user reviews of the White Lion, Wherwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I was reasonably impressed by this village pub. The village itself is picturesque and is apparently famous for its trout fishing. The White Lion is a good size with 2 or 3 different rooms and a large outdoor drinking area, including a marquee. There were 3 ales - Landlord, Doom Bar & Atlantic. But surprisingly there were also 2 real ciders from Orchard Pig - Philosopher & Maverick. Service felt a little blunt and I suspect the pub relies more on its food trade than for drinks. But better than I had expected.

A fair sized place with several rooms and a large, partly covered, outdoor seating area. Pretty busy yesterday lunchtime mainly with people eating. The Flowerpots Bitter was in good form. Also had Timothey Taylor Landlord, Harveys Sussex and Sharps Doombar on offer. £3.80 a pint a bit steep though.

First the good points. The beer, I had Harvey's Best, was it fantastic condition. The pub was clean, tidy and well decorated. In fact it looked like the new(ish) encumbrances have spent some money.

Now the bad points. There were far too many staff, 3 behind the bar a waitress (or two),a chef and KP and one or two other 'nondescript' people running about. The 'hosts' were more interested in 'swanning around lording it' with their friends than running the pub!!! It's a crying shame, this pub has promise despite it's out of the way location. You get the impression that the current owners are only playing. With experienced food operators this would be a great destination house. Serving quality beer.

3/10 from me and it's only the quality of the beer that earns it that.
