The White Dog, Ewhurst Green

The White Dog is a lovely pub in an idyllic setting. We popped in for a few drinks over the weekend and found the staff and punters very friendly. Busy on a Friday night which is always a good sign. There was a pool table there too in a separate room if that takes your fancy.

Cross Inn, Staplecross

The Cross Inn is a lovely pub and we were made to feel very welcome when we popped in for a couple of drinks at the weekend. We were lucky enough to grab the seat by the welcoming fire. I picked the wrong pint which was on its way out and upon returning, it was replaced without any problems.

The Salehurst Halt, Robertsbridge

The Salehurst Halt is a glorious pub! We popped in on a walk and sat out in the sunny garden as it was such a nice day but would have been equally happy to be inside. The staff were most welcoming and we popped back in for another on our way back. Cheers!

The Ostrich Hotel, Robertsbridge

The Ostrich Hotel is like stepping back in time. The interior decor is to be seen to be believed. This is a very nice pub with a lovely ‘tropical’ garden surrounded by palm trees. Very friendly staff.

Palk Arms, Hennock

What a great find! The Palk Arms in Hannock has been on my list of pubs to visit in Dartmoor for a long time and it did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, we were treated kindly by friendly locals and staff alike. The small front bar is very cosy, and the restaurant/bar areas to the back have the most amazing views of Dartmoor. There's also a lovely garden but I didn't see any pool table. The place is full of quirkiness and interesting memorabilia from the local mine, which I believe closed in the 50s. I had the Jail Ale which is a strong, tasty pint. We liked the place so much, we returned the following day with Mother!

The Kings Head, Bexley

The Kings Head deserves a much higher rating than it currently has. We popped in here on a recent Thursday evening to have a quick pint before going for a meal in a local restaurant. The interior is very pleasant as was the atmosphere. The landlord could not have been more welcoming or generous even knowing that we were only staying for the one. I had the Golden Hen which was delicious. Highly recommended!

13 Feb 2015 14:26

The George Inn, Frant

The George Inn is a lovely village pub with two bars and a very nice garden. The beers available were Doombar and Harvey's Best which was fine. Although tucked off the main road, it is well worth finding.

14 Jul 2014 09:33

The Nevill Crest and Gun, Eridge Green

The Nevill Crest and Gun is a wonderful large pub set back from the busy A26. The gardens are lovely, but the one to the rear is quieter due to less traffic noise. The interior is very nice and the Tonbridge Coppernob I tried was excellent. As previous posters have noted, this a very foody pub, but it is still a pub.

14 Jul 2014 09:31

The Blue Ship, The Haven

The Blue Ship is a lovely little pub tucked away off the beaten track. Although it appears to be a Badger pub, there didn't appear to be any of the normal Badger ales on gravity when we visited, but the one I tried was gorgeous. We sat in a beautiful garden until it started to rain and then in pleasant surrounds inside. The landlord was very friendly and polite.

14 Jul 2014 09:26

The Huntsman, Eridge Green

What a fantastic pub! Loads of character and a great atmosphere. Everyone was really friendly and there was a great buzz about the place when we visited on a Friday night. Beers were top notch too. A hard place to leave – we will definitely be back!

Cornerstone Cafe Bar, St Peter Port

Fabulous pub! We were over here from the mainland with a group of supporters prior to our game against Guernsey RFC. The place has a lovely atmosphere and landlord, staff and locals were all very friendly. The beer was great – I was drinking Olde Trip. Highly recommended.

18 Feb 2014 09:49

The Victoria, Bermondsey

All I can do is reiterate what others have said here that The Victoria is a lovely old boozer. We stopped here before a bit of scoff at Manze's and found the landlord to be simply charming. When we eventually left, it felt like we had made a true friend. It really is worth coming here as it was such a friendly establishment. Well worth the current 8.5 score on BITE that it has.

27 Jan 2014 09:33

Simon The Tanner, London

I have to admit that I was hesitant about going here, thinking it might be on the yuppie side, but this was totally unfounded. What an amazing selection of beers! They even had a black cask lager! The guy behind the bar was very friendly, and above all, he was extremely knowledgeable about the beers on offer. I have no idea why this place has three separate entries on BITE. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

27 Jan 2014 09:27

The Royal Oak, Borough

What an interesting pub! I love little quirky things about places and the one here is that you can walk through the bar to go to the other half of the building. Lovely architecture and Harveys beers. I had the mild which was tip top. There was a lovely, relaxed atmosphere on our recent visit.

27 Jan 2014 09:12

The Old Kings Head, Borough

We stayed here for a couple of hours on an early Saturday night. The place was absolutely buzzing with staff and punters a really friendly bunch. Will definitely be back for more.

27 Jan 2014 09:09

The Padwell Arms, Seal

We walked here on a sunny Sunday and found the place to be full of charm. The landlord was most accommodating, and definitely on top of his beers as two were changed whilst we were there, and one not deemed quite ready due to more settling required. I had the Tonbridge Traditional which was great. Nice cheap round. Saw a "small" portion of chips come out of the kitchen which was massive. As always, take previous 'foody' reviews with a pinch of salt. The Padwell Arms is a lovely characteristic pub, well worth the visit!

15 Jan 2014 16:28

The Red Lion, Stodmarsh

I am most pleased to announce that Robert is back at The Red Lion in Stodmarsh. His bubbly personality only adds to the fabulous atmosphere in what must be one of Britain's finest pubs. The establishment is full of olde worlde character and charm. Most illuminating!

27 Aug 2013 11:56

Royal Oak, Fritham

What a gem of a pub! The Royal Oak in Fritham is well worth searching for. We chose to visit in the evening, as we hoped (correctly) it would be quieter than during the day. It is quite a small pub which gives it great character, but I’m sure it can get very busy. I was drinking the Flack’s Double Drop, which was superb.

29 May 2013 10:47

The Cuckoo Inn, Hamptworth

This is one of my favourite, all-time pubs. This weekend, they had a beer festival, with live music in the garden. I wish all pubs were like this. Needless to say, the beer was exceptional. If you have not visited this amazing pub, you’re missing out. Full of character with friendly staff.

29 May 2013 10:34

New Forest Inn, Emery Down

This is a great pub in one of the loveliest villages in the New Forest. Understandably it will get busy at times, but I feel the two comments below do not justify the place (some people…) This weekend, we did not eat but just drank at the bar, propped up on two milk churns for stools, talking to the very friendly staff. The decor was lovely and garden looked inviting. This place is well worth a visit, but it might be advised to choose your timing or book ahead as it becomes very popular. I drank the Flack's Double Drop which was outstanding. We have eaten here before and remember the food fondly. We look forward to our next visit.

29 May 2013 10:25

The Olde George Inn, Shoreham

This is a lovely pub! We popped in here whilst walking to Otford along the Darent Valley, which is a nice walk in itself. They had a gorgeous coal fire warming the place and a nice selection of ales. I can't understand the low rating – must be old scores from previous tenants.
The bar staff were charming and there was a great ambience here. Will be back!

13 Nov 2012 12:46

The Gun Inn, Heathfield

Lovely pub in a nice location. We were made to feel most welcome even though we were only there for drinks. I was drinking TT Landlord perfect! We sat out the front one night and in the large garden on another both were great.

31 Jul 2012 14:18

The Six Bells, Chiddingly

What an amazing pub! Situated in the beautiful village of Chiddingly, this pub has a gorgeous interior (not too) cluttered with old enamel signs etc which may be a bit much for some but added to the interest for me. Nice and cosy, I could have spent all day there. We arrived during the last weekend in July which corresponded with The Bongo Bash being held in the adjacent field which was basically a bunch of bikers having fun. They were fine but may have put off some. Apparently this has been a biker pub for some years, but you wouldnt really notice it. I think there is Folk & Blues here as well. Well worth a visit!

31 Jul 2012 14:17

The Yew Tree, Arlington

Lovely pub in a quaint village. Mainly foody with two small bar areas for drinking. We sat out the front and watched the world stroll by. Beautiful.

31 Jul 2012 14:15

The Kings Head, East Hoathly

What a find! A lovely country pub with its own micro brewery next door. Sit out the front and watch the world pass by or in the lovely walled garden out the back and watch the pet rabbits and ducks. A varying range of ales on sale with a new one every month. The two I tried were lovely. Well worth finding.

31 Jul 2012 14:14

The Rose Cottage Inn, Polegate

Firstly, this inn is in Alciston rather than Polegate, however, what a lovely pub! Well worth a visit after a walk on The Downs. Exquisite surroundings and well kept beer. Very popular with the elders mid-week lunch time, but lots of nice tables outside. A genuinely nice pub.

31 Jul 2012 14:13

The Cricketers Arms, Berwick

I wholeheartedly agree with ParsonDarby, five comments below. We sat in the garden on a midweek July afternoon and it was glorious (if busy) and what a garden! Any pub that pours ale straight from the cask is a winner in my book. Will definitely be back if walking The Downs again in this, glorious part of the world.

31 Jul 2012 14:11

The Star Inn, Alfriston

This is not a pub its a hotel! I seldom leave bad reviews (please feel free to check), but this place was simply awful. We paid 7.90 for a pint of beer and Vodka and soda. My girlfriend wanted to smoke a cigarette in a garden rather than on the street frontage and when we enquired about the garden, we were told it was further through the building down five (!) corridors. Since the front bar was very nice, I thought the rest might prove so... the deeper we got, the more the place turned into a corporate hospitality unit. When we finally found the narrow, lifeless, walled garden, it turned out to be non-smoking! Thanks guys. Go to The Smugglers which is a really nice PUB.

31 Jul 2012 14:10

George Inn, Alfriston

This place was shut on a sunny, July Saturday afternoon... what! Go to The Smugglers if you want a nice pub in Alfriston. Skip The Star (big mistake). Sorry to be negative, but really... shut!

31 Jul 2012 14:08

Ye Olde Smugglers Inn, Alfriston

What a relief to find a nice pub in Alfriston after a disastrous time in The Star and discovering The George was shut on a Saturday afternoon in July. The Smugglers has a rally nice interior and the beer and staff were most pleasant. If you have the energy, walk down along the river and up to The White Horse (chalk engraving) for fabulous views.

31 Jul 2012 14:06

The Plough and Harrow, Litlington

A pleasant pub with comfy garden serving local ales. The landlord was very kind on my visit, explaining the quality of each of the beers. Theres a fabulous walk from here up to the White Horse chalk engraving and back through Alfriston if youre keen.

31 Jul 2012 14:03

The Old Oak, Caneheath

Nice pub with lovely garden and Harveys on fine form. If youre a fan of pub games, ask for the Toad-In-The-Hole!

31 Jul 2012 14:03

The Fitzwalter Arms, Goodnestone

This amazing building is a fine pub with bar billiards, a small telly and sells Hurlimann. The guy behind the bar was very friendly and accommodating by putting the rugby on for us. Theres a lovely, cozy feeling inside. Highly recommended. Don't be put off by the low rating, it should be much higher.

27 Jun 2012 17:56

Half Moon and Seven Stars, Canterbury

This is an incredibly friendly local set in the Kentish village of Preston. Here we found great chat, a pool table and a good (but not too loud) juke box if thats your thing. The landlord was so nice he even gave us a lift back to where we were staying. Top man!

27 Jun 2012 17:54

The Fordwich Arms, Fordwich

Lovely pub in a lovely town. It has a garden just on the river, but I preferred the bar with its amazing wallpaper! I was drinking the Bass Mild which was in excellent condition and served with a smile. Top notch.

27 Jun 2012 17:51

The Red Lion, Stodmarsh

I come here as often as possible but recently found that Robert, the charismatic innkeeper no longer runs the establishment. My immediate worries were soon allayed as he has passed The Red Lion over to his daughter who runs it superbly. The beer is in great nick and prices for beer and food very reasonable. One of Britains best pubs and I dont say that lightly.

27 Jun 2012 17:51

The Saddle Inn, Douglas

We spent a week in Douglas when over for the TT and found The Saddle Inn to be a great little harbour-side pub with old world charm. Theres not many of these left today. We were treated really kindly by all the locals and there was a great atmosphere with the added bonus of a tiny pool room. Sadly I didnt get on with any of the local ales, but the ones I did try were in good condition. Just how a pub should be.

12 Jun 2012 15:58

The Rovers Return, Douglas

What a great place! I was over to Douglas with my girlfriend for the TT and found this to be the jolliest place we came across. The bar staff, locals and TT folk themselves were all great company and we had such a laugh here every night. A fascinating building with lots of individual bars and a covered area outside in the spacious, cobbled alley added to its character. Excellent selection of beers and a friendly, biker kind of crowd. Set down by the marina where all our favourite pubs were found.

12 Jun 2012 15:55

The Old Market Inn, Douglas

Weve just come back from a week in Douglas whilst over for the TT. The Old Market Inn is a fascinating pub which cant have changed much in many years and is set just back from the harbour/marina. The front room felt more like a lounge bar and back room more like the public bar with many locals happily drinking in the corridor between the two which had little shelves strategically placed to hold a pint. The tiny bar was perfectly placed to dispense to all areas and served nice and cheap beer. We had friendly chat with everyone we met. Interesting opening hours :)

12 Jun 2012 15:53

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Marsh Green

What a cracking pub!
We popped in for a couple of pints and I didn't want to leave. I was drinking Harveys Lewes Castle Brown Ale which was superb. The building has a lovely, warm feel to it and a nicely tucked away sports bar for those of interest. This did not detract in any way from the rest of the pub. We chose to sit in the garden to the rear which is massive. The staff were very pleasant.

22 Aug 2011 10:58

The Four Elms Inn, Four Elms

Sadly this pub is now closed.
We popped in for a pint on Saturday 20th August to be told by the landlady that the pub was closing indefinitely.

22 Aug 2011 10:51

The King Henry VIII Inn, Hever

This is a lovely pub and a fascinating building full of olde worlde charm. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and there is a lovely garden with huge duck pond. I would happily return.

1 Aug 2011 15:07

The Castle Inn, Chiddingstone

This place has gone up in my esteem! I didnt realise on my last visit what a beautiful garden this pub has. The Larkins was as good as before and there is also a kind of serving hatch to the outdoor area which can save having to tramp back into the pub for more drinks.

1 Aug 2011 15:02

The Smack, Whitstable

I'm glad to report that we popped into The Smack recently on a wet Saturday and found the place to be exceptionally clean and tidy.
This place is a hidden gem full of character and characters! We always go to The Smack when visiting Whitstable and will continue to do so.

19 Jul 2011 12:44

The Rock, Chiddingstone Hoath

The Rock in Chiddingstone Hoath is a gorgeous little pub set in the Kentish countryside. A beautiful little building seen from the outside and upon entering, the bar area has a stone floor characteristically worn where locals have stood in places through the ages of time. The beer on tap was Larkins and very nice, too. I even managed to have a go at swinging the ring onto the bulls nose, and if this intrigues you, visit this fabulous pub to find out what it is for yourself! We were made to feel most welcome and the locals drinking there seemed very friendly. Well definitely go out of our way to come back here again. Top marks!

27 Jun 2011 10:26

The Castle Inn, Chiddingstone

The Castle Inn at Chiddingstone is a lovely building set in a beautiful village not far from Penshurst. I had a pint of Larkins which was fine and a game of bar skittles which was fun. Nice, friendly service in this pub in a gorgeous part of Kent.

27 Jun 2011 10:24

Plough, Borough Green

We walked here on Sunday and liked what we saw. Behind the bar was a charming landlady and on it a free selection of Sunday bar snacks for the pleasure of punters. I had a lovely slice of quiche, a pint of Thwaites Original and a quick game of pool. Nice atmosphere and great location. Well worth finding.

20 Jun 2011 10:49

The Golding Hop, Plaxtol

This is the second time we have visited this lovely little pub. This time the landlord was very pleasant. The place is charming and off the beaten track with an unusual range of beers. We only stopped for one but managed to fit in a quick game of bar billiards. Without a doubt, wed come back again.

20 Jun 2011 10:45

The Harrow Inn, Ightham Common

We started a walk from here at the weekend and found the place to be a lovely little pub with a congenial landlord. Gravesend Shrimpers on tap was outstanding. Already looking forward to our next visit.

20 Jun 2011 10:44

Queens Arms, Edenbridge

We popped in here for a quick one on Sunday and the place is happily alive and kicking, currently being opened by a keen bunch of volunteers now Elsie is too elderly to manage (she did put a brief appearance in though). The beer on tap was Adnams and the interior of the two-bar building unchanged in the last century or so. The Queens Head is a unique, friendly pub and long may it continue to be so.

6 Jun 2011 09:32

The Old House, Ightham

We managed to dodge most of the rain on Sunday and pop in for a quick one at this hidden gem of a pub. The Skrimpers wasn't ready, so I had a pint of Stag absolutely marvelous! All poured from gravity in a room behind the bar. There was a great selection of ales here and a fabulous selection of chatty locals. Exactly how a pub should be.

6 Jun 2011 09:31

The Black Horse, Monks Horton

The Black Horse in Monks Horton (or Broad Street on some maps) is a nice country pub in this part of Kent. We popped in briefly whilst walking locally and enjoyed the beer on offer and a chance to play the Bar Billiards there which is always worthy a fun game.

1 Jun 2011 15:42

The Tiger Inn, Stowting

We made our way to The Tiger Inn whilst walking a part of The North Downs Way recently. Sitting in a lovely front bar we enjoyed a couple of well kept pints served by very friendly staff. The Tiger seems like a very popular place to eat with many people arriving and lots of reserved tables. Well worth tracking down if youre nearby.

1 Jun 2011 15:41

The Duck Inn, Bridge

The Duck Inn at Pett Bottom is a gorgeous country pub nestling close to the top of the North Downs near Canterbury. We were lucky enough to stumble into their beer festival whilst walking in the area which added to the enjoyment of our recent visit. Friendly staff and locals with a good selection of beer helps to make The Duck Inn a place well worth visiting.

1 Jun 2011 15:40

The Hop Pocket, Bossingham

The Hop Pocket is a well presented pub tucked away in the village of Bossingham. Nice decor inside coupled with friendly staff and locals made for a very pleasant visit whilst walking locally recently. I was drinking a well kept pint of Seasalter.

1 Jun 2011 15:37

The Rose and Crown, Stelling Minnis

This is a lovely pub tucked away off the main road. Stewart, the landlord, his staff and the locals made us feel very welcome. Theres even a campsite (no showers) next door run by the pub at very reasonable prices. Well worth finding off the beaten track. From all accounts The Rose & Crown is a very popular, community pub welcoming visitors alike. Perched on top of the North Downs, there is plenty of good walking territory from here nearby. The Goachers kept my thirst well quenched and we would definitely revisit.

1 Jun 2011 15:36

Timber Batts Inn, Bodsham

This is an elegant gastro pub settled in a lovely part of rural Kent. We stopped in here whilst walking and did feel slightly out of place compared to the well-heeled locals but the bar manager was very polite and the lovely pint of Woodfordes Wherry he served made up for any ill feelings. Id like to come back and eat here one day.

23 May 2011 16:23

The Bowl Inn, Hastingleigh

This is a fabulous pub in a lovely Kentish village perched on top of the North Downs. The landlord was a really funny guy and most helpful with my walking ideas. The beer was equally fine. The interior is lovely and the best bit is the small old public bar at the front which has been extremely well done up like an American 8-ball pool parlour with one table in the middle. The garden is great and dog very friendly. Will definitely return. PS there is a good beer festival here, too.

23 May 2011 16:21

Honest Miller, Brook

This is a charming pub in an equally charming village on the foot of the North Downs and some great walking country. The Doombar I had was fine and service pleasant. The interior of the pub and garden were both pleasing.

23 May 2011 16:20

The Bottle House, Penshurst

We stopped here at the weekend for a quick pint of Larkins and found the place and service to be wonderful. Isn't it a shame that some people are so ready to criticise?

19 May 2011 09:51

Chafford Arms, Fordcombe

We dropped in here whilst walking last weekend, and although the place was quiet, the pint of Larkins I had was fine and the views from the garden would be very hard to beat. Well worth stopping by.

19 May 2011 09:41

The George and Dragon, Speldhurst

We popped in here whilst walking last week and had a couple of well kept pints of Larkins in the tiny snug bar at the front. This is definitely a more food-orientated pub, but we were in no-way made to feel unwelcome, in fact, just the opposite. I have eaten here twice before and both times were excellent. Highly recommended (especially to eat) and I look forward to returning soon.

19 May 2011 09:34

The Rising Sun, Kemsing

I love this place! Im afraid Ive not got much to add other than agreement with the previous review. If clinical hygiene is your style, prob best to pass on by. But if youre after oodles of character, a real pub atmosphere & smell, cheap-as-you-like rounds in a gorgeous flint and brick building nestling in a great country setting, then do your best to find The Rising Sun near Kemsing. Theres even a 40-year old parrot to keep you company! So many people use these forums to have a dig at places after a visit when they wouldnt dream of saying anything at the time you know who they are! This is a great pub to search out and if you dont like it, well, have a moan it wont stop the rest of us enjoying whats on offer.

4 May 2011 16:01

The Fox and Hounds, Romney Street

Yet another hidden gem tucked away on this part of the North Downs. Its well worth tracking down The Fox & Hounds as its a wonderful building in a charming setting selling good beer with a nice, friendly service. I had the Betty Stoggs and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this establishment to anyone in search of a really good pub.

4 May 2011 16:00

The Castle Inn Hotel, Lydford

This is an amazing place with one of the best bars Ive stepped into to in ages. Oozing charm and history I only wish we had time to stay longer. Well worth a detour to find.

4 May 2011 14:36

The Devil's Stone Inn, Shebbear

A cracking pub set in the depths of Devon full of charm. With a huge garden to the rear and great service from the bar, we would definitely visit again.

4 May 2011 14:34

Half Moon Inn, Sheepwash

We took a lovely walk here over the recent long weekend in this charming corner of Devon. With a sun-trap in the square at the front of the pub and good beer to drink, we found it hard to leave. Look forward to returning.

4 May 2011 14:31

The Torridge Inn, Black Torrington

This is a lovely little pub in the middle of the village of Black Torrington. The front bar appeared full of charm but we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the weather and sit in the nice garden to the rear. We were served good beer with even better manners. Highly recommended.

4 May 2011 14:30

The Greyhound Inn, Woodbridge

Lovely pub in a great setting with a pleasant garden. The landlord was very friendly and the beer excellent when we visited at Easter.

4 May 2011 14:11

The Ship Inn, Blaxhall

When we visited at Easter, we were lucky enough to be able to sit out at the front and soak up the sun and enjoy the views at this lovely rural pub. The staff and locals were charming and the beer was fine.

4 May 2011 14:10

The White Horse, Easton

An absolute gem of a pub set in one of the nicest places we visited over the Easter break. Approaching the gorgeous front of the building sit two lovely benches to relax at in the sun with more in the garden to the rear. The interior was equally charming and the service of the landlord and staff exemplary. The beer was excellent and although I did not try the food, Im sure it would live up to the standard set by everything else.

4 May 2011 14:07

The Kings Head, Orford

This is a nice pub with plenty of benches spread along the south-facing exterior for good-weather usage. The service and beer was fine when we visited at Easter.

4 May 2011 14:06

The Jolly Sailor, Orford

This is a fascinating pub set in the delightful town of Orford. When we visited at Easter, we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the weather outside in the garden but dont worry if the weather is bad, the interior of the building is charming. The beer was fine with descent service and prices. As with others, I took advantage of a lovely drop of Oyster stout.

4 May 2011 14:04

The Oyster Inn, Butley

A delightful pub full of charm serving good beer to boot. Would definitely recommend.

4 May 2011 14:01

The Swan Inn, Alderton

We visited this pub at Easter and found it nice and cosy serving good beer. With an integral Indian take-away, what could possibly be better?

4 May 2011 14:00

The Plough, Sutton

This pub appears to have a new lease of life. When we visited at Easter the place was very clean and tidy with friendly staff. The beer and food were fine, but it doesnt seem to be a drinking pub with the layout arranged predominantly for eating with a very small bar area which was very awkward to get served at if more than a couple of people were standing there. Having said that, the few locals were great company and the garden lovely.

4 May 2011 13:59

The Sorrel Horse, Shottisham

This is a gorgeous pub set in an equally nice village. The beer is gravity fed and kept well. I was drinking Woodfordes Wherry but there was the usual descent Adnams amongst others on offer too. The garden at the front soaks up the sun and the landlord is most accommodating. We were also lucky enough to get in a few games of bar billiards too. I look forward to my return.

4 May 2011 13:58

The Wykeham Arms, Winchester

A lovely pub in a beautiful part of this beautiful city. The beer was great and atmosphere buzzing when we visited on Saturday night. The charming interior is a feast for the eyes and bar staff friendly and considerate even though the place was very busy. Can't wait to return.

11 Apr 2011 12:36

The Black Boy, Winchester

Pubs dont get much better than this place. I really enjoyed the decor even if it is contrived. We had a few ales here on Saturday and welcoming as the interior is, we chose to spend our time outside under a warming heater. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed and the beer great. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend The Black Boy to anyone.

11 Apr 2011 10:35

The Chestnut Horse, Easton

What a charming pub! We had a few beers here on Saturday and received wonderful service in what is a beautiful old pub full of charm and great decor. It's a Badger's pub which meant I was lucky enough to be drinking Pickled Partridge. I look forward to my next visit.

11 Apr 2011 10:31

The Plough and Harrow, Bridge

We popped in here whilst walking in the area and were welcomed kindly by the locals and landlord who were most hospitable. On tap were the usual selection of Neame beers, and for me, the champion of lagers, Hrlimann made the day. There is also a nice bar billiards table tucked away which is always worth a game or two. Very pleasant surroundings, we'll definitely be back.

14 Mar 2011 10:24

The White Horse Inn, Bridge

This pub looked like it was closed and having a redec on the weekend of 12th March 2011. Let's hope it reopens soon.

The Padwell Arms, Seal

We walked here at the weekend and found the place to be most welcoming. Had a lovely pint at the front bar in a charming pub.
What saddens me most about comments on this website is that the majority of views are from over-critical walkers. You know who you are.
Would definitely return.

The Fox and Hounds, Toys Hill

We walked here at the weekend from Ide Hill on a miserable day and sat at the bar near a pleasant, warming coal fire.
There were a few people eating and not many people drinking or staff on show, but the guy behind the jump was very polite.
A nice, relaxed front bar with fine beer.
We would pop in again when passing.

The Woodman, Ide Hill

Walked here at the weekend from Ide Hill village and had a brace of Speckled Hens whilst sitting at the bar.
This place is gorgeous inside with lots of nooks and crannies if you would rather tuck yourself away.
We didn't eat here but friends recommend the food and visit regularly.
The staff were very polite and friendly and the beer fine.

The Cock, Ide Hill

Visited this lovely pub over the weekend whilst walking to Toys Hill. There was a very friendly bunch at the bar and a roaring log fire warming one of the two bars we were in.
The beer was fine and we felt most welcome although did not stop for food.

The Red Lion, Stodmarsh

Possibly the best pub in the world!
We stopped in for a pint before going walking through the adjacent marshes and loved it so much we walked straight back two hours later for a couple more pints. The decor was lovely and layout great, but it's more a gastro pub than drinking establishment. The couple next to us asked to compliment the chef and landlord had to say "fully booked" to phone enquires, so I'm guessing the cuisine is excellent.
But, as others have mentioned before, the landlord is the star of the show. What a gentleman! We couldn't have been made more welcome.
The beer was great and there's accommodation, too. Delightful setting in deepest Kent.

The New Inn, Tresco

Great pub on Tresco with reasonable prices and good beer. Nice decor and pool table inside but the best place here was the sun-kissed garden. Didnt eat, but the food we saw looked delicious.

The Bishop and Wolf, St Marys

Nice pub in the centre of town with a good bar and pool table outside the back. Beer and service was fine but we tended to have a quick coffee here in the morning before getting a ferry out for the day. Restaurant looked nice but we didnt eat here.

The Star Castle Hotel, St Mary's

The Dungeon Bar in this hotel must be unique. Rugged stone walls and nautical paintings in the depths of this ancient building add to a great ambience. We stopped here every night and enjoyed the company of guests and staff. Beer was fine but a round could be a bit pricey. Food available in the restaurant.

The Old Town Inn, St Mary's

Contemporary pub a short walk from Hugh Town. Beer was good including a local ale. Pool table available and bar service good. We didnt eat here, so cant criticise.

The Mermaid Inn, St Mary's

Fantastic pub right on the harbour of St Marys. A good mixture of locals and tourists and fine service. The beer was kept well and local ales on tap. Definitely the best pub on the Island. Didnt eat here so nothing to add. Pool table in good nick.

Atlantic Inn, St Mary's

Nice pub in the middle of town with good views over the harbor if youre lucky enough to get a table outside. The inside was tastefully decorated. Beer was fine. Didnt eat, so no comment there.

The Seven Stones Inn, St Martins

Wonderful place with possibly some of the best views Ive ever seen from a pub. The beer on tap was fine and bar staff very friendly and talkative. Pool table always a bonus. Didnt eat, but others near us were complimentary.

The Turks Head, St Agnes

Gem of a pub with fabulous views back over to St Marys. Beer was grand with a couple of regulars and a guest in fine condition. We were only drinking, so no comment on food, but the service was exemplary.

The Porthcressa Inn, Porthcressa

Pretty sure this is just a nightclub now.

24 Sep 2010 15:07

The Fraggle Rock, Bryher

Nice place on one of the quieter islands. More of a bar than a pub, but it had a beer, lager and cider on tap.
