The Philharmonic, Liverpool

I used to visit this pub a lot, but stopped some time ago because of the dramatic decline in the quality of its beer. (CAMRA are presumably of like mind, as the place is no longer in the Good Beer Guide).
Against my better judgement, I was persuaded to go there last Friday night. The two beers I tried were scarcely drinkable and around half of the handpumps had their clips turned round (indicating that the beers weren't on).
This pub is spectacular - of course it is - but it needs to be much better run before I'll consider going back.

The Dispensary, Liverpool

By common consent, this is the best pub in Liverpool city centre for beer. If you want to enhance your experience of the place by getting on with Dave, it's quite simple - visit frequently, drink lots of his beer, agree with everything he says (even when you haven't the faintest idea what he's on about), and do as you're told. I can well understand why some people aren't comfortable with this. Pauline (who, as has already been pointed out, is the actual licensee and Dave's wife) couldn't be nicer.

The Angel, Manchester

There are some pretty good pubs in the 'Northern Quarter', and this is arguably the best. Proper pub atmosphere and proper (reasonably-priced) beer.

The Crown Inn, Stockport

I moved out of the area several years ago, and this pub is the main reason I return to Stockport so frequently. In my experience, one of the very best pubs anywhere.

Tiviot, Stockport

The 'Tivvy' closed in late 2013 and is much missed. Like many of Robinson's less-fashionable pubs, it was a victim of chronic under-investment and the building now looks as if it will fall down before they get chance to knock it down.

The Bakers Vaults, Stockport

The Baker's closed in early 2014. The brewery have apparently been considering reopening the place, but as Stockport is no longer posh enough for Robinson's pubs, I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Nelson, New Brighton

How this place has kept its 'Cask Marque' accreditation is beyond me. If you must drink here, stick to lager and be prepared for a long wait at the bar, even if the pub's not busy.

Clairville, Wallasey

Another turkey from J D Wetherspoon plc (posh licensed caffs). Just the place if you don't mind what you're drinking (and how long you wait to get served with it) or you want to take your noisy, feral kids out for some cheap food. If this is a 'pub', it's a use of the word I've not encountered before.

Stanleys Cask, Wallasey

A friendly local, well run by a landlady who's doing her level best to sell interesting beers, despite being hamstrung by the drinker's curse (the pubco beer list!). The frequent live music evenings are very popular and seem to be of pretty good quality.

The Queens Royal, New Brighton

The beer is pretty well-kept, tends to be from NW micros, and is competitively-priced for the area (can't comment about wine!), all of which make it about the best bet for trad beer lovers in New Brighton. The food is worth trying. However, the place doesn't have much atmosphere - too many hard surfaces make it 'clattery' and rather uncongenial. It also smells constantly of food, whether the doors to the restaurant are left open or not. In common with many food-led operations, the service can be distinctly patchy, a situation not helped by the cluelessness of some of the staff.
