user reviews of the Shrewsbury Arms, Dudley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I used to love this place even though it was scruffy, unattractive and occasionally dirty, probably because these three terms apply to me as well. Anyway, finding myself wandering past with half an hour to kill and noticing three pump clips I thought I'd see how it's changed in the past couple of years since last I was in here.

First off, it's been spruced up a bit, with new and clean seat covers. Being an old Banks's house I wasn't surprised to see their mild and bitter on, but at least they were on handpull - why can't other similar pubs do the same? They also had Ringwood Boondogle, which was very nice. Add a jukebox and a handful of locals who felt free to join in any conversation they liked, and you had the ingredients of a very pleasant session.

it won't win any awards, probably won't ever get into the GBG (although I've drunk in worse places that are regulars) and will never attract the real ale circuit regulars, but this is a good old-fashioned backstreet boozer, of the kind we have to use or they'll vanish forever.

I've read it's up for sale. Let's hope that some money is invested in this old boozer. Landlord got a bit snooty as i'm not a local lad.

Came in here, kids running about everywhere on a sunday afternoon. the landlords as old as the pub but pleasant enough. soon all pubs like this will be dead, its not done anything since 1977, the fittings are 1977, the glass 'wash' is 1977, the landlord looks like he died in 1977, and they've not had a fresh keg roll into the cellar since, yep, 1977.

nice enough crowd though

It's like some other pubs in Dudley, in that they open when they feel like it. Last visit here was abysmal. The place has an old fashioned atmosphere (and old fashioned bogs). The bitter was like soap suds. Left half a pint and shot round the corner into the Old Priory for a PROPER pint.

Hoped to get a reasonably priced pint of Holdens MILD in here tonight but it was closed. So went to the nearby Saracens Head and was shocked to have to pay 2.55 for a pint of Hansons MILD, the most expensive MILD in the World.

Is the Shrewsbury Arms always closed on Sundays????
