Average beer choice but it keeps the old timers that frequent the place happy. A must visit if just for the gorgeous Victorian interior.

A large room of a pub with a half moon bar. There were 4 ales on, Bombardier, Lancaster Chestnut red, Red Star Formby IPA and Thwaites Wainwright. The Formby IPA I had was quite nice and well kept and cost 3.05 which isn't an alright price to pay. There are a few fruit machines and a pub quiz trivia machine, horse racing on the tellies, you may be put off by the CCTV. It depends what you are looking for really. In my book fair enough to them, they may have had trouble before and they are giving ales from local brewery a try which taste decent at reasonable prices. This is one I would come back to, why not. The only real shame is most people were drinking the keg beers, but the ale was still in good form.

Paid a return visit to the Central yesterday as the 2nd of 10 pubs. There are still 4 real ales on tap. Yesterday was Wells Bombardier Glorious English & Try Time, Red Star Lakota & Thwaites Wainwright. Opposite Central station and near the main shopping area of Liverpool, this is a fairly handy place to visit. The interior is also one of the best in Liverpool. But the beer range can be bettered in so many other Liverpool pubs.

My first pub on this visit to Liverpool & it was a good one to start with. Glorious interior, all glass & dark wood, & a friendly bar lady who allowed me to photograph it all. She also took a snap of me enjoying a pint of Thwaites Wainwright (2.80 and very good) and as a photographer she made a good bar person.

The Central Commercial Hotel on Ranelagh Street is another superb architectural gem with a Grade 2 listing. Built by the original Cain’s Brewery, (who also built Liverpool’s famous Philharmonic Dining Rooms) the interior has large etched glass mirrors, side by side, on every wall together and a high, beautifully crafted plasterwork ceiling and dome. It is well worth a visit just to admire the interior. Four real ales were available when I visited last week: Threakston Best Bitter, Thwaites’ Wainwright and Lancaster Bomber and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin. I opted for the Wainwright was tip-top and at £2.60 a pint is excellent value for a city centre pub and was served by a pleasant barman.
