We went to the George and Dragon at Wentworth for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed it although we had to wait for an hour we put this down to it being quite busy.
On the strength of this I booked for the Hoober room, which the chap I spoke to clearly described as a restaurant, for a special evening to celebrate my husbands birthday. There were 11 in our party.
Overall the food is good, the pub itself is a lovely “proper” pub and the selection of well kept real ales is smashing.
However where the establishment falls down significantly is in terms of customer service.
On arrival I let the staff know we were there, there was no sense of welcome and we were told that we would have to order at the bar before proceeding to the restaurant, this caused a bit of chaos especially as there was nowhere to sit down. There were a number of empty tables however these bore the legend “reserved for food only until 9pm” so we weren’t allowed to use them.
After quite a bit of messing about where we felt in the way, we managed to order. The young man behind the bar didn’t write anything down, despite being asked to, and there were one or two errors with the order.
I had paid a deposit the day before and I think we do look like the steady bunch of middle class types we are, however I clearly heard a woman behind the bar say to the young man, in a Shakespearean whisper, “tell them we can’t serve them until they’ve given us a card to swipe”. Not a practise I’ve come across in restaurants before.
I had asked if I could bring a cake, this was agreed. I needed to put the candles on, I had a discussion with the woman behind the bar about where I could do this and she was most unhelpful. I ended up having to do it in the car boot in the snowy car park.
The service during the meal was none existent apart from the food being brought in. It was spasmodic and slow and there were errors in people’s orders.
Overall I felt as if I had let my husband and friends down in bringing them to such a place. They all felt that the food and drink were good but that the organisation and the customer service were very poor. The staff weren’t all specifically rude however it felt like they thought they were doing us a favour in letting us eat in their establishment. There was no sense of being welcomed or valued at all.
This is a shame as it could be really great here.
Well , I know 11 people and possibly their friends and acquaintances who are unlikely to darken their door again.

Firstly Lime Juice, it's the Barnsley Brewery at Elsecar, not the Wentworth Brewery, which is indeed located in Wentworth. Secondly,
I have always found the staff to be pleasant, courteous and attentive .
Thirdly, the selection of beers, although dominated by the Wentworth Brewery of Wentworth, is often complemented by a microbrew from further afield and are invariably excellently kept.

The cheap remark about it only being popular because it's in a tourist hot-spot is sooo wide of the mark and churlish.

God forbid that this little gem of a country pub in the Rotherham borough should ever close its doors as there are few enough quality real ale pubs in the area as it is. I'll give it 9!!

Went today (Monday) and ordered a sanwich and a salad at 13.00. An hour later and the food arrived, and this hour-long wait has been the norm on my previous 2 visits which took place in March and summer last year. This place is as busy as it is solely due to its location in a tourist hot-spot - would have been closed down long ago if it was elsewhere. (and FYI the Wentworth beer is brewed in Elsecar)

The food has been good in the past but seems to be going downhill.. last few times it has been disapointing.. i think they have changed chefs.... The staff REALLY need a course in customer service...... i ordered chicken and bacon carbonora and it was very dry with barely any meat at all. As we had paid nearly £10 for this i did not think it was too much to ask for a bit more sauce but the chef said there was none left...i asked for my money back as i said i could not eat it so dry... i was told by a sniggering bar lad that the chef said he was not prepared to give me my money back.. i felt really upset as we had waited nearly an hour for the meal to come and i did not want to order anyting else and have to wait again as everyone else was eating their meal.... all of a sudden a waitess appeared with what all i can desribe as is a jug of warm milk with a few herbs thrown in. My pasta had gone cold and it was overcooked anyway,, i tried but i just could not eat it. I asked to speak to the manager only to be told she was not prepared to speak to me because as far as she wasconcerned the issue had been resolved and she was off to take a shower. She did not even have the decency to come and see me face to face, i did not want to make a scene so we left feeling really usset at how the staff had treatedas after all we have spent over the years, i have never complained before. We have eaten here loads of times before and recommended it to other people.
The week before we took our family in who were over form Australia and spent over £300. Sad thing is because of the service we will never go back and i will never recommend the place to anyone again.

a lovely old english country village pub on the main road through wentworth.
it is set back from the main road, with its own small car park. a few stone steps lead up to a small slabbed patio providing a handful tables with outdoor seating. I didn't see the beer garden but its said to be nice.
***
inside theres a small seating area near the bar as you enter, along with two other rooms either side, mainly for dining. The place has a nice original old fashioned feel to it, and smells appetizingly of food. I found there was also some stairs leading to an extra dining room upstairs.
**
the george is a "free house" and I noticed there are 6 cask ales on, a selection of both local and national. I called sunday lunch time and whilst trade was brisk, the staff were still friendly and keen to serve.
***
verdict:
I was very pleased all round with my visit, and I like this kind of pub.
I would be happy to call again here off-peak to try the meals.
an 8 from me.
