Robertson's 37 Bar, Edinburgh

I visited this small bar on the well known Rose Street, in Edinburgh city centre, on a cold January afternoon. All the beers on offer are keg with no cask beers at all. I had a pint of Bellhaven Bitter which was ok as far as keg beers go. Food is available from a limited menu, with things like soup & various toasties on offer.
There are three TVs all showing sports channels.

The Rose and Crown, Edinburgh

I visited this pub during a quiet Monday afternoon in late January. There are three handpumps but only two were in use. The Deuchars IPA was not available. There were two cask bitters from the Skye Brewery available, I had a taste of the blonde bitter Tiny Angels but it was not to my taste. I had a pint of Red Cuillin @ £3.90, a nice pint but not cheap. The pub was so quiet that there was no atmosphere but it's probably busier in the evening.

Mitre, Edinburgh

This is a lovely old pub full of character. Nice pint of Deuchars IPA. I think there were two other cask beers on sale but I can't remember their names. They also sell food, not cheap but a reasonably varied menu. I didn't try the food on my recent visit. I would definitely visit this pub again if I was in Edinburgh.

The Brinsop Country Inn, Westhoughton

Walking into the Brinsop is a bit like walking into someone's front room with all the Sofas. It was very quiet when I visited the pub on a wet Thursday evening. The bar staff are friendly & very polite. I thought that the prices are rather steep.
I would visit the Brinsop again possibly to try the food.

The Cross Guns, Westhoughton

This pub has now closed for good. Admiral have sold the building on condition that it can only be used as a restaurant or off- licence. It has been purchased by a local businessman & it is scheduled for demolition. A new building housing an IT business will replace it.

I hope that Punch & more recently Admiral Taverns are proud of themselves. Ten years ago this was the best pub in Westhoughton but corporate greed has finally killed this pub!

Robert Shaw, Westhoughton

This pub has improved since my last review in March 2010. There has been a new manager & lots of new bar staff. There is an ongoing problem with the cask bitter, it is served with a good head on it but within 5 minutes it is as flat as a fluke, resembling cold tea. This has been mentioned to the bar staff but as only one or two of them actually drink real ale comments fall on stoney ground.

Last night, Wednesday 23rd October was a normal night in the pub until I went to the bar to order my last drink at 11.55pm. This pub shuts at midnight so I was well within the advertised hours. I asked for a pint of bitter only to be told that the pub was closed. I asked to speak to Rory the duty manager, I informed him that there had been no bell at ''last orders or ''time''. He just stated that ''We are closed''. I asked him why he hadn't informed the customers in the pub as to why they were closing early. He replied ''Show me where it says that I have to inform you that we are closing early?''. I said to him ''That is disgraceful'' & walked away. As I was leaving the pub, I said to one of the bar staff (female), ''Please tell Rory that I will be reporting this to head office tomorrow''.

The Duke of York, Pomeroy

I have recently returned from another visit to The Duke of York. I spent last Friday & Saturday nights camped adjacent to the pub. I arrived mid-afternoon, Friday & immediately went into the pub. I received a warm welcome from the landlord & I decided to try the Unicorn cask bitter (4.2%). The Unicorn was on form & very drinkable. Over the weekend I found that after a few pints it becomes rather bland & lacking a bit of bant. It certainly doesn't taste like a 4.2% bitter. The alternative bitter was Hartley's XB (4.0%) which I only tried once. It is quite a nice drink but I still preferred the Unicorn.

The food at The Duke is always worth trying. On the Friday night I had the steak & ale pie with chips, which was excellent. To follow, I had the hot chocolate fudge cake which I thoroughly enjoyed. On the Saturday night I had sirloin steak with chips, onion rings & mushrooms. The steak was very tasty.

The Duke is very busy with passing trade at weekends. It deserves to be because the food is excellent & the beer is well kept. I hope to return during the summer of 2012.

Albert and The Lion, Blackpool

I visited this pub a couple of days ago on a Saturday tea time during the illuminations period. The pub was packed out with virtually every table occupied & people 2-3 deep at the bar waiting to be served. There were 6 bar staff behind the bar with only 4 actually serving customers. The other 2 were just loafing about trying to look busy. The manager was wandering around doing nothing.

There were only 4 cask ales available, Ruddles @ 1.85, Abbot Ale @ 2.35, Moorhouses Blond Witch @ 2.25 plus one other. I had one pint of Blond Witch which was good but it ran out & I had a pint of Ruddles. Ruddles normally seems a bit weak to me but on this occaision it was very good.

I would like to visit this pub again when it's not so busy but being in central Blackpool it's probably always busy.

The Duke of York, Pomeroy

I returned to the Duke of York once again last Sunday which was on the August bank holiday. The pub was very busy with the majority of customers dining. There was only one cask bitter on, that was Robinson's Unicorn which was on form. It would have been nice to see another bitter on hand pump.

The pub was fully booked for food from 4.00pm - 8.30pm but the landlord agreed to squeeze me in at some point. This turned out to be around 6.30pm. I was asked to go through to the restaurant side of the pub & I was given a table in the reception area. I had steak & kidney pie, chips & veg, followed by apple crumble & custard. I really enjoyed the meal & I can recommend the food. I then returned to the lounge bar for some more Unicorn.

The White Horse, Dover

I recently visited this pub late on a Sunday evening. I had intended to dine there but food is only served 12.00 - 5.00pm on a Sunday so I dined at Wetherspoons instead. This is a nice cosy pub with friendly locals who will happily chat with strangers passing through. I tried two cask bitters, one I have forgotten the name of but the other was Loddon's Ferrymaster which I really enjoyed. To me, 3.25 per pint for bitter is very expensive,

The Eight Bells, Dover

I visited thre Eight Bells recently on a Sunday night & I thought the place had improved since my previous visit. I was very hungry after a long journey & the White Horse doesn't serve food after 5pm on a Sunday. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food & that it was served hot. I consumed several pints of Courage Directors bitter @ 1.90 and it was excellent. The pub wasn't very busy & the staff were thinking of closing at 10.30pm. The selection of cask bitters was far better than at my local Wetherspoons.

The Duke of York, Pomeroy

Firstly, I would like to correct a mistake in my previous review of The Duke. It is in fact located on the A515 about 5 miles south east of Buxton & not on the A615 as stated.

I visited this pub on the weekenf of 3rd - 5th December 2010 & once again I was really impressed everything. The pub had been closed all week due to very heavy snowfall. The A515 only reopened on Friday 3rd December. The pub was warm & inviting with a large open fire. There were two cask bitters on offer, Robinson's Unicorn 4.2% & Dizzy Blonde 3.8% (Light Bitter). There is also Guinness, Strongbow cider & various lagers.

The food is excellent & I can particularly recommend the hot baguettes which come with a choice of fillings, the roast chicken & stuffing is very good but the roast beef is superb.

The Duke is still worth a visit for both food & drink.

This pub is now closed.

Robert Shaw, Westhoughton

I went to this pub recently on a mid week evening when it was quietish. I was looking forward to a pint of cask bitter & I was expecting a good choice. To my 'bitter' disappointment out of 12 hand pumps, 6 had signs on stating '' ??? bitter - coming soon'', 3 had the signs turned away from the customer because the barrel was empty, leaving only 3 bitters on sale. There was a choice of Abbott Ale & 2 straw coloured bitters which are not really to my taste.

There is absloutely no atmosphere in this pub, it just isn't like a proper pub. The staff were a mixed bunch, 2 friendly, 1 ok & 1 miserable person with no sense of humour whatsoever.

I won't be rushing back to the Robert Shaw.

The Duke of York, Pomeroy

The Duke of York is located in the hamlet of Pomeroy on the A615 about 5 miles south east of Buxton. The pub is on Sterndale Moor a bleak, windswept spot with stunning views over the Derbyshire countryside.

The landlord & staff are friendly & welcome customers with a smile. This is a Robinsons pub so the standard bitter is Unicorn. There will be one or two guest bitters on as well. On entering the pub, the main bar is to the left with the dining room to the right. I can highly recommend the food which is excellent.

I visited the pub during the first weekend of December 2009 but the B.I.T.E. team have only just added it to the website. Even in this remote location the pub has it's 'regulars' as well as passing trade & day trippers. In winter there is a roaring log fire at the far end of the bar which gives a homely feel to the place.

Overall, this is a welcoming pub with good beer & great food. Try it for yourself & see.

The Lamb Inn, Rainton

This village pub has an open plan layout which as previously reported has the bar very close to the front door. Apparently there are plans to move the bar back by several feet to offer more room near the door. The landlord, bar staff & locals were friendly. Two cask bitters were on offer at Saturday lunchtime, Golden Sheep & Barnsley bitter. The Barnsley was excellent. I returned on Sunday luch time & had one pint of Barnsley which was warm & rather insipid having been standing in the pump/pipeline for some time.

There were diners in the pub both days & comments on the food seemed favourable. The local cricket team frequent this pub. The pub is open all day Saturday & Sunday but closes between lunchtime & evening sessions during the week.

The Bay Horse Inn, Rainton

This is a traditional cosy village pub open Sunday lunch & every evening. Excellent home cooked food served 12.00 - 2.00pm & 6.30 - 9.00pm. Cask beers on offer were Blacksheep, Tetley's & Salamander Ace Bar. The Ace Bar ran out & was replaced by Shepherd Neame's Spitfire. I didn't try the pale Ace Bar but all the other were well kept & were crystal clear. There is also John Smith's smooth bitter, Guinness & Foster's lager on sale. The landlord/landlady, staff & locals were friendly towards visitors & made them feel welcome.

The Victoria Bar, Glasgow

As an Englishman visiting Glasgow I always found this bar to the friendliest in the Queen's Park/Victoria Road area. The 70/- beer is ok but I would have much prefered a cask beer but unfortunately that is quite rare in Scotland.

12 Sep 2009 03:35

The White Lion Hotel, Westhoughton

A nice friendly pub with Holts's bitter at only 1.80 per pint.

20 Aug 2009 03:58

The White Horse Tavern, Westhoughton

Anyone who likes proper beer ie. cask should avoid this pub . All the beer on offer is keg/nitro keg. There are only two bitters, Boddingtons & John Smiths Smoothflow. The Smiths is awful & is an extortionate 2.55 per pint which is well above average price for Westhoughton.
