user reviews of Gold Balance, Kirkby

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My first ever visit to Kirkby. I wasn't too impressed. But at least this Wetherspoons was doing a good trade on a Sunday morning. There were plenty enjoying breakfasts. It's in the main shopping area and not far from the bus station. It feels quite light and airy, especially compared to the Raven in Walton where I had been previously. Ales were Banks's Barley Brown's Tumble Off Pale Ale, Peerless Chill Factor & Moorhouses Blonde Witch. Unusually for a 'spoons, there were only the 4 handpulls. The 4th was unused. I opted for the mulled cider, as it was a cold morning. Service was friendly.

Don't ask me how I ended up in this pub let alone in Kirkby but I did and it is a good walk from the station (I took the bus back). Anyway, this is a standard Wetherspoons bar - probably a conversion of a shop. usual format and offers and has been said caters for a lot of the more elderly residents who appear to be there from the minute the place opens! It does of course offer the very good value breakfast deal and the coffee is cheap so there is an attraction! However, as with so many 'spoons they did not have enough bar staff - in fact just one girl who coped admirably under the circumstances. I got my drink and sat down to listen to the local banter before heading back into Liverpool They did have a couple of guest ales (Peerless) and a CAMRA Corner which had all the local beer news etc!. I have been in worse Wetherspoons!

This pub is ok when it comes to meeting your mates before you head off somewhere else. Quality food is served daily and you can even get a decent pint of Budweiser. The toilets are a pain being up a flight of stairs, but if you get lost, there are arrows pointing the way. They have recently had TV screens fitted which is an excellent idea, but the only thing is they don't have sky sports 1,2,3. Also the bar staff are friendly. Strangly enough, it's busier in the day than at night.

Without wishing to offend the residents of Kirkby too much, this place opened in 1999 in the town centre of a pretty rough town in the suburbs of Liverpool. Thus, it is often packed full of the same regulars who consist of old men in their 50s/60s who park themselves inside all day drinking guiness and travel back and forth the bookmakers!
Being Wetherspoons, food is cheap and good, large selection of real ales available and bar staff are friendly guys. However the toilets are located at the top of a massive flight of stairs to the rear of the pub - not good if your old, disabled or drunk
