The Blackstock, Finsbury Park

This pub has now had a makeover. It is now a quite trendy looking gastro type pub. There are two hand pumps now. When I visited they only had Adnams Ghost Ship on, this was very well kept. Other trendy beers on keg including blue moon. Staf were very friendly. Worth having a look in if you're in the area.

The Firkin Shed, Bournemouth

Can't believe this place hasn't been reviewed on here. I was in after watching my team, Boro, get beat at Dean Court. Fantastic selection of real ale, great snacks, superb staff and some very reasonable Bournemouth fans to have a chat to. This place is far too good for Premiership fans next season!

29 Jun 2015 19:26

The Shaftesbury, Holloway

Completely refurbished since my last visit. On first impressions just another gastro pub. However, this is linked to the Dragonfly brew pub in Action and real ale and craft beer is to the fore. Good selection and knowledgeable and enthusiastic bar staff. Food looked really good and the tunes coming out of the jukebox were to my liking. Nice place will be back.

28 Nov 2014 23:35

Earl Haig Hall, Crouch End

Opened in November 2013, converted British Legion Hall. On our visit last night there were 4 real ales on, all pretty good. Food was really good, well presented and interesting. Staff were efficient and friendly. Will be back.

20 Jul 2014 12:19

The Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds

I like this place and have previously rated highly and left very positive fedback. However, yesterday we were served two pints that were really well past their prime. They were changed with no problem, but they should never have been served in the first place, you could smell the vinegar as they were being poured.

7 Jul 2014 11:03

The Beerhouse, Bury St Edmunds

Second visit to this pub, previous visit was over a year ago. Was in a group of 4. Between us we tried all of the Breweshed ales and a couple of the guests. All were excellent and the service was really good.

7 Jul 2014 11:00

The Hillsborough Hotel, Sheffield

After a disappointing 90 mins watching the Boro up at Hillsborough this was a great start to our post match pub crawl. Very good ale, excellent food and brilliant friendly service!

5 May 2013 18:29

The Earl of Lonsdale, Notting Hill

Nice enough pub, but be warned it's one of Sam Smiths pubs that only serves keg ale.

17 Nov 2012 09:26

The Gardeners Arms, Lewes

Great quirky pub with very good selection of small brewery ales. The barmaid referred to below couldn't have been more pleasant or efficient when we popped in yesterday.

21 Oct 2012 09:08

The Nascot Arms, Watford

Nice back street boozer. Good range of well kept Greene King ales and guests. Thai food was the best I've had in a pub for ages. Nice friendly service.

7 Oct 2012 09:04

Shaker and Company, Euston

Now called Shaker and Company. Doubles as a cocktail bar and cocktail school! Also serves real ale and some interesting bottled beers. Tried the Timothy Taylor Landlord and Adnams Ghost Ship - both in pretty good nick. Nice place and staff very efficient and pleasant.

21 Sep 2012 12:31

The Square Tavern, Euston

Went back in here last night for the first time in a while - I'd previously been unimpressed and posted reviews to that effect. Glad to say that it is very much better. Two real ales on St Austell Tribute and Youngs Ordinary, both very good. The service was quick and cheerful. A group of 6 of us ate, all the food was very good. Glad to say that this place is a whole lot better and will happily return.

21 Sep 2012 12:25

The Willoughby Arms, Kingston Upon Thames

Very friendly back street boozer. Was in before the AFC Wimbledon v Morecambe match. Very quickly got chatting to some AFC fans - who ordered us a cab to the match. Decent selection of real ales on - best was Oakleaf Quercus Folium. Would recommend this place to fans looking for a pre match pint and a bite to eat - some nice free bar snacks.

19 Feb 2012 20:07

The Dove, Ipswich

One of the benefits of the Ipswich v Boro match being abandoned after half an hour was that we got to go back to this great boozer. Some great real ales on. The brews from their own micro brewery were very good. Good home made food and a very friendly atmosphere.

12 Feb 2012 12:17

The Guide Dog, Bevois Valley

Fantastic pub. Stopped in on the way down to St Mary's (less said about that the better!). Had a few excellent pints of Mooerehouse Black Cat. Others in our group tried other ales, all very good. Decent group of locals and the service was excellent.

31 Oct 2011 12:40

The South Western, St Denys

Very nice freindly pub. Beer was on good form when we visited on Saturday, can't say the same thing about our football team later on in the afternoon at St Mary's. Pleasant beer garden that was warm enough to use even on 29 October. The food served from the horse box in the car park was very good.

31 Oct 2011 12:38

The Drum, Walthamstow

Very good wetherspoons. Lots of choice on the beer front and the quality was very good. Nice little yard out the back. Seemed to have a lot of regulars and there was a friendly atmosphere.

6 Aug 2011 10:56

The Birkbeck Tavern, Leyton

On our visit yesterday two real ales on , both in top condition. Sat out and enjoyed them in what must be one of the nicest pub gardens in London.

6 Aug 2011 10:54

The William IV, Leyton

I was in last night for the first time in a while. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. Not by the friendly service, decent food or atmosphere, but by the beer. Me and my mate tried 8 f the Brodies on between us and 6 of them were in very poor condition. They weren't quite bad enough to take back, but were pretty close. I hope this is a temporary blip, perhaps the hot weather hasn't helped. I've been coming here on and off since they started the Brodies and I hope they get this sorted.

6 Aug 2011 10:52

The Snooty Fox, Canonbury

First visit yesterday afternoon. The place is very nice, great old style jukebox, four real ales on - the Redemption Pale Ale was very good. The service was friendly and quick. Happily pay this a longer visit next time.

1 Apr 2011 17:19

Jolly Butchers, Stoke Newington

Me and three others made a first visit to this place last night. The ale on was excellent we tried, between us, stuff from Redemption, hophead, Thornbridge and Atlas. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and the food was as good as it gets in a pub. By 7 in the evening the place was packed with a nice laid back crowd. Great place can't recommend it enough, will be back

4 Feb 2011 09:43

The Alexandra Arms, Rugby

Back street local. Popped in on Sunday lunchtime. It wasn't busy, but the banter between the freindly locals and barmaid was very amusing. Clearly a pub that has a good number of regulars and I could see why. 6 real ales on two at least from local breweries, tried four of them between us and they were all very good. The menu offered tried and tested pub grub and the prices seemed reasonable. Didn't eat this time, but will give it a go when back in Rugby.

24 Jan 2011 09:48

The Merchants Inn, Rugby

Large, busy popoular pub on the edge of the town centre. Really good selection of real ale on including local brews. All the beer we tried was in top form. Seems to be the place for Sunday lunch and the food coming out looked very good. Staff very freindly and efficient and a nice mixed crowd of punters. Would go back.

24 Jan 2011 09:43

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

Was in last night. Three real ales on, tried two - Theakstons Bitter and Directors. Both very good. as usual freindly and efficient service, and mixed laid back crowd. this with the Old Ale Emporium and the Salisbury make for a decent Green Lanes pub crawl - with the option of food at anyone of the excellent Turkish/Kurdish restaurants close by.

14 Jan 2011 12:09

The Coopers Tavern, Burton-Upon-Trent

Fantastic pub, great range of ales. High point of yesterdays visit was the landlady forming a queue for the lager drinkers - only two taps, while us more discerning drinkers were getting served straight away! Wide selection of ale served in quirky surroundings. Would have liked to stop longer and sampled more of their excellently well kept beer, but we had other pubs that it would have been rude not to have visited.

9 Jan 2011 13:00

The Burton Bridge Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent

Visited here yesterday on the way up to the football, about a mile walk up to the ground. On of a number of good pubs with great beer that we visited in Burton. The beer here was excellent, between us we tried the entire Burton Bridge Brewery range. The food, black pudding sausages and mash, was very nice and great value. The welcome couldn't have been nicer, they dealt with an influx of thirsty and hungry Boro fans no problem at all. Just to put the tin hat on it they sell great pork pies - so no queueing at half time for me.

Great pub, nice folks.

9 Jan 2011 12:56

The Trinity Arms, Brixton

I only ever go in this pub on the way to gigs at the Academy. However, I'd love it to be closer to where I live as it's a great pub. The beer, food and service are all excellent and its always a welcoming place. The Youngs Special, Ordinary and London Gold were all really good last night.

7 Dec 2010 12:02

Scholars, Scarborough

Last stop on my flying visit - details a bit fuzzy. Ale excellent and a free round due to rolling the right dice meant I headed off for the train back to York with a decent bottle of ale to keep me company. Very lively place.

1 Dec 2010 21:11

Cellars, Scarborough

3rd pub on my lightning tour of Scarborough, again great selection of ale and very decent atmosphere for a snowy Tuesday night.

1 Dec 2010 21:08

Valley, Scarborough

Second pub on a flying visit to Scarborough. Great selection of ales and foreign beers, busy for a Tuesday night and just an all round decent boozer, shames it's 200 miles from where I live!!

1 Dec 2010 21:06

North Riding Hotel, Scarborough

Had heard a lot about this place from mates in Scarborough who are regulars. Finally managed a flying visit to check out a few watering holes. This place didn't disappoint. Tried three ales all in top condition, friendly welcome, very good chilli and nice atmosphere.

1 Dec 2010 21:05

The City Arms, Manchester

Used to be a regular haunt on the way to Old Trafford and Maine Road/Eastlands. Sadly my team plays lower down these days. However, was up in Manchester this weekend and took the chance to pop in. It's as good as it ever was, great selection of week kept ale, welcoming atmosphere and decent basic food. Yet another reason to hope for promotion!

21 Nov 2010 20:07

The Bulls Head, Manchester

Popped in a few times this weekend while up in Manchester. Really nice traditional boozer, gaffer and bar staff very friendly and helpful, beer good (Jennings/Marstons and all well kept) and the sausage and bacon baps just what the Doctor ordered. Will happily put in on my list for future visits to Manchester.

21 Nov 2010 18:39

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Got to agree with elsiepop. Beer has been great during the festival and the service is loads better.

12 Nov 2010 10:08

The Ferry Tap, South Queensferry

Three of us paid a visit last Monday. Within in a minute we were included in a conversation with some very decent locals. The beer was very good, unfortunately the Caledonian 80 bob was off, but the Harvistoun Bitter and Twisted and Caledonian Octoberfest were great. Really friendly pub, great position, will return.

30 Oct 2010 22:53

The Fat Cat, Norwich

Simply what a pub should be!

23 Oct 2010 22:45

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

First visit since the early 90s. Very nice pub, beer festival in full swing in the garden at the moment. Only had time for one pint and a ploughmans, both were very good. As mentioned in other reviews a very welcoming place, will be back with a little more time to enjoy the place.

22 Oct 2010 15:56

The Swimmer at The Grafton Arms, Holloway

Hadn't been in this place since it was the Grafton Arms, many moons ago. It's a nice comfortable pub now, don't know about the food as I didn't try it, but looked and smelled good. Beer, I tried Butcombe Bitter and Fullers Red Fox, were both really good. Staff were very quick and friendly and there was a nice mixed crowd in for a Friday night with a laid back atmosphere. I'll happily visit again.

16 Oct 2010 12:01

The Royal Oak, Borough

Seems like the talk of John and Frank moving on might have been wide of the mark. They were both in there at lunch time, on good form and not planning to pack their bags any time soon. Great news as it is them that make this place the best pub in London in my view.

21 Sep 2010 14:33

The Anglers Retreat, Marsworth

Visited the pub for the first time yesterday. Tried three of the beers, Tring Sidepocket, Oakham White Dwarf and Milton Pegasus - all were very nice. Also had food which was obviously home cooked and very good. On top of that the service for the 10 of us was prompt and freindly. Sort of pub I'd be very happy to have on my door step.

20 Sep 2010 11:00

The Marble Arch, Manchester

Great selection of beers, own brewed stuff was very good. Good atmosphere and decent food. Slope down to the bar could prove interesting after one over the eight!

16 Sep 2010 14:11

The Doric Arch, Euston

Good thing about this place is that it is almost a station pub, but it stands as a good pub without its location. Decent ale, decent food and the staff are very good.

19 Aug 2010 15:58

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

Stopped in for a quick couple last night. Beer - Oxford Gold and Jennings Cock a hoop both very good. Service good and friendly. All round very nice pub.

15 Aug 2010 12:23

The Lord John Russell, Russell Square

No question, just a good honest boozer!

22 Jul 2010 20:09

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

This place seems to be on the up at the moment. Staff are trying and the choice of ales is pretty good. As someone who lives local I'm very happy with the improvement.

10 Jul 2010 00:30

The Chesham Arms, Homerton

Paid my second ever visit to this pub last night. They had two real ales on Cottage Reservoir Dogs and Nethergate Sheep's Eye, both were well kept. They have a decent food menu and the food we tried was good. The service was really good and freindly. This place hasd a really nice atmosphere. It's obviously a locals pub but 'visitors' are clearly more than welcome. If I lived in Hackney I'd be happy to make this place my local.

8 Jul 2010 09:47

The Duke of York, Borough

Oh look another person so impressed by this place they ran straight out and registered on BITE and placed a glowing review!

6 Jul 2010 09:52

The Duke of York, Borough

This is indeed a nice pub. However, the flurry of 'brilliant' recommendations from folk who've only reviewd one pub and were so impressed by this place that they registered and commented on the same day make me a little suspicious! May just boycott the place on principle.

5 Jul 2010 10:45

The Plough, Bloomsbury

First visit yesterday - beer was good - particularly the Youngs London Gold. Not a bad pub at all.

17 Jun 2010 17:32

The Lord Palmerston, Tottenham

Well this Greene King pub does now have real ale. Last night it was IPA and Old Speckled Hen, though I hear they switch it. Both beers were very good and this place has a decent friendly atmosphere. The woman serving behind the bar was cheerful, seemed to know the regulars and was quick to serve. Nice to have a pub in N17 with some decent beer, I'll be back.

22 May 2010 10:23

The George, Great Portland Street

This may be a Greene King pub, but it's a very good one. Popped in today tried GK seasonal ales - Morris Madness, London Royal - both were very good. Also tried the guest beer - Exmoor Fox - very, very good. The food was good and the blokes serving were very efficient and freindly. Overall a very good pub and I'll be back.

7 May 2010 17:00

The Tea Clipper, Knightsbridge

Not a bad pub at all. Two decent ales on last night - Ringwood Best and Brakespear's EPA - looked like they'd been serving Oxford Gold too. Decent service, pleasant surroundings and the fish and chips were very good. A good place for a pre concert pint if heading to the Royal Albert Hall.

7 May 2010 09:52

The Square Tavern, Euston

Service doesn't get any better. Had lunch here - server came over with my sandwich and chips 'would you like anything with it, mayonnaise?' me 'that would be nice', server we haven't got any mayonnaise. Me 'okay can I have some vinegar?' After I'd finished my sandwich, chips and second pint the server turned up with the vinegar and put it next to my empty plate - no comment, nothing. You couldn't make it up!

4 May 2010 15:17

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Well went back after my unsuccessful attempt at a visit the other week - and I'm very glad I did! A cracking addition to the London pub scene. Great range of decent ale from top micro breweries, the food looked great and a very nice atmosphere. Staff and owners were very pleasant and the barmaid on her first shift was a diamond - hope they keep her. All in all a great pub and I'll be back.

22 Apr 2010 22:23

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Would have liked to have posted a review on this pub today. However, I got there at 17.00 last night to find a note saying that due to circumstances beyond their control they would not be opening on Wednesday, but would be open as usual on Thursday. Shame was looking forward to seeing what all the fuss was about! Will have to try again.

15 Apr 2010 09:57

The William IV, Leyton

Was in last night before and after popping down to Brisbane Road for the match. 9 beers on for a Tuesday lunctime - not too shabby! All the Brodies I tried were very good and all at 1.99 a pint. Food was basic, cheap and good pub grub. Can't think of a single negative about this place.

14 Apr 2010 10:50

The Lord Clyde, Borough

Smasshing old school pub, good selection of ales on last night. The Hogsback TEA was very nice. Had a disagrement over what I was charged for beers when we first went in. Turned out that I was wrong. However, the Landlord handled it in a a very low key and professional way - he could have taken more umbridge at my mistake. Yet another reason to favour this decent, honest pub.

9 Apr 2010 10:21

The Railway Tavern, Crouch End

Trendy looking place - much different to when I last drank in here a few years ago. Nice laid back atmosphere, staff very pleasant and efficient. Tried the Deuchars IPA and Timothy Taylors Landlord, both were very good. Menu looked interesting I will try it next time I'm in. All in all a very nice place.

8 Apr 2010 14:27

The Salisbury, Harringay

Hadn't been in for a while until last night. Was in with a big group, including 4 kids having a quick pint or two before going to the excellent Flame Turkish Restaurant across the road. Landlord couldn't have been more accommodating about the kids, but made it clear that they needed to be well behaved and not run about the place - all fair enough. Tried the Discovery and Bengal Lancer, both very good. Service was quick and friendly. May have to start popping in more often.

4 Apr 2010 17:18

The Triple 7 Restaurant & Brewery, Las Vegas

All five beers they brew on site were very good and the taster option was good value. Food was very good as was the service.

24 Mar 2010 15:23

The Monte Carlo Brewpub, Las Vegas

Fair selection of beers, but outside of happy hours this place is extortionate.

24 Mar 2010 15:21

The Ellis Island Casino and Brewery, Las Vegas

Well I'd be a liar if I said this was the best pub I'd ever been in or that the beer was fantastic. But at $1.50 a pint the beer was more than passable and the dark beer and stout were really quite good. The BBQ attached was brilliant - choice was ribs or chicken and it was all good!

23 Mar 2010 19:32

Three Compasses, Hornsey

In last night for the first time in ages. As ever the ale was great, the staff dead efficient and friendly. The Hobgoblin was particularly good.

14 Mar 2010 11:55

The Golden Star, Norwich

Absolutely nothing wrong with this place, beer Greene King well kept and served by decent staff, welcoming sort of place. However, for anyone who can remember the Golden Star of old it's difficult not feeling just a little disappointed!

7 Mar 2010 15:59

The Fat Cat, Norwich

First visit here yesterday. Ale selection was brilliant, nice atmosphere, packed mid afternoon and it deserved to be.

7 Mar 2010 14:19

The Lamp Tavern, Birmingham

First visit here on Tuesday night and wasn't disapointed. Old school pub, old school landlord. Great selection of ale, much of it local - The Aston Dark was very good. Huge TV screen showing channel 4 news of all things. Will now be added to my must visit pubs when I'm in Brum.

4 Mar 2010 11:28

The Black Horse, Thetford

Was in this pub for Sunday Lunch, the first time I've been in for at least 10 years. They had three beers on Orkney Dark Island, Woodfordes Wherry and GK IPA. Tried the Dark Island and the Wherry both were excellent. Food was very good and good value. The staff and the locals were all very freindly. Probably the best pub in Thetford currently.

22 Feb 2010 10:28

The Square Tavern, Euston

This place has the potential to be really good. The beers, Bombadier and Youngs ordinary are well kept and the food is good and well priced. However, whenever I've been in the staff have been that miserable that it puts a right downer on a few pints. They really have got making you feel a little unwelcome down to a fine art. Shame!

13 Feb 2010 14:00

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

This once half decent, if a little rough and ready, wetherspoons is fast going to the dogs. The service has gone from for average for a wetherspoons to bloody awful. Watching the manager wandering about picking up glasses whilst one member of staff struggled with long queues was depressing. Wen he finally decided to serve he lectured me on the pronunciation of one of their new wheat beers then headed off without giving me a glass - I assume he was expecting me to drink from the bottle like it was a corona!

8 Feb 2010 14:52

The Dove, Ipswich

Great pub. Excellent range of ales, lots of them from local breweries. The food was really good and not expensive. Unlike the last poster I found the staff very freindly. It's a bit of a walk from the station and then back to Portman Road, but well worth it!

7 Feb 2010 10:20

The Gladstone Arms, Borough

Went to a music night last night here. The place was packed and the acts very interesting. In between that they were serving very good Tribute and Doom Bar and the pie and mash looked and smelled great. Nice place.

22 Jan 2010 12:24

The Express Tavern, Kew Bridge

Very nice traditional boozer. Three real ales on Batemans Miss Scotland, Youngs Ordinary and Bass - all very good. Good selection of traditional pub grub at decent prices and what I ate was well worth the money. Seems very well run and the Scottish woman behind the bar, the landlady I assume, was very pleasant. I'd highly recommend this place.

20 Jan 2010 22:13

Harlequin, Sheffield

First visit here on Saturday. Good selection of, in the main, local and localish brews. Beer in good condition, nice atmosphere and good sevice. The great big rolls being served at lunchtime looked good too!

17 Jan 2010 21:00

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

Paid a long overdue return visit to this place on Saturday before going off to see Middlesbrough at Brammal Lane. The beer quality and selection were great, the hospitality brilliant. And the customer service couldn't have been better, there was a mix up with my wife's food and they happliy agreed to replace it, better than that they were happy to 'give away' her order to another of our party and with good grace! Great, Great place. As for the football.........

17 Jan 2010 20:58

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

I've always liked this place. However, I think the managment might have changed - the service tonight was terrible!

15 Jan 2010 23:43

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Had a pint of Rudgate Ruby Mild and Red Squirrel London Porter in here last night on one of my all to infrequent visits. They were both excellent. The choice and quality of the beer in this pub is outstanding and the service and atmosphere match it.

15 Jan 2010 10:40

The Royal Oak, Borough

Don't work in the area anymore so my visits are far less frequent. Was good to be back for a couple of pints last night -the Old and Armada were very good. Usual pleasant laid back atmosphere. Frank and John the landlords here know how to run a pub brilliantly and how to keep it that way.

15 Jan 2010 10:37

The Settle Inn, Stirling

Normally my pub of choice when in Stirling. Was in just before Xmas and was a bit disapointed that there was only one real ale on. That said it was very good and it wouldn't put me off going again.

4 Jan 2010 12:51

The Portcullis, Stirling

Had a couple of pints in here over the Xmas period. Both pints I had were Scottish micro brews and were in very god condition. Place was quite busy, decent atmosphere and the bar staff very efficient and friendly.

4 Jan 2010 12:49

The Prince Of Wales, Iffley

Popped in twice over the last couple of days. Once for a quick pint and to check the place out for a family get together. The pint was great and the way they handled the 12 of us, some pretty hard to please, the next night was excellent. The beer - four Wadworths and a Adnams guest seasonal were all excellent. The food was just what they said it would be good honest pub grub - well above par, well served and very good quality. The Landlady and staff were very helpful and freindly and the locals very freindly.

All in all a really, really good pub - If I lived closer I'd be more than happy to make it my local.

30 Dec 2009 16:43

The Lord John Russell, Russell Square

First ever visit today. Good range of ales and the ones I tried were well kept. Also had Budvar and Budvar dark on tap - very nice. The food is old style pub grub and was very, very goood and at a reasonable price. Nice mix of punters tourists, locals and office staff and a decent atmosphere. Will be back.

18 Dec 2009 14:18

The King Charles I, Kings Cross

In last night - had three Brodie's ales on, all were very good. Nice atmosphere in this place had a good chin wag with the very entertaining bar man. Great to have such a nice place so close to Kings Cross.

29 Nov 2009 14:17

The Brewery Tap, Peterborough

Really good pub, Was in before the M,Boro v P,Boro match yesterday. Really good range of ale and the Thai food was very good and not pricey. Feel sorry for the CAMRA folk who were coming in for a do later on as we seemed to have drunk most of the stuff that was set up on the stillage for them!

29 Nov 2009 11:30

The Garden House, Edgbaston

Wasn't expecting much of this place based on the comments on here and it being a Chef and Brewer. But as I was over the road in the hotel thought I'd give it a try. Two Davenport beers on and Hobsons Mild all in good nick and the service was fine. Not a bad place at all.

17 Oct 2009 13:29

The Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark

Ended up in here for Sunday lunch during a walk down the South Bank. The bars and restaurants on the river were all packed. This place only a few minutes off the river, was very empty. Great find though. Great food, great beer and very, very good service.

11 Oct 2009 19:54

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town

Not many gastro pubs manage to be great real ale pubs as well. This place is an exception. The food is excellent and the range and quality of the ales, matches the food. Trips to the Forum are made even better by this place being in striking distance - on Saturday - the pub was good, the food was good, the beer was good and so were the Gang of Four!

1 Oct 2009 12:12

Blue Pig Inn, Grantham

First visit this week. Beer I had was in good condition and the blackened cajun chicked was delicous and good value. Great looking old pub

1 Oct 2009 12:00

The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool

First visit this week. Really nice place, loads of decent cask ale and the biggest selection of German Weiss beers I've ever seen in a pub. Very freindly, enthusiastic and knowledgable bar man.

17 Sep 2009 12:27

The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay

Been dropping in to this pub every now and again for a lot of years now. Its been good for a number of those years, but at the moment the landlord and landlady really do seem to be getting it all right. The real ale range was great last night with cragrat from Jennings and Sunchaser from Everards that were very nice, with two other choices. It has a mix of regulars and a very decent atmosphere. Nice to be told about the ales by the ladlady when ordering my first pint. Bar staff always efficient and freindly. Glad that CMRA have recognised this place - they deserve it!

10 Sep 2009 09:43

The Doric Arch, Euston

Went in at lunch to watch the cricket. Tried three of the ales all in top condition. Good choice of beer, very good service and thefood was nice. Really good pub in an unpromising location.

20 Aug 2009 16:54

North Nineteen, Holloway

Paid my first visit last week and can confirm previous comments, very freindly landlord, decent crowd, very good choice and quality of beer and nicely done out. Didn't try the food, but what I saw coming out of the kitchen looked very nice. Well worth a visit and I'll be back to try the food.

2 Jul 2009 13:26

The William IV, Leyton

Paid my first visit since they started brewing their own beer - Brodies. Had tried the beer before so was looking forward to it. However, this place surpassed my expectations. Where do I start? Great atmosphere, friendly locals, very nice Thai and English food. The beer? superb the mild was terrific as was the red and the 7.1% porter was so good it was dangerous! They had guest ales on too including a bitter from Pitfield. If that wasn't good enough they had a load of their bottle conditioned beer in the fridge - some of which is now in my Fridge! A decent old style jazz band in the corner added to the evening. The fact that one of the owners took the time to have a chat to me and my mate, both a little worse for wear just topped the evening off.

Great pub, deserves to do well and on last nights evidence it is!

29 May 2009 10:43

Wheatsheaf, Southwark

Great to have it back - broader range of beers was great and the food we had was very nice. Like the new location and feel of the place.

22 May 2009 11:13

The King Charles I, Kings Cross

Interesting litle boozer. Brodie's ales were excellent, nice chatty staff and clientel. Nice to have a half decent pub so close to Kings Cross.

19 May 2009 22:28

The Salisbury, Harringay

Was in for Sunday lunch with family. Food was excellent as was the sevice. Kids portions were too much for them - all the better for the hoover (Dad). As for the beer - well the Preservation Ale from the Castle Rock brewery was a welcome addition to the always well kept Fullers beers.

20 Apr 2009 12:55

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

In for the first time in a while on Saturday night. Decent atmosphere, good service and the Bomabardier was excellent. Was glad when this place opened and its maintained its position as a cracking little bar restaurant on a street well catered for by excelent kebab shops but few decent bar restaurants.

14 Apr 2009 13:53

The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay

Went in on Saturday night for the first time in ages. Very pleasant bar maid insisted on us trying the various real ales on offer - Camerons Nimos XXXX and Caledonian Raspberry were very good. Nice atmosphere, good service an all round decent boozer.

14 Apr 2009 11:22

The Bree Louise, Euston

Really nice pub, great selection of well kept beers. A word of warning though don't order a pie - its not a pie its a pot of poor stew with a ridiculous bit of over puffed pastry on the top. Even on a special price of 5 this isn't good value.

16 Mar 2009 20:43

The Pembury Tavern, Hackney

Was in last night before the Spurs v Boro game. They had just started their beer festival so the choice was awesome and the quality brilliant as ever. Had the most home made cornish pasty I've ever had in my life. In fact I'm pretty sure it was made in a home that had no idea what a cornish pasty was. Strange it may have been, but it was huge and tasty and a good price. Can't fault this place, in fact given what happened later and the fact that I'm a Boro fan I think I should have stayed all night!

5 Mar 2009 11:48

The Britannia, Borough

Was in at lunctime, first visit. Nice cosey pub, food very good, had the home made burger that was home made, very tasty and good value. Other meals being served look equally as good. Only one real ale on, loads of malt whiskeys. Landlord/barmen very freindly and nice local atmosphere. Would go back.

27 Jan 2009 14:57

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

Paid yet another visit to this place last night. Food was excellent, service good and cheerful, beer selection seems to be getting better, if that's possible. Glad to see it busy, it really is worth going out of the way for.

23 Jan 2009 11:24

The Chesham Arms, Homerton

Very nice back street pub. Freindly barman, decent locals and the three real ales on were very good. Didn't try the food, but the menu looked good and the smells from the kitchen were very tempting.

16 Jan 2009 10:35

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

plaintalkingdrinker I've read a few of your reviews - I wouldn't call your talking plain, unless you missed out 'nonsense'!

13 Jan 2009 16:14

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Stopped in on the way home last night. Really good pints of RCH Pitchfork and Nethergate Old Growler. Service was quick and pleasant, as ever all life was here - good mix, decent atmosphere.

10 Jan 2009 13:42

The Blue Anchor, Hammersmith

Seems like a decent pub. Had three real ales on - Doom Bar, Timoth Taylor Landlord and Brains SA, tried them all, all well kept. Food was pretty good and not that pricey given the location. Overall a pretty good place.

16 Dec 2008 13:46

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town

Was in again on Friday night. Food great, beer great, service great, atmosphere great. One quibble though. They seemed to stop serving at 11.00pm on the dot and if there was any bells or calling of time I missed them. Never a nice end to a night wandering up to the bar looking for a pint, being turned away unceremoniously without even knowing time had been called. Small issue and if I missed the bells I'll take my moan back!

29 Nov 2008 13:26

The Bree Louise, Euston

Still like this pub, can't say the decor would put me off. Good beer, decent staff, 50p off a pint for CAMRA members the decor would have to be really bad to knock a dent in this!

29 Nov 2008 13:23

The Hornsey Tavern, Hornsey

Was in this evening - two ales straight from the barrel - very nice. Clearly trying hard to serve good beer add this to what was always a good honest local and I'm a fan!

23 Nov 2008 21:43

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

Visited for second time yesterday and as a result uped my score. This is a really nice, welcoming pub. Add to that the great range of draft and bottled German beers all served brilliantly by pleasant and efficient bar staff and you're on to a winner! The food is excellent. As a meat eater I had more choice than my veggie colleague, but he was more than happy with the german noodles. Will be back as often as possible.

21 Nov 2008 09:15

The Royal Oak, Borough

Popped in at lunch time, the first time for ages. Had a very good pint of Mild, a chat with the Landlord about the Fullers beer they are now stocking - emphasis on the seasonal stuff. Tried a pint of the London Porter which was very, very good. An interesting, seasonal Fullers brew to compliment the excellent Harveys beers makes this place even better, if that's possible!

18 Nov 2008 13:46

The Old Fountain, Old Street

I've never had any thing less than a superb pint in this pub. The beer is top notch as are the locals. The cellar man - Paul really knows his stuff, give it a try you wont be dissapointed!

31 Oct 2008 18:00

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

Popped in to check this place out. Great selection of German beers on draught and in bottles. Erdinger Dunkel at 3.50 for 1/2 a litre bottle was pretty reasonable and I haven't seen it poured so well this side of the channel! Food was good and not too expensive, staff very friendly. It was quiet at lunchtime but enough folk in to make it feel like a pub. Would recommend it.

29 Oct 2008 15:19

The Farmhouse Inn, Dunmow

Very nice country pub. Had three real ales on GK IPA, Old Cannon Brewery Best Bitter anf Mauldon Gold. Tried the last two which were very good. Landlady very pleasant and helpful as were the rest of the staff, locals seemed decent too. Stayed over and the Band B was very good. Would definatley go back and try for Sunday Lunch.

26 Oct 2008 11:21

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town

Was in for the first time last night. Tried three of the real ales, all very good and the food was excellent. Add to that the very pleasant and efficient service and you've got a great pub cum restaurant.

17 Oct 2008 11:09

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Caught this pub the night before the beer festival and the choice and quality of the ales was pretty good then! Great little local, very good bar staff and nice feel to the place. Went in on the first day of the festival also and wished I didn't have to get the train out of Portsmouth that evening. I'll be back.

4 Oct 2008 23:41

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Popped in on Friday afternoon between the Hole in the Wall and the King Street Tavern. Not a native of Portsmouth I was just having a stroll. This pub was very freindly, the mild I had was very good, I'd be happy with it as my local.

4 Oct 2008 23:39

Leopold Tavern, Southsea

Was in on Saturday before the Pompy v Boro match. Decent local, serving some grea tlocal micro brews, no food on but happy for you to bring in sandwiches. Bit of a walk to Fratton Park, but well worth it as away fans we felt pretty welcome.

14 Sep 2008 11:14

The Greys, Brighton

Always visit this pub when in Brighton. Food was excellent, service brilliant and beer top notch. Add to this a really nice laid back atmosphere and it really is hard to fault the place.

11 Sep 2008 12:27

The Barley Mow, Brighton

Nice little pub out of the City Centre. Had a great pub lunch, bar staff very freindly and beer from local micros was very nice.

10 Sep 2008 21:06

The Stanley Arms, Portslade

Great little local boozer, decent ale, some from local micros, nice freindly staff, well worth the trip out from Brighton

10 Sep 2008 21:02

The Old Cannon Brewery, Bury St Edmunds

Was in on Saturday night for a school re-union. What a decent place, good beer - their own brewed stuff was excellent, with a wide range of others, good food and excellent service. As has been said before if you are in Bury and fancy a decent pint in decent surroundings you wont do better!

2 Sep 2008 12:29

The Hornsey Tavern, Hornsey

Saw the adds for a mini beer festival so decided to give it another go, see my previous comment. Well they had six beers on, three straight from the cask, tried most of them and they were all very nice. They'd also extended their bottled beer range. A really good idea by the Landlord and particularly as the beer festival is linked to a number of charity fund raising events. Very glad to say that this nice little boozer is back on my list.

7 Jul 2008 10:00

The Rake, London Bridge

What declining standards at the Market Porter?

6 Jul 2008 20:41

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Was in the other night tried two really good guest ales and the staff couldn't have been more efficient or freindly!

4 Jul 2008 10:09

The Wellington, Birmingham

Made my first visit yesterday. Lovely pub, tried three of the 15 beers on all were in top notch condition. The guy behind the bar was chatty and informative. Another great pub for Brum!

2 Jul 2008 22:32

, Digbeth

Not much to be said that hasn't been said already. Great pub, great beer and the staff are top notch.

2 Jul 2008 22:29

The White Swan, Digbeth

Lovely pub, limited range of beers but all very nice, very nice old fashioned place and the staff very freindly. Well worth popping along to before or after a visit to the Anchor down the road.

2 Jul 2008 22:28

Bert's Bar, Edinburgh

Very ggod pies, very good service and the Cally 80 was as good as it gets!

13 Jun 2008 10:10

The Blue Blazer, Edinburgh

Very good selection of ales, freindly service and a nice traditional feel.

13 Jun 2008 10:07

The Royal Oak, Borough

Was in today, the first time for too long. Both the light and dark milds were on top form as was the Olympia. Pubs don't get much better.

23 May 2008 22:02

The Swan, Great Easton

Paid a visit on saturday night. Food was excellent as was the two real ales on - Woodfordes Wherry and Adnams bitter. Have a changing guest beer with a Magpie (Nottingham) beer next up. Very nice freindly place.

18 May 2008 11:55

The Goldsmith Pub and Dining Room, Borough

Now called the Escape. Went in for the first time today. they had Greene King IPA, Adnams Bitter and Hobgoblin on all were well served. The food was very nice. Overall a very nice place. I'll be back.

9 May 2008 15:31

The John Baird, Muswell Hill

Fist visit to this place on Saturday night. We ate in the Black Orchid, Thai restaurant which is attached. Very nice food, reasonably priced and really good service. As for the pub, well it was having a West Country beer festival and the three I tried were very nice. Staff very freindly and efficient. all in all a really nice place to spend an evening.

28 Apr 2008 11:00

The Lade Inn, Kilmahog

Very nice pub, the beers brewed for it are excellent and there is a very good selection of 'real ale in bottles'. Very freindly staff and the food is excellent. Enjoyed the Scottish folk night.

22 Apr 2008 11:31

The Waverley Hotel, Callander

Popped in a couple of times last week. The choice of beer was pretty good and in excellent condition. Freindly barman and decent clientele. Well worth a visit if you find yourself in Callander.

22 Apr 2008 11:29

The Bree Louise, Euston

Very nice pub. Good selection of ales - Adnams Oyster Stout on gravity was stand out for me last night. Seems to be well run, food looks interesting. 50p off a pint for CAMRA members is a nice touch. Will be back.

5 Apr 2008 12:17

The Trinity Arms, Brixton

What a really nice pub. Decent beer - Youngs and Caledonian Deuchars IPA, all very well kept.Food was very good - Steak and ale Pie was a proper pie, crust top and bottom! Freindly and helpful bar staff and a mixed range of punters. Perfect for a few pints before stumbling off up to the Academy.

3 Apr 2008 10:20

The Charles Dickens, Southwark

Very good little pub, food and booze very good. Had a pint of the Twickenham Spring ale at lunchtime which was absolutely delicious. The staff are always very pleasant and efficient, combinmed with an always interesting range of ales makes this a must visit pub.

27 Mar 2008 13:36

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Popped in last night, very decent boozer and the beer quality and range is always spot on. Tried some Red Squirell Mild and Porter last night very, very good.

27 Mar 2008 10:02

The Hornsey Tavern, Hornsey

Always liked this decent honest boozer. However, was in today and all they had on beer wise was some undrinkable Hydes crap and keg Greene King. I'm sorry to say that this pub is now off my list and I'm pretty disapointed.

23 Mar 2008 20:30

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

Ringo_Piece - you need to get out more. The Tollgate is not the best pub in North London, but it's certainly not the worst. You get a great range of clientele in here most nights. The beer is almost always well kept and the bar staff aren't bad at all. Give it another try.

20 Mar 2008 12:30

The Marquess Tavern, Canonbury

Really nice pub. Was in before the Arsenal v Boro game yesterday. Decent beer on handpump and an interesting collection of Scottish Ales in bottles. Only one gripe - 3.50 for a pint of Deuchars IPA? That said staff were good and efficient, food looked very nice, will be back once I've arranged the bank loan!

16 Mar 2008 10:49

The Skinners Arms, Kings Cross

DonDiego - if you came in my pub and used 3/4 of a bottle of hot sauce on your chips I'd charge you! 3/4 of a bottle on chips isn't a condiment its a significant part of the meal!

14 Mar 2008 13:03

St Stephens Tavern, Westminster

What a nice pub. Despite living in London for 15 years I'd never been here. Very good selection of well kept Badger ale and the food was good. Staff very friendly and efficient. Nice touch - got slightly cloudy pint and the landlady was over in a flash apologising, replacing it and giving a lecture on how to serve beer, very nice lady, just like the pub!

4 Mar 2008 16:05

Bierodrome, Angel, Islington

Yes the beer list isn't huge these days, but there's enough decent choices to keep you going. Our mussels ans frites on Saturday were excellent as was the beer and service. If you think of this place as a decent restaurant the prices aren't that bad at all. Will go back.

18 Feb 2008 11:34

The Stage Door, Waterloo

In for the Geordies v Boro match yesterday. Decent beer, good food, good service and a cracking atmosphere. It's the place to be for Boro on the TV!!

4 Feb 2008 12:48

The Alehouse, Reading

TheTranquileye - that's a great story. I'm with the staff on not spoiling decent ale - but that's taking it too far. I think I'll go for my Cider and black elsewhere!

31 Jan 2008 14:52

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge

Decent enough boozer, but the service is terrible, went elsewhere after waiting forever watching two staff struggling and not able to work out who was next.

30 Jan 2008 22:10

Three Compasses, Hornsey

Managed to pop in a couple of times over the Xmas period. Still a very good pub, juke box seems to have been switched up a bit. Beer very good including Red Squirrel London Porter which was very, very good. Bar staff very friendly and very efficient. Best pub in the area by far.

2 Jan 2008 13:13

The Crown and Shamrock Inn, Newtownabbey

Fanatastic old fashioned pub - looks like it hasn't been done up for 50 years! Landlady a really nice freindly person. Had some interesting bottled beers including Belfast ale and some erdinger weiss and Xmas beer - very good. Not mny places like this left.

11 Dec 2007 12:30

The John Hewitt, Belfast

Very nice little bar, Two local real ales on hand pub, more in bottles. Menu looked good. Nice staff, nice atmosphere will be back when next in Belfast.

11 Dec 2007 12:27

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

I've always been prepared to stick up for this place, but tonight the toliets were disgusting. They need to do something about this soon!

6 Dec 2007 22:46

Nags Head, Reading

Well paid my second visit here on the way to the Reading v Boro match. All the beer tried was excellent, Sweeney and Todd pie very nice too. Add to that a bus laid on to the ground for 2 return, freindly locals and great bar staff. In case you couldn't tell I like this place! It was nice to see the place full - great pubs should be!

3 Dec 2007 11:09

McCowans Brewhouse, Edinburgh

Does your mam know you're on her computer?

20 Nov 2007 14:32

11 Nov 2007 10:19

26 Sep 2007 15:09

The Victoria Stakes, Muswell Hill

Went in on Saturday. The beer was excellent Sharps Coaster and Summer Lightning. As for the food that was really, really good. Service couldn't have been better and sitting out in the conservatory couldn't have been nicer. Top pub abd top restaurant.

28 Aug 2007 10:09

The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay

So this might not be the most antiseptic pub in London. BUT - the beer is always good, Pride, Pedigree and Adnams Broadside on Sunday, always a friendly laid back atmosphere and the bar staff are cheerful and effecient. Nothing wrong with this place at all.

28 Aug 2007 10:07

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

In again yesterday before the Fulham - Boro match. all TTs on, the three I tried were great. Decent food - bacan and sausage bagette's. A top pub!

19 Aug 2007 17:57

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Paid my first visit here last night. What a great pub! Had all the Timothy Taylor range on and in great condition plus two guests. Nice relaxed place with freindly efficient staff, will be back for sure!

1 Aug 2007 10:25

Three Compasses, Hornsey

I just don't get the 'rude staff' bit - I've been in loads of times and find them freindly and efficient. Beer is always good and good choice, decent relaxed atmosphere.

6 Jul 2007 16:38

The Toll Gate, Hornsey

This is a decent Weatherspoons, mixed crowd, mostly decent staff and a good range of beer well kept. It's not the poshest pub you'll ever find but it does wjhat it says on the tin!

6 Jul 2007 14:40

The Salisbury, Harringay

This is a great pub badly spiolt by terrible service. For my money a walk over the road to the Green Ladder, the Old Ale Emporium and a bit further to the Oakdale are increasingly the better options. That's a shame by the way because this should be every bit as good as them.

6 Jul 2007 14:34

The Oakdale Arms, Harringay

Went in on Thursday good range of Milton beers and others on. There was also a very lively quiz going on. The Oakdale seems to be back to its best.

6 Jul 2007 11:54

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

Popped back in last night, first time for a while. Had a great pint of Landlord the food looked great, really nice atmosphere and staff. this great newish adddition to Green Lanes is keeping up the good work.

6 Jul 2007 11:42

The Bee, Burnham

Decent enough little pub - went in with a group of colleagues staying in a near by hotel. Three real ales on, all in good condition. pleasant barmaid/landlady and locals freindly.

4 Jul 2007 16:21

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Went back in for the first time in years on Saturday - excellent. Beer was on top form as you'd expect and a superb black pudding sandwich for 2 - it doesn't get much better!

21 May 2007 13:49

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

Went in for the first time on Saturday. This is a really nice place - beer's good, service very good and the food we tried was very good. They rally have done a good job of creating a beerhouse under the streets of London. Will be back!

21 May 2007 13:47

The Garden Ladder, Harringay

A new pub on a stretch of road more noted for its excellent Turkish and Kurdish Kebab shops. Used to be an Indian restaurant. Friendly place with very good and reasonably priced food, decent choice of beer with at least two real ales. This is a real adition to the area and with the Salisbury over the road and the Oakdale 10 minutes walk away us locals almost have a pub crawl!

19 Feb 2007 14:56
