The Old Monkey, Manchester

good range of Holts ale, central location and plenty of room, unlike around the corner. Well worth a visit.

The Akenside Traders, Newcastle

Cheap and cheerful, lively establishment, limited range of ales, but decent enough service, cheap food, does what it says on the tin.

15 Feb 2015 15:39

Bridge Hotel, Newcastle

Really good pub, plenty of room, good ale range, central location, football on the box, decent pub grub, pies available etc, what's not to like?

15 Feb 2015 15:38

The Borough, Lancaster

Hard one to judge. Very smart establishment, tastefully done up, good range of ales, charachter old building, but its more of a bar/restaurant, sort of place for couples etc, than a "proper", outright pub.

15 Feb 2015 15:37

The Ring O'Bells, Lancaster

Cracking pub. Good range of ales, roaring log fire on the go in the middle of winter, few pub games, central location. Would definitely use again.

The Vine Inn, Manchester

Disappointing. Outstanding looking exterior. Inside just a normal, dull pub. Limited range of beers. Might be better early evening when the downstairs is opened up.

The City Arms, Manchester

Probably my favourite Manchester pub, great boozer, top draw range of beers, lovely interior, great pub.

24 Oct 2013 13:42

The Grey Horse Inn, Manchester

Cracking little pub, full of charachter, good range of ales, opens at 11, does get busy on match days though.

24 Oct 2013 13:39

The Circus Tavern, Manchester

Tiny bar. Decent amount of seating if you get there early enough, a real struggle if you don't get a seat to have a comfortable drink. Lots of character in the pub, friendly staff, limited range of beers.

The Doric Arch, Euston

I must have walked past this pub 100 times before and was always put off by the entrance, assuming that the pub itself woud just be a usual station pub.

Tried it for the first time a couple of weeks ago - excellent boozer, lots of charachter, full of railway and transport paraphanalia, very good range of beers. Well worth a visit.

The Duke of Sussex, Waterloo

Cracking pub, proper south London boozer, without ever feeling "moody" or unwelcoming, yet has not turned into a gastro pub or anything like it. Kareoke on a Saturday night is always a mad one. Sort of pub London needs more of, a pub that is open late for a beer and a laugh, rather than having to go to a bar or club.

14 Apr 2013 23:15

The New Inn, Southampton

This pub is now called Infernos. Good, down to earth boozer, sky sports, cheap drinks and food. Not one for those that are big fans of real ale, but a decent, friendly pub.

8 Apr 2013 23:50

The Jubilee, Norwich

Nice, proper little pub. Bit of a "locals" feel and wasn't the most welcoming of places, wouldn't stop me coming back here though.

8 Apr 2013 23:28

The Coach and Horses, Norwich

Good pub. Large establishment and not cheap, but good range of ales, friendly helpful staff, decent pub food, easy walk to the football ground and station. Does get very busy on match days. Sky sports and a roaring open fire.

8 Apr 2013 23:25

The Allied Arms, Reading

From the outside it looks a scruffy little pub that you could happily walk past, but inside its a proper old, English boozer. Slightly limited, but good enough ale on, good cider, massive court yard out back with a marque cover. One of the better pubs in Reading.

8 Apr 2013 23:22

The Turks, Reading

Really enjoyed this pub. Huge place, sky sports, live music, pool table. Couple of good ales on (although I wouldn't call it an out and out real ale pub), friendly helpful staff. Decent, simple pub grub. Was pretty quiet on the Saturday afternoon we were there, but we saw that as a good thing.

The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield

Worth a visit for it's interior alone, great pub, lots of different rooms, roaring fire in the winter. Good, but small range of ale. Only criticism is the bar staff weren't the friendliest, appeared to be the sort that were on a shift from an agency, rather than anyone who actually had a tie to the pub and was interested in the customers. Still well worth a visit.

The City Arms, Manchester

Fantastic pub. Great old decor. Top notch range of ales. Easy to get served even when the pub was fairly busy on an evening. Will definitely use again.

Anvil, Wigan

Very disappointed with this pub. Cheap, modern interior. Quality of ale a bit hit and miss. TVs for watching the football tucked out the way and hard to view when the pub is busy. Staff friendly and helpful.

5 Feb 2013 00:18

Stanley Arms, Preston

Really liked this pub, best I could find in the area by some way. Decent selection of ale, excellent food for just a couple of quid, very clean, tvs showing sport, but no sky. Lots of lovely old detailing and pictures. Good pub, central location. Seems like they do some sort of Northern Soul night in the evenings.

The Grapes, Southampton

Not a bad boozer, but lacks a certain something and is very expensive!

31 Dec 2012 11:24

The Old Parrs Head, Kensington

Excellent pub, full of charachter, great staff behind the bar, very welcoming. Regular ales such as Doom Bar, plus a couple of guests, all well looked after. Has sky sports and did Thai food. Not cheap though at £4 a pint, going rate for the area, but still worth knowing in advance!

31 Dec 2012 11:11

The Old Suffolk Punch, Hammersmith

This is the sort of pub that gets a lot of stick, but no real reason for it to do so. Had one guest ale on and the regular Greene King fare, all were fine and very cheap for this part of the world, as was the range of food. Clean and friendly pub, sky sports. Service was slow and lacks charachter, but there are far worse pubs out there. Not bad for a pint or two on the way to Craven Cottage.

31 Dec 2012 11:08

The Rockstone, Southampton

Excellent range of ales, better range than the Guide Dog in my opinion. Large pub, with some outdoor seating, nice old charachter pub, the new owners have done a great job on it. However, it isn't cheap, particulalry for food and is another one of those pubs that has a dog running around where customers are trying to eat which isn't really needed! Nevertheless a very good pub.

The Shooting Star, Southampton

Usually very queit in the day time, so I imagine they do their majority of their trade in the evening and a lot from the student market I guess. Huge pub, with even bigger beer garden and terrace out the back. Have been there when they have had an ale and cider festival on which was good, but typically the range of ale is limited. Clean pub, friendly staff, pool table and juke box. 7/10 from me.

31 Dec 2012 11:00

The Guide Dog, Bevois Valley

Very good range of ales, cheap prices, good little pub, but too small, does get very busy quite easily and almost feels like someone's front room at times!

31 Dec 2012 10:58

The Gordon Arms, Portswood

Slightly pricey pub, but that is probably the only criticism I could make of it. Clean, smart old pub, with just enough charachter, ales aren't anything out of the ordinary (Doom Bar, Bath Gem etc), but quality was fine. Good luck finding the Gents!

31 Dec 2012 10:56

The Lion Tavern, Liverpool

Excellent pub, first class range of ales and cider, plus all the usual lagers etc. Friendly and efficient staff. Beautiful old building. Had planned to do a pub crawl of the area and ended up staying here hours. Had sky sports on as well, know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but was a bonus for us football fans.

31 Dec 2012 10:50

The Coborn Arms, Bow

Massive pub, nice location and great on a summer's day. Slightly lacking in character and not cheap.

18 Sep 2012 22:45

The Wentworth Arms, Mile End

Proper old fashioned, east end local. Small and no real ale, but a friendly, proper little pub in an area that has lost so many.

18 Sep 2012 22:41

The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch

Excellent boozer, sort of place that needs to be preserved. Good, but limited range of ale. Bit cramped when its busy. But a real, old fashioned, character London pub.

18 Sep 2012 22:39

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Fantastic range of excellent ale and cider. Good pub snacks. Tasteful decor and nice crowd. Has lost a bit of it's 'proper pub' feel bit too smart and stylish as a result of it's refit. Still definitely worth a visit.

18 Sep 2012 22:36

The Newton Arms, Holborn

Doesn't look much from the outside, but a proper boozer inside. Sky sports. Slightly old, grumpy bar staff catering for the masons again

18 Sep 2012 22:32

The Hercules Pillars, Holborn

Decent pub, good ale, but expensive and often full of masons.

18 Sep 2012 22:28

The Monument, Monument

Not even really a proper pub. Bit of a hotel chain bar feel. Rude staff. Bad, expensive ale. Guess its location means it'll always get plenty of post-office drinkers, but there is no other reason to go here.

18 Sep 2012 22:23

The Land of Liberty, Peace and Plenty, Heronsgate

Excellent range of top-quality ales and ciders. Nice old, country pub feel and decor. Good setting in a great part of the world, would not know you're so close to the M25. Friendly staff. Only criticism is the presence/smell of the large alsatian. I am sure it is a lovely old dog and pub dogs can add to the character, but surely landlords/ladies must realise that not all patrons are going to be as big a fan of dogs as them, particularly when out eating and drinking in a relatively confined space? Given this pub an "8" regardless.

The Lord Clyde, Borough

Cracking pub, as aesthetically pleasing as any I've drank in. Good, friendly, professional service. Clean toilets. Nicely tucked away off the beaten track. Sky sports showing football and horse racing, without being obtrusive.

Only slight criticism I would have is drinks aren't cheap and not an amazing range of ales, but what they do have (TEA, Pride etc) is kept well enough. Great pub.

1 Jun 2012 13:35

The Red Lion, Isleworth

Excellent pub, nice interesting, proper pub decor, chilled out crowd, not the most exciting range of ales, but quality good and good range of rare ciders on offer. Clean toilets. Funny little pub dog. Plenty of scope for outdoor drinking. Excellent "Open mic" night on Wednesdays, Beatles, Stones, bit of country and western etc, all done well, but not too seriously.

All told an excellent pub.
