The Ship, Soho

Sadly now turned into a bland identikit pub with zero personality. R.I.P The Ship.

The Crown, St Albans

Now open after refurb. A very different place with very different clientele now. Emphasis very much on food I would say. Good range of ale when I visited though with the bar staff very friendly and efficient. Screens showing sport still there but more as a token compromise rather than a focus.

The Tower Tavern, Fitzrovia

Went in one lunchtime for a pint. Bit unremarkable to be honest and nothing to set it apart from anywhere else in the neighbourhood apart from it having the general sense of a student union bar. That said , no complaints with service or beer quality & would pop in again if nearby.

The Ship, Soho

My favourite West End haunt without doubt. An admittedly unremarkable beer selection but it more than makes up for that with a welcome, alternative atmosphere and an anti-bland music selection. A refuge against an increasingly gentrified range of cheek by jowl boutique coffee sellers and extortionately priced hair cutters. Long live The Ship.

The Mill, Cambridge

Popped in here when staying in the hotel a little further along the road. Thought the place was brilliant and the Porter I tried was excellent. The food menu seemed to offer enough options to satisfy most. Would call in again if passing.

The Goat, St Albans

A real find this place. Deceptively large but cosy and welcoming. We called in for one but stayed for a few. Recommended.

The Garibaldi, St Albans

Quite a small but cosy pub & we really enjoyed our visit here for Sunday lunch. The food & service was great as was the HSB. Will return without question.

The Hope, Carshalton

Outstanding.

The Mermaid, St Albans

A great find this one. I've recently moved to St Albans from Kentish Town & was missing The Southampton Arms greatly! This will fill the void no end. Great range, including mild & porter when I visited. Bar staff knew their stuff and were friendly. Top marks - keep it up!

The Lower Red Lion, St Albans

Excellent pub. Roaring fire on the go when we visited on a Saturday afternoon and a good range of ale. Bar staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Bar 62, St Albans

This is my new local after moving to the area. Called in on a Saturday lunch time & thought the staff, service and place itself were good. No real ale that I could see however & it did seem slightly pricey. Overall though would go again, looks busy in the evenings on my walk home from work.

The Elephant Inn, North Finchley

Cracking pub and the best I've been to in the area. One side has numerous TV's so good for football watching if thats your thing. The other side however is TV free and so you can have a chilled out pint regardless of whats on. The food is exceptional and the usual Fullers offerings are present & seemed well kept. I'll definitely be making the trip up here again soon.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

Called in for midweek lunch after a stroll around town. The Beef and Abbott Ale pie was excellent and served to my table after only a 15 mins wait. The Black Cab Stout was also very well kept and enjoyable. As others have said, a pretty unremarkable pub layout wise but does the job. I would visit again if in the area.

The Ship Tavern, Holborn

A bit of a gem this. Visited on Friday afternoon just before the post work rush decended and I thought the place was brilliant. Excellent pint of Old Peculiar and a cosy, warm environment in which to drink it. Top stuff!

The Lion and Unicorn, Kentish Town

Been in here twice now, once for ale the second for a bite to eat. Enjoyed the place, thought it was bright and welcoming. Large outside areas, which are a rariety around these parts, no doubt will be a major draw in the Summer months. Overall a welcome addition to the area.

The Marquis of Granby, Fitzrovia

Called in for a lunchtime pint and the place was alright. I can imagine after work it becomes slightly messy in there as there isnt a lot of room to move but it suited the few people in there on my visit. The Lia Fail was excellent.

The Black Horse Inn, Amberley

Stayed in a holiday cottage nearby and enjoyed our visit to The Black Horse. The ale was well kept and reasonably priced. The interior is pretty bland and modern but the roaring log fire and stunning views more than made up for that.

The Museum Tavern, Bloomsbury

Called in for a lunchtime pint and found the place to be very welcoming. Naturally very busy with people spilling out of the museum but I think the multi-national clientele is a bonus, rather than a negative. The Old Peculiar was on top form and would recommend if you're in the area.

The Vine, Kentish Town

I haven't eaten in here since the refurb but in terms of ale and decor then its a big thumbs up from me. The place is much more welcoming for people just wanting a pint. Handy if The Southampton is too mobbed to handle. All the ale I've tried so far has been well kept and the bar staff are friendly and quick to serve.

The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield

Always on my itinerary when I come back home to Manchester. The range of ale is always good and well kept. Add to that the huge range of spirits & its a winner in my book. The atmosphere is relaxed & the decor & layout make for a warm & cosy evening on winter nights. A proper institution and long may it continue.

Sam's Chop House, Manchester

Called in to shelter from a downpour on Monday lunchtime and the place was heaving with Christmas week drinkers. Great atmosphere and attentive barstaff. A bit on the cosy side if its busy but that sort of adds to the place. The JW Lees Supernova I had was excellent.

20 Dec 2011 16:05

The Crown, St Albans

Called in for a pint (and to defrost) after watching St Albans City FC. The Black Sheep was good but the range of ales was limited. More of a lager & footy pub so, if thats what you're after, you'll not be disappointed.

20 Dec 2011 16:02

The Blacksmiths Arms, St Albans

Busy pub showing sports but had a decent range of ale when I visited. The staff were quick to serve and knowledgeable in terms of the ale they offered.

20 Dec 2011 15:58

The Boot, St Albans

Dropped in here on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. The place was quite busy but the bar staff were efficient and quick to serve. A good range of ales on offer & the Porter I tasted was excellent. A warm & cosy feel to the place which was most welcome given the crowds and cold outside.

20 Dec 2011 15:56

The Doric Arch, Euston

Always pop into here if I'm in the area. Sometimes gets overly busy as you'd expect at peak travel times but otherwise, worth it for the excellent Black Cab Stout.

25 Nov 2011 16:25

The Flag, Watford

Nice enough place in terms of size and location, but when we visited the ale and people in there were both dreadful. Some character tried to start on me for queue jumping at the bar, despite me waiting for a good 5 minutes prior to him swanning up to stand next to me. Ideal venue if you like a little "edge" to your drinking, otherwise go elsewhere.

25 Nov 2011 16:08

Bar Bodega, Watford

Very nice set up & very chilled out atmosphere. A lot of people in here were eating when we visited but we managed to bag a table easily enough. Drinks were on the pricey side but just about worth it if you're only staying for one or two.

25 Nov 2011 16:00

The Royal Oak Hotel, Didsbury

Watch out if you're paying with a 20 note at the bar in this place. Went in here a couple of weeks ago & handed over a twenty but got change for a tenner. After pointing this out immediately to the barmaid she had a word with the lad in charge who said he'd have to do a 'till check'. 10 minutes later he came back & told me the till was correct & had been so for the last 3 months (not sure what relevence that was) so I was lying. As I only had a twenty note in my wallet when I walked in, I assured him I wasn't but it fell on deaf ears & that was that. Be warned.
