We didn't enjoy this quite as much as the Bentley Brook Inn. But they're actually both very close to one another and both are popular with walkers. The Coach & Horses was the more intimate of the two. But I thought that the warm welcome wasn't quite there. Ales were Marstons Pedigree, Blue Monkey Right Turn Clyde & Whim Hartington Bitter. The pub is not too far from Dovedale.

Annual visit to the Coach and Horses with Mrs Monk and just as good as ever, and just as mystifying why the local CAMRA branch continue to exclude it from the beer guide. Lovely traditional bar area with low beams and two fires, with a tasteful modern restaurant area to the rear. We made two visits, on Thursday lunchtime and Friday evening, with the lunchtime visit proving the busier for the pub. The two ales were Pedigree which is the permanent ale and the guests were Slaters Top Totty and Hartington Bitter, I sampled all three, Mrs Monk stuck to the Pedigree, all were excellent. We ate on both occasions and the food was very good. Very, very good pub. 7.5/10

Black Hole's Cosmic and Marston's Pedigree were the cask ales on offer on Friday. The pub itself has a flagstoned front bar with pine furniture, aubergine-coloured walls, wooden posts and beams and a woodburner and two even smarter dining areas, one a continuation of the bar but at the rear of the pub and the other seemed to be a smaller, possibly private, separate dining room. Somewhat incongruous Massive Attack coming out of the speakers but perhaps laid-back is the aim. No dogs according to people we spoke to the next day. Better than the Bentley Brook Inn and one to re-visit.

Took my 16 of my extended family for lunch after a local walk in Dovedale Wood. Pub was very busy but we had reserved and they had a really nice area laid out for us. Service was really friendly (although they were a bit slow to take our order) and the atmosphere in the pub was great. They had two beers on, marstons pedigree and a local ale, both were in excellent condition. Food was very good, really impressed. I had smoked haddock on a leek and potato mash which was perfectly cooked with a delicious, creamy sauce. Top food. Only drawback to this pub is it's location on a main road with nowhere that inviting to sit outside. I would say perfect for the winter months though, really nice inside with low hanging beams and open fires.

Annual visit to this impressive pub for Mrs Monk and I during our stay near Thorpe Cloud. Tried the Pedigree and the guests which changed from Thursday to Friday, Abbeydale Daily Bread which was excellent as was the other whose name escapes me, Pedigree also very good. Good food though the Friday evening service was a bit slow and probably the food was not up to the standard of our visit the day before. However, I still can't work out why this pub isn't in the CAMRA guide as the beer is always very good. 7.5 out of 10
