The lady wife and I visited this place while on holiday early in the year. As GrahamH says the painting and narrative on the walls are worth seeing. The pub itself is popular with locals and can get noisy when the pool table, TV and jukebox are in action. Never-the-less the bar staff are friendly and we never felt uncomfortable. We ate there one night and the bar food was nothing to write home about but was okay. However the beer is, IMHO, quite wonderful, St. Austell Proper Job.....gravity dispense! For this reason alone I would recommend visiting but with the shipwreck associations it is definitely worth dropping by.

Great food, small quieter restaurant for those intimate dinners. Booking essential to be certain of a seat. Good selection of wines and beers. Large easily accessible car park opens onto a side road.
Thoroughly recommended.

A huge looking place on a large plot of land.
I have to say that i didn't feel that inspired by the place really.
The drinks were average and inside the place felt a bit tired and bland.
The beer garden goes 3/4 of the way around the pub with many benches catching the sun from all angles.
The painting of the shipwrecked "Bencoolen is impressive and worth a closer look.

Average pub in town.

It's worth visiting this pub simply to view the painting on the wall. It's of the shipwreck of the Bencoolen sailing ship in 1862 and there is another wall with a painted narrative of how it went down. It's truly a museum piece. We stayed there; we were walking the coastal path and they offered us the top flat even for one night, even though they don't do bb as a routine. Very nice menu and good range of beer in top condition with friendly bar staff. Lots of locals in the pub. They deserve to do well in this run down town.
