| I used this pub for a number of years until Wetherspoons decided to pull out and on the first evening it reopened under new management I walked into the bar and was greeted with the uusual trash 'music' from loud speakers, so I turned round and walked straight out never to return. | I visited this only infrequently when it was a Wetherspoons; whilst it was on the small side for a Wetherspoons it was always tolerable. No more. It's now called the Nanobyte bar although on the inside it's still very pubbish; little attempt has been made to modernise it since its Wetherspoons days; it reminded me of when the Hogshead in Islington closed and some jokers ran a pub called 'Shade' (using five of the Hogshead letters!) for a few months before it went bust. Loud, rubbish music being played to a half empty bar. Some real ale on, but my pint was served very short, and the bar staff lacked the English to understand that I wanted them to top it up (we got there in the end). | No longer a Wetherspoons, and this is definitely not an improvement: more of a disaster. From the time Wetherspoons opened it, until the time they dumped it and got out [WHY???], it became the meeting place and base of operations for a whole crowd of us: freelance veterans and victims of the British Film �Industry�. Of course it was usually dreadful on a Friday night, [that applied to the whole of the West End and still does], but between Monday and Thursday, it was OK. Poverty and lack of work had driven us out of our older hangouts, but the Sixpence enabled us still to keep a foot in the door of Soho. We were well aware of its limitations, but we were also aware that in there a drink cost about half as much as anywhere else in the area. We used to refer to it affectionately as �The Shithouse�, or more politely, �The Works Canteen, or �The Labour Exchange�. I actually did get one or two jobs while drinking in there. Ironically, over the years, it began to take on more of the atmosphere of the old Soho we loved than our original hangouts: The George, The Ship, The Blue Posts, The Star and Garter, The Dog and Duck, etc. etc. [all decent pubs, but SO expensive now, and full of young rich arseholes]. The old farts often turned out to be very interesting people if you could overcome your prejudices long enough to talk to them. Rather amazingly, it became a real local. It was one of the last bastions of the old Soho scene: and now it has fallen. I�ve been there a couple of times since the change, and felt very upset. None of the old crowd goes there now. We�ve all tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, and been driven away. The new management seem not to have the slightest idea. The beer is rank, the service slow and rude, and they�ve put in the usual imbecile loud crap piped music. The atmosphere has gone. Heartbreaking. Don�t go there. M.O.G. - 24 Aug 2006 16:53 |
