Large-ish pub which actually defines the eating and drinking areas (we sat on the boundary table). Not a bad pub for it's size/owner etc had a decent drop of one of those Formby brews.

Certainly quite impressive for a Greene King pub. It had a good range of 11 ales on, plus Old Rosie cider. The pub is a large affair. If it has had a refurb, it has at least done it tastefully. Ales were well kept and service is good. Although we didn't find out about the 10p per pint CAMRA discount until the 3rd round. Ales were Bowland Oak, George Wright Blue Moon & Pipe Dream, Ruddles Best, Peerless Dark Arts & Triple Blond, Sunny Republic Shark Head, Ossett Silver King, Thornbridge Sequoia, Red Willow Headless & Greene King IPA. Nice place, but a bit out of the way to make a regular haunt.

Extensively refurbished in 2012, the Freshie is probably Greene King's (though the brewery tries to hide the fact it is their pub, going for the freehouse feel) finest pub.

In the region of 14 real ales on the bar, mainly from independent breweries, with a few GK products, and very well sourced- Liverpool Organic, Leeds, Oakham etc.

The function room has been incorporated into the pub and is mainly used for diners. A dartboard is retained as is plenty of tables for those who just want a drink.

Dogs welcome, children welcome, food served all day, regular beer festivals, weekly quiz night, 1/3 pint boards available, friendly and attentive staff. The Freshie shows what Greene King is capable of when it allows itself to try something different.

Well done to all those involved.
