| How sad to learn that the Artichoke has closed. My Grand Father, Ernest Spicer, was the Licencee during the 40's and I have many happy childhood memories of it, having been born in Tonbridge in 1947, I spent many holidays with "Nan & Grandad" at "The Choke". My last visit was in Spring 1989 when I took my two uncles, Ken Spicer & Michael Spicer, (sons of Ernest) on a sentimental journey together with their wifes (my aunts) Margaret & Ann Spicer. Sadly Ken, Margaret & Ann are no longer with us but Micheal is still living in Scotland. | The Artichoke has, sadly, been a private house for at least 5 years now - probably more. I don't know how the planning authorities operate; I had always been led to believe that to be granted change of use the onus was on the applicant to prove that the business was not viable. Few pubs in Kent were more viable than The Artichoke, but that didn't stop them, and now it's gone the way of so many others. earlydrinker - 7 Jul 2008 22:25 |
