user reviews of the Crown, Dyrham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Crown is conveniently located just off the M4 and makes a change from the usual motorway fare. However, with the pub only half full, our food took around an hour to arrive. At least one table left in protest at the slow service during this time. However, when the food arrived it was tasty and plentyfull and the waiter even brought us several extra peices of fish, shame it took quite so long to arrive.

Beer good, decor good.

However we ordered some food - Fish & Chips at 11.50 a throw - when it came, the portion of fish was about a third of the size of a fillet, the chips were clearly oven chips (and underdone) and there were a few leaves of very ordinary-looking salad. We complained about the size of the fish portions and the waitress came and went a couple of times and told us that was their normal portion size and there was nothing she could do.

She eventually offered a discount of 10% (1.50!) but would not increase the portion size. The manager did not come to apologise to us and unfortunately we sent the food back and went elsewhere. We don't mind paying 11.50 for good food but not for a small amount of rubbish.

Stopped here on the way back to Dorset from the Fishquard ferry. The food was (we both thought) exceptionally good, the service was attentive and the beers well kept (a change from the almost-mandatory Guinness in Ireland). If I lived nearer, I would certainly consider coming back for a better look. As is, it's worth a try.

Definately to be avoided.
After 45 mins of waiting for our food we were told that they had sold out of our chosen meal and also that 4 of the other selections on the 10 item menu were not available. We then ordered tagliatelle which was tasteless and overpriced.
This pub was absolutely awful.
