Now a private property, still called Chequers.

Sad to see this pub go but the owners messed around with trying to sell it like it was part of the royal household and not just a pleasant village pub and eatery. i liked the place but the locals talked it up like it was a klondyke, run away success story which it obviously wasn't or it wouldn't have been sold. Nevertheless, a great old pub and a shame the food was good, great business on weekends esp. Sunday lunch and the ale was top notch mostly. A pleasant way to run out a dead & rainy Sunday or quality place when the sun shines.

Heard this pub is closing this week. Say it isn't so?

Arrived here at 2.05pm today after a 5 mile hike with the dog, we were starving, we were advised by another customer that the kitchen closed at 2.00pm. After enquiring at the bar they said the kitchen was indeed closed but they could cook scampi and chips if that was ok and we gratefully accepted. The food was very well presented and large portions. Staff were very friendly and helpful, would recommend this to our friends.

This is at throughly nice village pub. It's comfortable; it's got a good selection of decent beer (Maldon Gold, Pride, something called Red Hop Lover and a couple of others the other night, plus draught cider); the food looks OK and it wasn't overly crowded.

What's not to like? The only problem I have is that it's a drive...
