The Hawthorn is a roadside establishment that has a reputation for good food. In fact, it is now more of a restaurant than a pub with all tables laid out for diners. Nevertheless, they did have Westgate Fireside which was pleasant. Better than I had expected and they don't mind people going in just for a drink.

The facts: We telephoned the Hawthorn with regard to making a booking for New Years Eve. It was explained that there was a set menu and also the usual menu avaliable. We decided to book the table and requested the table in the corner alcove near the window. All confirmed and we were now ready and waiting for New Years Eve.

New Years Eve arrives and we attend the Hawthorn at just befor 8PM (our booking was for 8PM). Upon arrival we 'checked in'. First the table we requested was not avaliable, we were semi ok with that, but got seated in a non desirable seat. We sat down to look at the menu, the set menu was only in sight. The waiter came accross so we asked for the usual menu, "ah" said the waiter, "not serving from that menu".

Two major mistakes were made so we left the Hawthorn, disgruntled and never to return. Make up your own mind folks!

I can't agree with moo about expense. The Hawthorn is one of my favourites BECAUSE it is good food (and meets with Continental standards) and the price is very much mid range.
Of course, it might appear expensive to burger eaters but THAT is not FOOD is it?

Very expensive and a no smoking policy means its a pain for smokers to have a few jars.
TT week has good atmosphere here though

The pub section here is a long and narrow pub bar with eating accommodation either side. The food is great and the beer (and wine) selection good and, whilst motor bikers often find it too restauranty, I don't go with them on this issue. One can go for a nice pint but must wait at main meal times. I personally prefer to go for both.
