Despite the name has the atmosphere of an Irish pub and sure enough the couple running it hail from the Emerald Isle but they have run this local favourite for decades. Conveniently located opposite the Iron Monger Row Baths, it proved a suitable place for refreshment having used said baths. Reasonable pint of Spitfire. Interesting island shaped bar and refreshing lack of "trendy" people for the area. I think they might have been more imaginative with the decor as it's fairly generic, could do with a few more Britannic bits and bobs if you ask me. Richard_ReadingFC - 26 Mar 2018 16:26 |
Corner pub supported by locals in Clerkenwell/Finsbury. Spitfire was the solitary real ale yesterday. There is a single room with an island bar. Live Six Nations rugby was being shown on the TV. blue_scrumpy - 4 Feb 2018 19:14 |

Stopped off for a late un here a couple of weeks ago(on a friday)- WOW!! this place was really buzzing - 80% of the people in there were bouncing round to the jukey....the tunes weren't great-but I loved the atmosphere-more of the same please! EdgarBriggsMI5 - 25 Oct 2009 11:24 |
I love the Britannia! Friendly, unpretentious, good beer (but not full of real-ale anoraks), used by ordinary people who know how to have fun without having a fight. In short, it is what I would call a 'respectable working class pub' - somewhere I would happily take my old mum and dad for a drink on a Friday night (when they have live music), confident that they would enjoy themselves and feel 'at home'. Given it's location I was really pleasantly surprised to find this pub - with the odd exception most of the pubs in this area are either complete 'dives', trendy yuppie places, or full of city boys. thegoodlead - 9 Oct 2009 12:14 |
