The Volunteer was very busy on my first visit here on Saturday evening, with many people here to see a live band. Tucked away up a side street from the main road, I hadn't noticed it when walking past to the Fox earlier. But I found it on my way back to town. The music was a bit too loud for my liking (I must be getting old). But the beer range was. Timothy Taylor Landlord, Brass Castle Cliffhanger & Tail Gunner, Saltaire Pride, Leeds Yorkshire Gold, Brown Cow Thriller In Vanilla, Great Newsome Liquorice Lads Stout & Ossett Inception was the ale choice. Thistly Cross Original cider was on keg. Another excellent York pub.

After a couple of pints at the very nice Fox down the road we made a mid-evening stop at this GBG entry back street local.

The friendly but slightly surly looking barmaid waits patiently while I peruse the 8 ales & 1 real cider on the hand pumps. These ales are made up of 5 regulars & 3 guests, I went for a guest which was Maxim’s MXM triple hop @ 4.5% which was okay but not the best ale I’ve had recently.

There was music playing at an acceptable level from either a juke box or from behind the bar. On the walls are photos and pictures of York.

I haven’t got a great deal more to say about the Volunteer Arms as I found it slightly dull, I probably won’t be returning.

A little off the beaten track for visitors to York but well worth a visit.

Seven real ales are available with five regulars and two rotating guests.

Friendly staff and regular live music.

Impressive pub with decent mix of custom supporting food range of local ales, reminds me of Mill Road Cambridge. Saltaire Pride was pretty good. Lots if character and good crisp range.

Visited this pub for first time 11/8/12.

Very impressed. Good beer friendly and knowledgable barstaff.

well worth a visit even though a little bit off the beaten track for real ale enthusiasts.

will certainly be back
