user reviews of the Green Dragon, Wymondham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Green Dragon is the oldest pub in Wymondham and one of the oldest in the country. It is also the best pub in the town and is a stone's throw from the Abbey. It's a lovely old building with 3 downstairs rooms and an upstairs room too. Unfortunately the place was so packed that there was no room to enjoy a drink. A few people were dining. But most people appeared to be there for the ales. A birthday part was in full swing upstairs. The ale choice was Brentwood Chocwork Orange, Oakham Scarlet Macaw and the Green Dragon house ale (I believe from Marstons). I retreated to the courtyard at the side of the pub to consume my half of Chocwork Orange. There is also a beer garden here. Very nice pub.

Cosy old pub. Needed a few more drinkers vs v diners and the beers were a bit Marstons-ish i.e. samey but the Newby Wyke beer was excellent. Just the one micro brewery beer I think.

The Wherry was okay but this is a diners rather than a drinker's pub and if you aren't eating there isn't really any place for you.

Have just returned from a short break near Wymondham and what a joy to discover this place! Four well kept real ales on pump (I put a dent in a keg of Green Jack's Trawlerboys on my visits) as well as a keg mild. They also stock over 25 single malt whiskies. We had dinner one evening and as mentioned in another review the portions were generous and the food outstanding. The new owners, Justin and David, as well as barman Finny, were very gracious and welcoming. I can't say enough about this place so if you are ever in the neighbourhood you should definitely make it a point to visit. I'll be back!

Visited in mid-December 2009. Beautiful, historic building (built in 1473). Lovely, gracious hosts, who recently took over running the pub. Real ales on tap. Food was delicious (with generous portions). On our first visit, we learned that they had 3 rooms for rent, so we checked out of the place we were staying in (in another town), and checked in at the Green Dragon. The rooms are in the newer part. We stayed in the room with the horsehair bed (very comfortable). While the rooms are not as unique as the main part of the pub itself, what a treat to just walk upstairs at the end of the day, after enjoying the fire and your favorite beverage. And, then waking up in the morning and walking downstairs into a historic pub. Hope that wasn't our only visit!
