Popped in a for a quick beer the other night. As it was a Saturday, I expected the place to be...well, not empty anyway. First thing you see is a rather lonely looking stingray in a tank, which was the liveliest thing in the place. Ale was alright, though.................

All said and done, the Metcalfe is under new management and they are working very hard, of late the food menu has changed, excellent fresh and interesting food, well served with a great atmosphere. Friends and I go too frequently and eat regularly it's great and we are not easy to please! THE DECANTER if you are in Bury is superb, especially if you like a wine bar that does quality food to suit all including vegetarians. I live in Hawstead so wish to see the pub survive, if they keep up the good work they will. Discreet castle for the children, monthly quiz night and authentic curry night (chefs from Halstead Indian). Great ale and good wines all at fair prices. I sound biased I know, but praise where.......

Had high hopes for this place, as my wife and I had a great meal there a couple of years back under previous owners. Sadly my hopes were misplaced. It's in a nice enough place and the owner was ok, if a bit brusque with us, BUT the food was terrible! My wife had a badly undercooked chicken dish, whilse I being a vegetarian found little choice and had to settle for a couple of soggy veg side dishes. Avoid at all costs!

Recently had lunch there, the best food I had in ages.
Small menu suggests everything is freshly cooked, and the long wait proved right. But it was worth the wait!
The Pub puts on lots of activities to attract business, check it out!
Nice modern decor, but hasn't lost the pub feelinEspecially good for meat and fish lovers.

Reopened in April 2009 with a micro brewery, it had been my local for several years prior to 2005. Small menu all freshly cooked but lacking in choice for vegetarians. On the day of my visit both hand pumps in use for Adnams bitter and their own brew. Both were pulled with excessive amounts of froth and were cloudy, bottom of the barrel? They did not see it as a problem, it will be for them if it puts customers off! I am back to the Old Cannon
