This pub has improved since my last review in March 2010. There has been a new manager & lots of new bar staff. There is an ongoing problem with the cask bitter, it is served with a good head on it but within 5 minutes it is as flat as a fluke, resembling cold tea. This has been mentioned to the bar staff but as only one or two of them actually drink real ale comments fall on stoney ground.

Last night, Wednesday 23rd October was a normal night in the pub until I went to the bar to order my last drink at 11.55pm. This pub shuts at midnight so I was well within the advertised hours. I asked for a pint of bitter only to be told that the pub was closed. I asked to speak to Rory the duty manager, I informed him that there had been no bell at ''last orders or ''time''. He just stated that ''We are closed''. I asked him why he hadn't informed the customers in the pub as to why they were closing early. He replied ''Show me where it says that I have to inform you that we are closing early?''. I said to him ''That is disgraceful'' & walked away. As I was leaving the pub, I said to one of the bar staff (female), ''Please tell Rory that I will be reporting this to head office tomorrow''.

Can't see many recent comments. Staff are fine despite comments - I don't eat there so won't comment on that one.

Latest info - discounts for CAMRA members no longer available as of today. The manager is 'using his discretion' not to take them other than the 50p off vouchers.

It never was much, but if he's using his discretion not to welcome there, I'll use mine not to buy that extra pint.

His choice.

I went to this pub recently on a mid week evening when it was quietish. I was looking forward to a pint of cask bitter & I was expecting a good choice. To my 'bitter' disappointment out of 12 hand pumps, 6 had signs on stating '' ??? bitter - coming soon'', 3 had the signs turned away from the customer because the barrel was empty, leaving only 3 bitters on sale. There was a choice of Abbott Ale & 2 straw coloured bitters which are not really to my taste.

There is absloutely no atmosphere in this pub, it just isn't like a proper pub. The staff were a mixed bunch, 2 friendly, 1 ok & 1 miserable person with no sense of humour whatsoever.

I won't be rushing back to the Robert Shaw.

It has improved a lot recently. Good beer at a fair price and the new staff are a big improvement on the old lot.
