user reviews of Bryggeriet Apollo, Copenhagen

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Very pleasant. Sat in the sunshine, people watching and drank a glass of their Scottish Ale. I preferred the Mikkellers which was a five minute walk from here, but oddly not listed here.

Big light restaurant where they brew their own beers . The oktoberfest beer was good but very expensive. lovely looking copper tuns and a clean loo with copper sinks was a nice touch but there are better places in Copenhagen to drink beer. Food menu limites to lots of meat and meat .

Busy place on a busy street, and I suspect that the brew-pub aspect is of only limited interest to many of the customers as the food menus on display outside are far more obvious than anything to do with their beer. However, once inside, various parts of the brewing process are clearly visible. Limited range available, but their chocolate stout packed a punch at 6.8%. In many ways, more of a restaurant than a pub, and hideously expensive at 66 DKR (about 7.50) for a half-litre glass...

Somewhat resembling a greenhouse, this brew-pub is light, airy and generally quiet. However live jazz is staged on the first Sunday of each month from 1730. A glass roof and walls rise to form arches above a tiled floor whilst the rather ornate brickwork and pillars of a building that once stood on the site remain behind the bar. The brewing copper stands in the middle of the drinking/dining area. Two beers are brewed; a regular Pilsner with a nutty malty flavour and a second (seasonal) beer. At the moment a delicious chocolatey Amber Lager". Beer, pub and brewery somewhat resemble Zero Degrees in Blackheath.

Food served lunchtimes Mon-Sat plus all evenings from 1730-2200. Those wishing to sit down to have a few beers without eating should visit outside these times, but remember the pub is open until 1am every day except Sunday.

Candles and tungsten lighting, including carbon filament lamps over the bar, afford a warm atmosphere in the evenings. There is some outdoor seating with illuminated tables, but it was just a bit too chilly on the night I visited (25/09/2003).

Another point to note: beer in Denmark is not cheap. Half a litre (a metric pint) of Pilsner is a FIVER in English money, and the seasonal beer is 5.40. Dear even taking into account the percentages of 4.6 and 5.7 respectively.

However, in my view Apollo is still a good all-round bar that definitely merits a visit.
