Spacious pub, pretty good service for this part of town and reasonable quality beer. Fairly pricy even for the area. I'd put it as the best of the pubs actually on Whitehall ahead of the Silver Cross, Clarence and Spoons (though that serves a purpose and is much cheaper which is worth noting).

Better options close by though if you are a real ale fan - the Harp and Ship and Shovell, but it's perfectly serviceable. Has satellite TV sport as well if that's a factor for you.

This used to be my regular in the Whitehall area, but not any more. There were 6 real ales on tap, but of the three I tried one was rank and had to be sent back. The other two (Finchcocks and Adnams Explorer) were warm and had a nasty aftertaste. I was charged £8.60 for a pint of each, which is pretty appalling even for central London prices. The barman changed the rank pint without complaint, but shrugged his shoulders and said it was too warm, as if you can never sell a decent pint of ale when the temperatures over 70F. The music was also too loud. I won't be coming back here until they sort out their real ale.

A couple of Adnams beers, Westerham Bulldog and God's Wallop. The Bulldog was very good!
As always the pub was clean and tidy and the staff were efficient. As it was busy they couldn't chat too much but were friendly enough whenever things were quieter.
I don't use the pub as much as I used to as I rarely travel via Charing X but I enjoy popping in whenever I'm in the area.

How is £3.90 expensive for a pint in London? Maybe if the only other pubs you go to are Spoons.

Adnams Explorer at £3.90 was expensive. The food was ok, small portions and took an age to serve. Not too many people in here, could be the "please wait to be seated" sign puts people off. The interior is nice. Not a pub to frequent.
