Impressive pub. Was walking the footpaths around the back of Birdlip and there was a lovely sign suggesting that they welcome walkers. Our path doesn't pass the pub, so we continued the walk and then headed up in the car.

Really its a hotel, but it has a fine bar that had three real ales on. I went for the cotwoldlionbrewery best in show beer, which was wonderful.

Will come back in, if passing.

Thursday nights, there's an excellent pub quiz but a little spoilt by a regular team who ring their mates for the answers and so win all the time. Not sour grapes, we saw them doing it in the carpark one time and we never went back again.

This could be a really nice place, with a bit of effort not to be more organised and not so superior. We stayed overnight here and the accommodation was cheap, and fine. We'd eaten in another Greene King pub (the Rising Sun) the night before (same menu) - and had had a very nice meal in a great setting, so we expected the same. But at the George everything was slow - the bar, the restaurant - even the breakfast coffee was hard to get. There were lots of staff but they seemed confused, slow, and stressed out. The one very friendly waiter told us that the Rising Sun was a nice place but this wasn't! He was right. So after a slow and grumpily served drink we had dinner. They messed up the order a bit, and the waiter said "I'll sort something out". But when we looked at the food bill next morning on checking out, they'd just charged the full price. (The right thing would have been to offer a % reduction, or a free bottle of wine - something). When we commented on this, the staff member checking us out treated us to an explanation of why we had no reason to complain. Gosh, imagine how impressed we were by that! So if you want a nice pub with good food, go to the Rising Sun - it's not far away. Sadly we're always good tippers - but not this time. A shame, as anyone can see it's not really the staff's fault, it's the lack of proper team leadership.

Very good food, but service slow. Nice relaxing restaurant and bar area

Another Old English Inn which (like the Rising Sun at Cleeve Hill) is mainly a hotel with restaurant bar attached. Still welcome for Cotswold Way walkers with a choice of ales including local Goffs
