user reviews of the Stables, St Andrews

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place was legendary amoungst St Andrews students for being a complete dive frequented by psycopathic locals. I was told this is because at one stage The Stables was the only pub in town with a late licence and therefore was the scene of many a bust up between the locals and the students. This was some time ago and the main bust ups now occur at the all night garage after the pubs shut.

The lack of windows and the fact it is so far out of town meant most students never go in The Stables. However, I was living up on Lamond Drive for a while and we used to go in there the whole time becuase we wanted a place close to get hammered.

First thing is that since its a small place with a close knit bunch of regulars they are all incredibly friendly. Some of them, usually the lonely old guys, will buy you and your mates a round if you will sit there and listen to their entire life story. Secondly if you go in there and use the pool table a small kid will sometimes come up to you and ask if you want a game. Don't bother. The little bastard is bloody good and will take a sadistic pleasure in humiliating you over and over again. Thridly, for some bizzare reason the pool area has shelf after shelf of romatic fiction in it. I have no idea why this is the case. Lastly, there is some crazy woman with torrettes syndrome in there who screams obscenities at random intervals, other than that she is quite harmless. Plus its been some time since I went in there and she has probably drunk herself to death by now.

have been in there a few times and had a great time everyone very friendly. It is a locals pub but they make visitors very welcome. Nevere known anyone to get a pasting.

I'm a regular visitor to The Stables and I'm a student...from England! Have yet to receive 'a pasting' - very disappointing!

are holding my mother and father in laws golden wedding celaebrations there concerned

Unless you and all your ancestors have grown up within half a mile of this place then DO NOT GO IN. Quite simply, it is not safe - you will get a pasting. That's just the way it is. It's not exactly in the town so you'd have to go looking for it if you wanted to drink there - I would strongly counsel against this. You have been warned!
