user reviews of the Greyhound, Lower Penn

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I very much agree with scocky's review from a few years back, I had some terrible meals in the Greyhound then. However, we popped in last weekend as it is under new management - what a transformation! The whole bar/reastaurant area has been changed, the poncey menu has been replaced by good black country fayre, the fire was lit and the whole place felt warm and welcoming. We didn't sample the food although my partner thought highly of the bitter, and there was a plate of free sandwiches on the bar! We will return again to try the food, however judging by how busy it was in there I think we will need to book. Keep up the good work!

Went to the Greyhound at Lower Penn to treat my girlfriend after having a nice pay rise! Not much of a treat really. This once cosy country pub now wannabe posh restaurant has missed the point. I can live with over the top, tacky decor. I can live with fairly high prices (17 fo a main course, 6 for a starter) but not if the all important food is not cooked well. My partner had pheasant to start with and it was so dry and tasteless we had to ask for some cranberry sauce to make it pallatable. I had the salmon tempura which sounded lovely but was the same as fish and chips from the chippy only without the chips. The medium sirloin steak should have been a safe bet, but no. It was very well done and tough as old boots to boot! When we commented on this to the waitress said she would inform the chef. When we later asked what the chef had said it turns out he had already gone home. Convenient. No offer of a free coffee or a discount. Hapless waitress, we thought but later we discovered, back at home, she was the manageress!
Having posh food prices and fancy folded napkins doesn't make a good restaurant. Go spend your hard earned money somewhere else.

Been in this pub loads of times over the years. Visited again today the cosy homelyness of the place has gone. Thanks to the fairly recent refurbishment and extension it's now more like a posh church hall. Had a pint of Banks's smooth pour MILD but at 2.10 a pint (London prices) I felt ripped off. The same Banks's keg smooth pour MILD costs 1.55 a pint just down the road at the Merryhill where at least their refurbishment is an improvement.
