005 vintage). The beer certainly didn't disappoint as it was first rate! What started out as a quiet drink with the wife, soon descended in to a bustling drinking establishment full of students. Nothing wrong with that of course - just not what we wanted at the time, so we made our way to a more spacious pub to continue the art of quiet conversation. For this reason, I can't quite fathom the comments regarding the quietness. No evidence of that on a Friday night!

Gascoyne Place, Bath

Perhaps now that I've matured beyond the 10 pints in an evening mentality, my tastes have changed. My wife and I had to the good fortune to find this pub having been crowded out of The Salamander previously. The beer on tap was very good Bellringer by Abbey Ales, and the winelist included some unusual wines by the glass - Indian wine anybody?

We were so impressed with what we found, that we went back the next for a lovely meal. I have to say that the downstairs bar was very crowded compared to the spacious unstairs dining area. The pub employs a doorman to keep the plebs out, which was an encouraging sign.

Definitely worth a look.

White Horse Inn, Keswick

This pub is under a new licensee for the better. We called in for a beer after a particularly wet walk through the fells. The hospitality and beer were superb. We were so impressed we came back for dinner the following evening which was superb value for the money, with large portions of good pub grub.

We were there for the jazz band who at the time of writing play on Saturday nights. The music was more popular hits than jazz, which is great for my musical taste buds. We all had a such a great time that we had to wrench ourselves out to go back to the campsite.

This is a nice pub, with a landlord doing his best to undo all the wrong of the previous tennant. I do hope that they go from strength to strength.

Bankes Arms Hotel and Country Inn, Studland

2 couples ventured out from Swanage via Harrys Rock to arrive at this pub. We'd worked up a good thirst by this time, and were greeted with a very good selection of ales. We worked our way through 3 pints each, before going back home in the dark - the views of an illuminated Swanage in the dark are fantastic. I rate this pub for its beer alone.

Swan Hotel, Thaxted

A spacious pub which seems just at home serving food, as well as serving a decent pint of real ale. The draft Ruddles County is worth the journey alone. The landlady was particularly welcoming following a long walk round the local area.

The Farmhouse Inn, Dunmow

A nice country pub in a rural setting, with a comfortable interior. My father and I enjoyed the Mauldon Gold, my nephew enjoyed a huge child's portion of sausage and chips and my wife was particularly complimentary about the baguettes which were fresh and full of filling. Even my father couldn't grumble about the size of his sunday roast for the price. All in all a good find - recommended.

The Ship Inn, Dunwich

We walked the coastal path from Southwold to Dunwich and arrived at dusk. We were greeted by a fire in a large log burner, and tables and chairs scattered around the tiled floor.

The beer was first rate, the wine by the glass was enjoyed by the ladies (who are high maintenance and difficult to please), and the cosy nature of our surroundings lured us to staying for 3 pints.

I can't comment about the food, as our hosts were cooking, but we have vowed to return.

I must thank the landlord for retrieving my scarf, 3 pints on an empty stomache and I didn't have my wits about me.

Keep up the good work.

The Three Horseshoes, Felsted

A picturesque pub in a picturesque setting. A beer outside overlooking the green is a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Unfortunately when we tried it, the food didn't live up to expectation. The food was of poor quality (i.e. cheap) and was not cooked that well. The deep fried sausage baguette was not particularly well received by my wife. Shame - as the place has promise.

The White Hart, Dunmow

A nice village pub with plenty of character, horse brasses and what-not. It has its own brewery on site and the beers are of good quality, and of course are in tip top condition. The pub does food, but alas I've not had the opportunity to eat here yet, but it certainly looks good, and judging by the empty plates is well received. Worth a look if you're in the area.

The White Horse, Pleshey

A lovely find in picturesque Pleshey. My wife and I ventured out on our bicycles during a snow storm and stopped here to warm up. The staff were accomodating, the fire gloriously warm and coffee and tea lovely. The beer and food looked good, but alas we needed to get a move on whilst the snow had stopped.

I can appreciate the comments on here about the ruination of a local, but the bar area was not crowded when we arrived at 12.30pm on a Sunday. These pubs have to change to survive - either that or another gorgeous hostelry is lost to private residence.

The Compasses, Littley Green

A traditional pub in a tranquil setting. The pub itself has a flagstone floor, a half cellar and a traditional shelf system on the back wall and an open fire. It feels like stepping back to the sixties when you go inside. The beer is first rate, and the Huffers, as quaint Essex tradition are very good if you're really hungry. A good departure from the contrived Wetherspoons chain pubs.

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford

This pub seems to be going from strength to strength. There are always 4 real ales on tap - 2 of which are guest beers that get quite a turnover. Contrary to my previous post I have only ever been served a perfect pint. The pub has recently been redecorated so it looks clean and fresh. It's very much a regulars pub, but they're a friendly bunch. If you like real ale - give it a go!

The Flitch Of Bacon, Little Dunmow

A superb little country pub. The ales are well kept and there is usually a guest ale to try. The food is excellent and keeps us coming back for more every time.

The Star Inn, Good Easter

Sadly the Star Inn is no longer with us. It has been converted in to a house, still situated on the cross-roads.

Another country pub has bitten the dust.

RIP

The Bell, Purleigh

Been here twice and been disappointed twice. The beer was vinegary, the kitchen was about to close 2 pm which meant that the we could only order sandwiches and the view was obscured by undergrowth. The landlord was a little abrupt, and not at all welcoming. Not the country pub experience we wanted. Avoid.

The Rodney Inn, Little Baddow

A nice rural pub with large car park. Well worth the drive for the well kept range of real ales, and well priced no frills pub grub. The Rodney is a dying breed - keep up the good work.

The Railway Tavern, Chelmsford

The chalk board on the outside of the pub has always caught my attention with the range of beers offered. However, the smokey inside has always put me off. Thankfully the nanny state has intervened and I'm pleased to say that I've sampled many a nice pint of Black Sheep in a smoke free environment. The beer can sometimes be iffy, but the landlord knows his stuff. It's quite a regulars pub, so can be a bit imtimidating for outsiders. I recommend the pork scratchings. Worth a quick pint if you're waiting for a bus, train or lift!
