After a visit to the Llantwit Major Rugby Club to the east of the centre, I moved on to the centre of the village and started my 3 pub crawl with the Old Swan Inn. It turned out to be the best of the 3. Initial thoughts were that this was going to be a disappointing visit, with all handpulls unclipped. The old interior was impressive though. One of the rooms being used as a crèche was less impressive. Underterred, I enquired about ales only to be told there was a beer festival in the garden. Ales were Wadworth IPA & Bishop's Tipple, Wantsum 1381, Muirhouse Something Hoppy, Naylors Velvet, Black Country Fireside & Great Heck Proverbs 31.6. 3 ciders and a perry were all from Gwynt y Ddraig - Happy Daze, Black Dragon, Dog Dancer & Two Trees. I was the only person outside in the driving rain. But at least it was undercover. Drinks were dispensed in plastic glasses - maybe they were expecting me to riot, or maybe the local constabulary is over-zealous. Nevertheless, a very good pub. Watch your step as you exit the front door. You'll walk straight out into the road. I chose the rear door, mainly because I didn't fancy negotiating the screaming babies and their prams. blue_scrumpy - 22 Aug 2016 20:26 |
I'm seldom moved to post comments on site like this but this has to be the worst food experience I have ever encountered at any pub...anywhere! Have to admit that the pub itself has plenty of charm, being the oldest in Llantwit Major ,but after deciding to eat there with my partner and our two children we came away feeling as if we had been ripped off with poor quality overpriced food that would have been better placed in a 'greasy spoon' cafe somewhere off the motorway. Too much to gripe about in a review likie this but in essence we paid 4.50 for a ham and cheese baguette...not even a full sze one at that but one of those half size rolls you usually get with soup, we also had two susage and mash kids meals at 5.25 each where the cook (note I didn't use the word 'Chef') decided to mash new potatos and serve them with 'Bullit hard' peas...gravy might have helped disguise the taste of the cheap 'cereal' susages they had used but that would have been a bit too much to hope for! My partner had fish and chips (9.00's worth!) the fish was burned on the outside and still liquid batter on the inside...the whole experience was apalling. Needless to say, the pub will be a lot older than its name suggests before we venture near its doors again. jigabout - 19 Apr 2011 02:21 |
It looks the part but after waiting an interminable time at the bar instead of jumping in to get served I let these two Yanks go before me and then endured a further wait while they dithered about what they wanted to drink before then deciding to order food. A full 10 minutes plus wait and then as I was about to get my long awaited pint someone came up to complain about the food being undercooked - which of course in a food orientated establishment as this takes precedence over someone who just wants a pint of beer. Managed to get my pint in before more people came up to complain about under cooked food (just). Not somewhere to go to if you want a pint at busy food times (actually judging on this visit - not somewhere to go forfood at busy food times either). The Thos Guest pint of Cobblers was nothing special - certainly not 'beer guide' material. Not somewhere I ever intending going back to. anonymous - 10 Jul 2010 23:30 |
Visited on Bank Holiday weekend and yes it was busy. Best pub in Llantwit I'd say. Great old building and friendly staff. Had a nice pint of Cottage Spring too. triumph - 26 May 2009 11:52 |
Stone-flagged bar fronting the main road is the best bit of this place which still feels like a traditional pub despite the omnipresence of food. Can get very busy and food quality is variable though generally OK. New 'gastro pub' virtually next door might take a bit of steam out of it on Saturday nights. AdamAdamant - 17 Jul 2006 20:30 |
