The Stag was our second pub of the day on a Saturday Lincolnshire crawl, after the Ancaster Social Club. It's an Everards pub serving Tiger, Sunchaser & Beacon. They also had a guest from Castle Rock - Crafty Flanker. Whilst it seemed primarily a foodie-type pub, there were a couple of drinkers. There is a dining area on one side and a lounge (where food is also served) on the other. Some of the seating is on old church pews. Has a nice village location.

The Stag is certainly worth more than its present 5.9 rating. In my book it deserves to be much nearer 8/10. It is in delightful position on one the side of Barkston's unspoilt village green and I have no complaints about the beer. My two pints of Everard's Tiger were excellent,. They also had Beacon and a guest ale from the Bath Brewery on the handpumps. The staff were friendly and efficient and everywhere, including the toilets, were spotlessly clean. We did not eat here so I cannot comment about the food.

It is the nearest pub to Belton House and was the ideal place to relax with a quiet drink before meeting our daughter-in-law and our two lively grandsons for a frenetic afternoon on Belton's brilliant adventure playground ...

Decent Everards Tiger and Beacon on sale. Food was OK. Service good. Staff friendly.

On the basis of a first visit I reckon a rating of 5.9/10 is more than a touch generous. I would go along with the comments about a nice pint of Tiger but overall is was something of a disappointment. It's a fine looking building on a prime site in a smashing village: it looks like one of those pubs the British Tourist Authority promotes to foreign visitors and I thought we would be in for a treat. But inside it's the opposite of the Tardis: little bar and cramped dining room. Prompt service from a cheery and efficient barmaid/waitress could not detract from the fact that the place needs to be cleaned and redecorated and the carpet looks like it is nearing the end of its useful like. Food was OK-ish but nothing special and not cheap by the standards of other places around here. Would I go back? Well, if I found myself in Barkston waiting for a bus and it came on to rain - Yes. Otherwise - you can guess!
