Great view of the Minster from the garden, and a decent pint of guzzler.

I'm pleased we booked a table in one of the back rooms so we could enjoy a decent lunch and a choice of 4 real ales way from the hurly burly of York at the weekend. Pleasant staff and decent quality - prices seemed reasonable, but we are from "down south" where everything is expensive! Recommended.

Not a pub we were planning to visit. But we thought we would give it a go as we were passing and it had been recommended to us by the landlord of the Minster Inn. It lies just inside one of the city gates. There is a small front bar and another couple of tiny rooms. But the highlight appears to be the popular garden at the rear, which acts as a suntrap and has views of York Minster. Everybody was sitting outside and there is an outdoor bar and barbecue. The ale range was fairly good - York Guzzler, Phoenix Black Bee, Black Sheep Best Bitter, Saltaire Raspberry Blonde & Old Mill Blonde Bombshell. Cider was Rosie's Pig.

This used to be the best pub in York by a county mile and you paid for this through the beer which was always the priciest in the city. Thing is you didn't mind because of the quality of the beer, the incredible building, great food, awesome staff, interesting and friendly regulars. Always busy, always something going on. This pub just had that little something. Unfortunately a change of management has pushed the prices up by another 30 pence in a year, I went in today and the price had gone up by another 10 pence in one jump, two weeks after the budget cut beer duty! No other pub in York has risen like this that I know of, along with all the staff changes, poor quality of beer (another recent addition!), awful beer choice (nearly always pale, below 4% and always local, not one from elsewhere in the country), and general feeling of doom hanging around the place I'm missing it from here on in. Damned shame.
