user reviews of Manor House, Royston

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A poor Wetherspoon in a poor town for ale and pubs. It's the only GBG entry in the town but the ale I had (a Canadian IPA) was garbage which I ended up leaving. Like a kind of McDonalds/Creche/Cheesey Charlies. Maybe the bank holiday brought out the hordes of brats. There's a clown on here thinks I shouldn't criticise Wetherspoons and it's the same old same old comments - well maybe because I end up being misled (in this case by the GBG) and others because the company I'm with drags me into the places but still going to make my comment - if people don't like them then start your own 'pro-life Wetherspoons' comments - it is a "free" country after all - innit?

As the name suggests this used to be a Manor House & its now a very large well appointed Wetherspoons.

Busy when I arrived at 5.30pm on a Tuesday and got busier during the 90 minutes I spent here. As mentioned below the layout is different to a lot of other ‘spoons in that there is not a large main open area but instead many smaller rooms all on one level.

2 banks of 5 hand pumps, each with 4 ales on with a couple having the same on, so the choice was down to 5 ales. All the usual Wetherspoons brands of lager, cider and keg / craft beer also available. My pints of Arkell's Sir Neol @ 5.0% and Caledonian Cold Comfort went down well.

To the rear is a large garden which was mainly being used as a smoking area due to it being December and pretty chilly.

According to a pal of mine that visited several other pubs in the town on the same day this was by far the best. I would tend to agree but then The Manor House was the only one I visited.

Visited two years ago - soon after its grand opening.
Found it to be comfortable, many small rooms rather than one large area.
Beer range was adequate but not vast.
Two years on and pretty much ditto above.

The food on today's visit needed to be a few degrees hotter.
It soon got cold and served on a luke-warm plate did not help much.
Only three beers worth trying.

Staff are friendly and quick to serve.
So far the best pub I have found in Royston.

Good to hear that Norwich City fans are getting out and about. OTBC! I pooped into the Manor House yesterday and was quite impressed with what I found. I sampled a pint of Hobgoblin Gold and a pint of Woodforde's Once Bittern. Both were in fine condition and I was sorely tempted to sample more, but I had to be making tracks unfortunately. I shall return.

A new, better than average, Wetherspoons conversion with the usual good range of beer. It was very busy on a Saturday night with a mixed clientele including a lady in her 80's wearing a Norwich FC shirt. Come on you Yellows!
