I note there is a proposal to substantially redevelop a surviving example of Victorian London and in particular demolish the Still & Star public house. This is not a typical pub that you would find in the Square Mile. It is a community hub and amenity, profitable business, and part of our heritage. The pub has two dart boards with regular competitive dart fixtures, provides refreshment and social outlet for local residents as well as commuters. The ale is well kept and reasonably priced. People from all backgrounds and incomes feel equally at home in this pub. The décor is such that you almost feel like you are in a rural village rather than at the centre of a metropolis. If anyone reading this hasn’t yet had the pleasure, please visit this pub for yourself. This kind of pub, once demolished can never be replicated or replaced. Richard_ReadingFC - 18 Aug 2016 11:09 |
The Still and Star pub is under threat of demolition from developers. The Victorian Society is holding a 'drink in' at the pub on Tuesday 16th August. From around 6.30 there will be a talk about how to object to the demolition plans and hear about the threats to pubs all over the country dealt with by the Victorian Society. Loved this pub from the moment I walked in to see a large cat seated at the bar on a barstool. Tucked away in a side alley opposite Aldgate tube station, this is a pub for people who loves pubs. Great pint of Young's and a really characterful spot. A hidden gem indeed. strangetorpor - 19 Feb 2016 18:54 |
Sought out this little beauty on the basis of good reviews on this site & elsewhere. Proper pub is the simplest description I can give: prices cheapish (my pint of Pride was 3.80), friendly people on both sides of the bar. A couple of groups of blokes in suits (it is a blokey sort of place) & one or two individuals meant the small bar was pleasantly full on a wet day. A nice pub feel about the place, I'll be back. Another good pub with fine ales. The area is turning to be quite a purple patch for good beers and great staff. The outside area is very large whilst the bar is tiny. Not too sure how the pub copes with the winter but it sure does a good trade during the heated months. allornothing - 7 Aug 2014 12:45 |
