I very rarely get uncomfortable in pubs, but genuinely didn't like the atmosphere here...

Popped in with some colleagues during the week and it felt like we'd walked into a wedding reception after the uncles had been fighting. The landlord seemed almost annoyed we were there and was mildly threatening, as were a couple of the drinkers inside.

Maybe we caught it on a bad day, but for six o'clock on a Thursday afternoon it just felt oppressive and grim.

Having read other reviews I know understand the miliatary memorabelia on the walls though, which at the time felt a little threatening too.

Havnt been in this pub for years, its had a rough reputation and nothing of interest there. However it seems to have changed hands and is now much better. Its in its beginings but is well worth a pint there. Two real ales on, well Kept 2.50 pint, re-enactment memrobelia on the walls ( photos, uniforms ext) seems its one of the landlords hobbies and many re-enactment groups pop in for a pint. Its being advertised that re-enacters can have their pic on the wall (adds character, great). They do food though limetd, well priced (baked potato bout 3 quid i think). still get a few chaveys in there, and there was a loud mouth guy at the end of the bar one day who wouldnt shut up and leave anyone alone, but its big enough to sit somewhere els.
It takes time for a pub thats been crap for years to be turned round. This one certainly has good begininings and seems to have plans to do lots more.
With all the pubs that are closing now days we need to support the good ones. I drink in a few pubs round rochester when im in town and now this is one of them.

This pub is definately an improvement on what came before you can get 3 bittersw including 2 ales at 2.50 very reasonable prices for rochester pubs I can tell you apart from souless wetherspoons!!
Landlord is friendly and welcoming and there is some basic pub grub on offer no thrills pub but he has some plans for it.
It suffers as its not a pub that stands out in the high street as its laid back a bit and gets passed by.
Its worth a look and as I say cheaper than most around.

A quirky lay out of up and down steps and mix of faux old and ultra modern kind of fox you in to what this place actually is. It does however feel more of a pub than the more vaunted bar over the road. Only one ale on (Hogs Back TEA) which the diligent girl behind the bar drew off a pint of before pulling one for me. It was more drinkable than previous offerings of the day. They have a lower yard for smokers and I noticed a small door with the sign 'children's toilet' above it - not sure if this was for real or some kind of ploy to entice small brats in to a devilish cellar. Can't see this place being to everyone's liking but was okay for me on this visit.
