user reviews of Commercial Tavern, Shoreditch

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Semi-circular corner pub that looks like a traditional local from the outside. Once you've worked out which door gets you in, the interior feels very worn, but has plenty of strange modern features to keep you entertained. Very shabby chic. As Mappiman says, the selection of 4 ales is decent - Great Heck Navigator, Magic Rock Ringmaster, Oakham Citra & Harbour Cornish Bitter. The fridges behind the bar have an excellent selection of bottles. A rather strange place. But, I quite liked it.

Good Beer Guide 2019 Tick.

So damn dark inside, I thought it was closed on approach. Not helped by a couple of gentlemen of the street drinking cans and smoking non tobacco cigarettes on the door step.

But open it is, and inside is a traditional pub layout, wooden flooring, furniture, single room, bar at front. Didn't recognise any of the hand pulls on but the New York, New York was worthy of inclusion in the GBG.

Avoid - was today confronted by a camp looking 60's throwback in dungarees who asked me to leave the pub for no valid reason. Not knowing who this clown was I stayed put but the more rational barman confirmed he owned the buildling. I took a refund and left. Pub OK but 'owner' either high on drugs or serious mental issues.

Nice pub - choice of 4 real ales, bohemian style pub, bit dark downstairs but light and airy upstairs. Bit chintzy for blokes but by the same token a good place to take your lady so you can have a few beers.
