The wife and I stayed here for 2 nights recently.

The interior features amazing tiles on the floor in the entrance hall area, there's also a Yorkshire Rose. The walls also have lots of ceramic tiles, these are original.

Map of old York on the wall and some very decorative lights throughout the bar areas.

There is one L shaped bar which serves the 3 different rooms, with the main bar area being at the front on Lawrence St.

6 pumps that on my visit were dispensing 4 ales and 1 cider. I opted for a pint of Roosters Der Kaiser @ 4.8%.

Food looked good with plenty of choice.

Great location for getting into town by foot and equally as easy for driving, there's ample parking at the rear.

I like the layout of this pub - multi-roomed with a central servery offering a few cask ales (I tried Thorne Gold which was OK but apparently they have since stopped brewing) The barmaid(manageress?) was very friendly and seemed to run the place on her own apart from the chef. I had some food which was perfectly edible if not "haute cuisine". (The ice cream was good) TV's were on but sound was turned down.
With the Rook and the Waggon in the same street this makes for a tidy little pub crawl and although CAMRA officionados will direct you to the other two pubs I felt this one was worth a pint!

Not sure about the new ownership. Used to have consistently crap beer, decent food, and a good atmosphere. Still has crap beer, although I noted a slight improvement from a very low base. However, it now has crap food too (stone cold soup, and everything was crop-dusted with paprika, presumably for artistic reasons?) and to boot no atmosphere whatsoever. Unless you're there for the football on sky, the Rook across the road is a no brainer.

I spent three happy years in York and consider the Rose and Crown my spiritual home. I'll never forget the pleasure of finding a pint of Adnams north of Nottingham!

Beer is nearly always on good form in here and the atmosphere reasonably decent. Haven't been in for a while, but apparently there is a bit of a contraversial move in having CCTV fitted in the ladies toilets, as drug abuse has taken place there recently.
