Mrs Anonymous back again. Well I've been back to the Old Thistle now that it is under new management (in fact more than once) and can heartily recommend the food, the beer, the service and the ambience. Huge congratulations to the new owners - they've done a fabulous job reviving the place and its great to see that the menu is changing slightly between visits. How wonderful to find great local produce back on the menu - the Aberdeen Angus steaks are to die for, the rabbit cassolet is delicious and the lamb shank will hopefully stay as a standard (I can't recommend that highly enough). It's also lovely to see a good volume of customers coming through the doors. Keep up the good work - I'm looking forward to many more visits.

Our meal...
Further to my earlier posting, I have just returned home from the Thistle with my wife and her father and mother, who are visiting from England.
To quote my father in law "The lamb shank, done in a red sauce, knocks spots off the lamb shank we had in Wales last year"! Mother in law was more than satisfied with the Chicken, stuffed with haggis and served in a whiskey sauce.
My wife for her part agreed in full that the meal (she had the same as her Mum), was extremley, good value and really tasty.
For my part I was very pleased with the standard of service, the quality, quantity, and warmth of the welcome that was given not only to my party but to other members of the public that were dining.
As the new owners build their business, I can percieve The Old Thistle Inn being a venue that will have to be booked well in advance for food.
Thankfully I will still be able to have an enjoyable pint in the bar. See you there sometime.

Having lived locally now for 2.5 years I had visited this pub on no more than 9 occasions, during this time and had never felt at home. Until the new owners took over some weeks ago.
I have visited more than 20 times since and every time have been made to feel welcome and warm on cold days, and welcome & cool on hot days.
The beer is good and I have heard so many good comments from other local folk about the new owners cooking that I have booked a table for 4 this evening for a meal.
I will be reporting back but certainly still regard this as my local and will support the new owners, whole heartilly. PS it is worth mentioning that they sell a nice ginger beer for those that have to drive...

The Old Thistle Inn, is now under new ownership, the menu has been changed and is excellent, all freshly prepared by the French chef (who I have been reliably informed does not buy his steak from costco)all the ingredients are local, I had an excellent meal there on good Friday and would thoroughly recommend it to all.

This pub makes me so cross. It could be absolutely amazing. Its a lovely building outside, the staff are friendly, the beers are kept beautifully and the tiny snug bar is a great room but the place really misses out on the wow factor.

The decor, specially in the dining rooms is really tired specially the upholstery. If you're on you own in the dining room its always really chilly and has no atmosphere. The pool room/ sometimes dining room has office-type chairs which is bizarre. The menu rarely changes and seems to concentrate on far eastern or south american food which seems odd in a real Borders village. Also, why when we have such amazing local produce in these parts do they rarely have it on the menu - sea bass (generally farmed in Greece) is a big feature and I was told (by a member of staff) that the beef all comes from CostCoand really misses out on top quality flavour. Having said that, the steaks are always beautifully tender and cooked to perfection.

As I said, it could be so good...
