Fine selection of ales. Either full of character or a bit scruffy depending on your point of view.

Takes a bit of finding if you do not know the area. Head for custom house.

Great place with enthusiastic landlord. Although we couldn't stay long, he was holding a beer fest with meet the brewers evening. There were 9 handpulls so I guess that even on a non beer fest day there would be plenty to choose from. The building is on the slopes leading to the river about 5 minutes walk from the Market Place and about the same distance up steam from the ferry from North Shields.

BTW the information on rail metro etc at top is outdated. Take metro system into South Shields Town Centre, then head toward Market, then simply turn toward MIll Dam past St Hilda's church, & large 24hr Asda Store, past the Riverside pub. Or make bee line for Customs House or Ferry landing and you can't go far wrong (both signposted)

Joe the landlord has tackled the male toilet problems and its regularly got toilet blocks -and as an added help there's a automated sensor on the wall dispensing pongy stuff -but occasionally needs a hand with an extra press of the button ..LOL. In addition, the duke box can download your choice of music from the web (takes a while though), and there's now another flat screen TV at the right of the bar to compliment the large screen at the far end. Never a bad pint served and recently the 3rd time in a row regional CAMRA winner in 2011. Shipbuilding and marine memorabilia everywhere and if your ex navy your ships crest is sure to be there.

Superb pub. Great choice of beers (real ales) and usual lagers. Basic choice of food but this is a drinking place! if you want something to eat go to near by ocean road for a smashing curry.
The staff are always very friendly the pubs visitors always seem to be canny and occasionally very amusing. Excellent jukebox, plenty of interesting and weird stuff to look at on the walls and ceiling (flag collection).9/10.
