Quiet village pub, with a modern interior featuring plenty of wood. Only one other customer was present on our visit. Beers are dispensed from a separate cold room. All 3 ales were from Arundel - Castle, Gold & Black Stallion. The latter was very enjoyable.

This free house is in a beautiful village off the beaten track in the South Downs. There are three or four ales, gravity fed and local breweries feature strongly (e.g. Arundel Brewery). Good condition beer, and sensibly priced (£3.10 or so for a session ale).
The main room is open plan, and does posh pub food (which is good quality) at meal times: it definitely gets packed with diners when Goodwood racing is on. Drinkers are welcome, but I imagine feel a bit crowded out when dining is in full swing. There have been a good mix of locals, cyclists and walkers when ever I have visited. There is a lovely garden at the back.
The service is friendly and professional: seems like they know what they are doing. No teenagers or students serving. The atmosphere is smart but not at all poncy unlike other "high end" boozers in Sussex.

We called in at the Star & Garter last Saturday having worked up a good appetite walking the downs. The pub was very busy & we had prepared ourselves to eat in the garden as we had not booked a table. The landlord was very accommodating holding a table for us as another party were just leaving. We tried the local beer, 'Arundal Gold' not really to my taste as I prefer 'Ringwood Best'. The food was really good. I had chicken supreme served with perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. I had no quibble paying 13.50 as this was worth every penny. I know this is a gastro pub but the staff are efficient and friendly. The interior has been tastefully done and has created an old pub feeling, warm & welcoming. My wife reccomends the 'Sticky Figgy Sponge Pudding' positively orgasmic she say's.

Great menu which majors on fish but makes room for some interesting sounding game too. Big seafood platters caught our eye as we sat at the bar enjoying a glass of Ballards drawn from the barrel, as did several ways to enjoy mussels and a game grill featuring venison, pheasant and rabbit. Pub has been blasted back to bleached wood and brick in an appealing manner. Good-looking wine list. Much more a restaurant now than a pub but retaining lots of character

Contemporary conversion of previously shabby pub has breathed new life into village-centre location. Best known for excellent food it has a good selection of Ballards on gravity feed tucked out the back. Nice garden makes it an ideal summer location.
